Күн бұрын

We had many questions and a few concerns prior to RVing California...especially in the summer. We asked you on Fbook what questions you had to create our RVing California Coast Q&A!
Here are the 7 questions we answer in this video.
1. How did we decide where to visit?
2. What places did you want to visit, but didn't?
3. How did "no reservations" work in California?
4. What was our favorite Harvest Host?
5. What expensive is it?
6. How was driving an RV on the PCH & 101?
7. When is the best time to visit?

As a California native, born and raised in San Francisco, and spending many summers tent-camping with my parents, I must say, you've done a bang-up job of outlining the pros and cons by season and destinations. I would add, however, that it does snow in the mountains, and depending on the weather of a given year, there may still be snow and chain requirements as late as May. The coast is gorgeous, but don't miss the inland central valley, either--but in mid summer, be prepared for temperatures that can reach triple-digits sometimes for a week at a time. State capitol of Sacramento lies within, and the super fun Old Town Sac makes for a fun day or two. It it's redwoods you want to see, you're probably going to be safer and mentally more comfortable on the Redwood Highway, (101) than on the coast road. Muir Woods in Marin County is splendid, and tour busses do go there, but I sure wouldn't want to be driving anything much bigger than my PT Cruiser on that road; it's nail-biting in places! Thanks again for your awesome, informative videos.

Best time to visit the North Coast of California is September and October. Usually the summer fog and winds are gone by then so the temperatures are the warmest and once the kids are back in school areas are less crowded.

Marc and Tricia ~ I wanted to begin by saying that I am so grateful for stumbling onto your channel so many months ago. I knew right away that I had found something very special. I knew that I was going to be hooked right away (maybe binge watching all of season one in two days had something to do with that). I also wanted to thank you. Thank you for not only being entirely entertaining but also for being an inspiration. Some of my favorite childhood memories involved camping/ rv-ing and I want my children to have those same amazing experiences. You both are always so positive, honest, and genuine that it really reminds you just how important it is to cherish every single moment you have with your family. I remember a long time ago when you said "you only get 18 summers with your kids." That really spoke volumes. I also was able to get my wife hooked because of your Maine episode. One of our favorite places on earth is Camden so if you ever go back I highly recommend it. Now she wants an RV too! Sorry for being so long winded but I just really wanted to thank you for bringing us along on all of your adventures. It is an honor to tag along with you on your journey and we look forward to many more years to come! Safe travels!

Next time you are in Paso Robles "Ro-bulls", as the locals say.... check out the history. We are not just wine. So much to explore on the central coast. Happy you were able to enjoy what you were able to. This area has been my playground all my life.

The toughest drive on route 1 in my opinion is between Leggett and California coast. There are may sharp turns and absolutely no shoulder. You have to use opposite lane to make turns. However you are not alone. Often you see a logging truck doing the same thing in opposite direction. So go slow and peak around turns best you can. We drove it with a 32 foot 5th wheel. I didn't think it was difficult. Later at a gas station in Ft. Bragg, I chatted with a professional truck driver who was pulling a 37 foot 5th wheel behind a GMC. He said that the above mentioned part of the road was the most stressful time he had driving. I didn't think it a big deal myself.

Hi Marc and Trish! Hope you have your free Parks Canada pass to celebrate Canada's 150th! Recommendations: Revelstoke BC -Taco Truck, Giant cedars boardwalk, upload pics at any National park that has the "red chairs" (its a tradition), Banff hot springs, johnson canyon hike (check to see that it is open - there was a fisheries problem in the area last year - albertans are passionate fisher folk!), icefields parkway (yes, take the ice coach onto the Athabaska Glacier before its too late!), Jasper if you have time, Kananaskis region just west of Calgary, Waterton Pk in southern Alberta backing onto Glacier Park in Montana (must do sun to sky road tour - w/o Ginger!!! 😱. Much more around every corner! Enjoy!

I love my state. Yes, the reason it is so expensive is supply and demand. Best time to visit - when you did and September and October if you like it even hotter than May/ June. The weather is good, a bit milder than July and August, and the crowds are down, because of school. Avoid San Diego in the weeks around Comic Con (late July), you'll know because even junk places are asking gold plated prices. Travel safely.

Trichia and Mark..Great videos. The wife and I are relatively (2 months) new in the RV community. We bought a Jayco 195RB because it's just the two of us. (yep, a sprinter).. So far, we've been doing mainly local weekend jaunts. We live in San Diego and of course, are aware of the many costs. Like you said in the video, timing is everything. Since there isn't really an "off season" here, a little planning to miss the summer break period helps, the traffic can be cruel. Anyway, love the videos and advice, keep them coming. Best of enjoyment in your travels. Tom and Nancy

Love your Q&A. Newbee's have questions and rightly so. As to the person who was afraid of driving some roads; we had a 41' coach, pulled a 24' tri-axle trailer with a 5' tongue. So added up was 70'. We drove all over the US and parts of Canada with no RV park reservations and never had a problem on any road that we were on and most of the time, never had to unhook from the trailer to RV park.

We just did a family RV trip from Socal to Norcal. We stayed at a Harvest Host at Tobin James winery and that was great. As we worked our way up north we stayed at a campground in Marina just north of Monterey and getting a trailer into the site was really difficult. One of the best parks we stayed at on the way back was The RV Ranch in Paso Robles. Really clean and $55.00 a night. In that area I would highly recommend the Wine Country RV Park too. It's a little pricey but very nice.

You can do Disney on the cheap(er) by staying at a RV park that is not that far away, and they even have a shuttle to and from the park. Also, if you go in October it is not as crowded, but still pretty busy. During that time they also have Mickey’s Halloween parties on select evenings. You pay extra for it, but they limit the amount of people. All the attractions are open, they have candy stations you can trick or treat at, and it is fun for all ages. My wife and I have gone down twice for it, but stayed in hotels both times (no trailer yet), and really enjoy it. Enjoy the videos, and keep us the good work.

Thank you for a great recap. I learned a lot from it. Your RVing insight is second to none. I have spent a good bit of time in CA, but mostly back in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, in a semi-tractor trailer. California is an amazingly beautiful and diverse state, with SO much to offer. The beauty and climate are spectacular. The Alabama Hills are calling out to me. California Dreaming

Awesome. We stay at Carpinteria it's one of our fave spots for dry camping and this is an awesome FYI for ya: the campground ranger told me once that way they measure the rig that is going to be right on the water is from the tongue to the back of the rear wheels. They said they don't include any of the "overhang" of the RV past the back wheel in their requirements. So there's a new tip. Ask the parks what is it exactly they include in the feet length measurements. Love your videos! This is a huge week for us since we are about to start our permanent move out of our 3bedroom house into our 29ft camper with our 3 young sons full-time RV-ing next week!!! We are beginning our full time journey with a year+ in Baja!! Keep the vids coming they have been so exciting for our fam! Xoxo julie & ryan

Just want to point out how locals pronounce things. In LA, the port of San Pedro sounds like San Peedro, nothing like the correct one, San Paydrow. And if you are in SLO, (nobody says San Luis Obispo) the main street (Higuera) is High gerra, even though in Spanish it's E Guerra. You pronounce Paso Robles correctly, "Paso Robe less" but nobody in Santa Barbara county does. It's Paso Robbels. PS, love you videos!

Love the vids and the teachable moments. Wish I could do the same with my family for such extended trips. I am wondering if the high rates are mainly in the SoCal area. Look into the Sonoma area (Bodega Bay, etc.) for some fantastic locations. for example the rates at Doran Regional Park is much cheaper at around 32 to 35 a night and there are tons of things to do and see. Keep up the cool stuff.

I live in CA (Silicon Valley) so I have a jaded view of CA. Everything is so expensive here -- just this past Wednesday, a new 12 cent sales tax on gasoline just went into effect, as if we weren't already taxed like crazy on gas prices. I love travelling to other states. In fact, I have been doing an annual fall trip where I go out of state for the entire month of OCT to chase fall colors. This year I spent a lot of time in NM and went to see the Balloon Fiesta. I was in AZ for a bit too. I will say that much of CA has pretty good year round weather, so it's true you can visit all year round. I personally wouldn't recommend the summer months as it's crazy busy here. Anyway, I got sidetracked. Just wanted to chime in here and say hello. Wish you guys safe travels and keep the positive vibe videos coming!

I think this is a great idea as long as not too boring for you two. But this could be really helpful for people that are looking for those same states you do them on. Cali is pricey, for sure. But man....what views.

Nice video. Great ideas. Here’s one: a google map with your route and where you stayed and things you did (you know, with all that down time you don’t have). Wishing you the best in your travels.

I'm loving season 3. Well I've loved them all so far :-) I went to Disney Land once, took the entire family down the end of May, just before school got out. The line wait was only 10-15 minutes. I had an employee go down 3 weeks after us and the line wait was 2+ hours. Loved going back over your trip and such great questions and answers. So much to see heading to Banf. Harper is gorgeous. Kimberly is like a little Bavarian village. Radium hot springs.is cool. And something I thought was really cool was Fort Steel. Prince of Whales is a must see. As always enjoy!
