That 7-8 micrometer in the box with all the paperwork seems like an incredible steal. Love seeing old tools that have been taken care of. Congrats to Hannah!

Congrats to the master Hanna! A left hand helix with a right hand cut tends to push the cutter towards the arbor and against the spindle and provides a more rigid setup, I think this is common for cutting tough grades of stainless and some materials like inconel and titanium. It also deflects the cutter towards the work and makes it take a slightly deeper cut than intended vs a standard right hand helix and direction of cut that tends to push away and take a slightly shallow depth of cut than intended. I think if you use the cutter you will find if you do a reverse cut after making a pass it won't make a spring cut like a standard end mill will.

Hello Keith, It's always a pleasure to so your Odds & Ends and first of all congratulations for you and your daughter Hannah for her shooting. Nice to see how proud you are of your daughter and see an very happy daddy. Besides, about metric, I used to it here in Europe but the strange thing is that measurement for monitors and tv's are always in inch. Mostly I don't know the diagonal from a tv or monitor in centimeters but only know the size of it in inch. Same with the size of car tires here in Europe who are always in inch. Anyway thanx for the nice Odd & Ends and many greetings from Roel out of the Netherlands, a very windy Netherlands with storms and heavy weather .

Well, yes it is Little Bird. Her shooting went from 8 inch paper to 1 inch plastic army men. What fun. Oh, and she was 4 years old. :) enjoy dad!!

Those Starrett pocket charts also have listed the drill sizes for taps (fractional, metric and pipe taps at 75% depth of cut) and decimal conversions of fractional/letter/number drills. Pretty darn handy charts which you can readily and inexpensively find on eBay.

I also had an R8 end mill holder (1/2") that would not accept double ended cutters. Apparently many imports are like that. A few weeks ago I came across another 1/2" holder at an estate sale that did accept them- I'm now glad I didn't sell off my 1/2" mills!

Dear Keith, thanks for uploading your videos. I find all of them very interesting as I am into vintage machines and engines. You are also an inspiration to me along with Mrpete222,Keith fenner, doubleboost, and many others. I am messaging from my hospital bed In Germany, I return to UK next week. Please congratulate your daughter on her achievements at the weekend. Do you ever come across the old hotbulb engines in the US? I happen to like these but seem to be quite rare here! I will introduce myself properly at a later date. Keep up the restorations. I wish I could go back in time to 1920,s. Keep restoring those beautiful machines. Manny

***** Hi Keith, its Hot bulb engine from I believe the 1900,s. These are not made in model engineering. A blow torch was used to heat the top of the engine, then they were cranked over until firing. They were used after steam and a lot in as marine engines. From 1 cylinder to 4 I believe. These were massively constructed with a top rpm of 375. They idled at 60 to 75 rpm. They had a lot of torque and could swing really large propellers. Thanks for the reply Manny

Keith; The clue to the age of your micrometer is that it measures to .0001". The earliest Starrett catalog that lists a 436 with .0001" accuracy is the 1955 catalog. My guess is this is a late 1950's vintage. The micrometer looks to be in great shape, nice buy on that one. Regards; Ron Kluwe

12:45 why is it that newer ideas are not as surprising? my cellphone has a few million transistors in it, and its the result of about as many engineer hours over the years. and it still doesn't feel half as clever as that mystery tool. i guess we just take this stuff for granted.

***** When I was a kid in the late 60s and early 70s, we mostly did the typical wood projects in the winter, and then we showed steers in the summer. My older brothers were more into showing the animals than I was. I remember them living at the county fair all week, sleeping in the back of a pickup truck with the stock racks wrapped in the old style tarps. Nothing inside but a few straw bales.

Hi Keith, Not sure but it looks like you are using a sennheiser wireless. I've noticed in your videos some noise of occasion, I have the same problem with mine.
