I remember watching a live concert of music from NieR. There was a giant screen with footage from the game, and there were all the musicians and the singers, and Emi Evans of course. And then there was that funny little guy, the conferencier. Hosting the show, saying a couple words about each song. A short chubby guy, very charming, but very unobtrusive. Very softspoken and humble. Subservient, even. Kept bowing and thanking the audience all the time. And it was never a simple arigatou. It was always a full-fledged "hontou ni arigatou gozaimashita", you know. Every single time. With a bow. I bought the CD collection. Sometimes at night I would sit at the piano and play Shadowlord by ear. Grandma. Kainé. Emil. Snow in Summer. Occasionally I would arrange them for two violins to play in duet with my violin teacher. Then NieR:Automata came out and I bought a PS4 just to play it. Just the one game. I paid almost 400 Euro to play just one game. I wish I had paid more. The game that broke my heart and crushed my soul. And then and only then, after all that, months later even, one fine day it finally occurred to me to google the composer's name. As in, I knew what the name was. I long knew it by heart, needless to say. But I had never actually looked him up. What else he had worked on, where he was from, what he looked like. So I googled "Keiichi Okabe". And my jaw dropped. Smiling at me from the screen was that funny little guy. That humble conferencier who at the concert had acted like a complete nobody and kept apologizing to the audience for wasting their time with his presence. It had been him all along. The composer himself. What understatement. What a gentleman. What a mensch. I am at a loss for words even still now. Mr Okabe, I know you will never read this, but I love you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for everything. 本当にありがとうございました indeed.

Key ingredient: Platinum games and Square Enix money. Drakengard through Nier:Gestaltlicant were not masterpieces. It took all the back-end skill at Platinum and the financial clout of SE to truly weaponize Taro/Okabetism.

Even to this day i still believe videogames music is heavily underrated but more than anything Japanese composers, they've been killing it through the years yet it feels like they don't get the appreciation they truly deserve. I think what makes the Toco toco series captivating is not only the people being interview in it, but also the subtle and non-intrusive editing.

@Bara Tulska That's classic Yoko Taro bait and switch. He hooks you with something and stabs you in the heart with another. Drakengard: Classic fantasy with badass and heroic dragon riders that fight for justice ? Nope ! Meet a bunch of psychopatic murderers as they mow their ennemies with glee using justice as a pretense. NieR: A dad/brother goes on a quest to save his sickly daughter/sister while teaming up with a skimpy lady in revealing underwear ? Nope ! Meet a desperate dad going through madness as he goes on a quest that will ultimately destroy the human race while teaming up with a hermaphrodite girl that wears sexy underwear as clothes to show that she accepts her body as it is. Automata: An android with a sexy body and her cute sidekick will save the human race from extinction by defeating the evil aliens ? Nope ! Turns out the aliens are dead. The humans are dead. So you follow androids on a tragic quest for purpose in life. One finds love. One finds hate. One finds redemption. All the while teaching you through sidequests that letting other people or abstract concepts dictate what your purpose in life is will only lead to your own destruction as an individual. EDIT: I nearly didn't buy NieR:Automata because of the sexualisation. I was anti-baited. This would have been one of the biggest mistakes of my life as this game changed me.

This was very informative, thank you ! The fact that the Automata OST was only composed of layers that needed to be re-assembled in order to make real tracks for the CD release speaks a lot of those people's dedication to making video game music, and not music that happens to be in a video game. It reminds me of what Mick Gordon did with the DOOM (2016) soundtrack. That's why listening to those tracks without playing the game feels weird to me. They are good on their own, but its truly how they are used in the medium they were created for that elevates them to greatness.

Keiichi Okabe, if there's the slightest chance of you or someone from Monaca or even Emi Evans reading this, know that I dream, every single day, of having the privilege to work alongside you and your crew for creating masterful compositions for my stories. Keep up doing what you do best, because somewhere in the opposite side of the globe, there's someone who roots and thinks dearly of your work. NieR:Automata has the best videogame soundtrack I've listened in my entire life. I can't thank you enough for this. (I even figure you and Ryuichi Sakamoto working together [with me, who knows], since I also know you're a huge fan of him, as much as I am hahahahaha)

This was a truly fascinating and touching interview (or monologue). One thing that hit me is that during this whole 38 minutes Keiichi Okabe did not mention that he actually loves/likes what he is currently doing or that he is proud/happy of the reception that his music got. Thinking how beautiful his music is to me, it makes me a bit sad that the creator himself doesn't share the same feeling for his own creations.

I'm sad that toco toco ends with this episode. It was an amazing series and you produced one of the best interviews/biopics on youtube. When I look back it's crazy how much the series devoloped and changed over time. From the quirky and more humorous first episodes to the deep and philosophical cinematic experiences they have become. I'm sure whatever comes next will be great! Maybe you will even reveal who you all are? But until then, keep up the good work and thank you for all the thoughtful and entertaining moments I was allowed to experience with your videos.
