Hi Keith, I was a frequent observer of some pine logs used in permanent construction. These logs were stripped of bark with a technique making the surface quite smooth. They were made into a peg on post style so the pegs end of one log was inserted into another beam log where a fitted hole or socket was made. These beams are then coated with Wood Life Preservative.

I'm glad you didn't have it worse. The important thing is that your family was safe until you got home. You have plenty of space for the pond now. With your sandy soil, you're limited to just digging a hole, and that's the pond. That would be a great job for a drag line and great content.

I don’t know whether or not the soil there permits it, but if I were you I’d plant oak trees. Their roots go much deeper than the pines you lost. Of course it takes them a lot more time to grow.

I'm glad you didn't have any major structural damage. We planted a live Christmas tree one year and it got to about the same size as that one. Several years ago we had a bad storm and it blew over at the same angle. Save a few cross cuts of the trunk in thin slices and make some Christmas tree ornaments.

Having been through many of those storms in southeast Alabama I can completely sympathize. God's continued blessings to you and your family and in your recovery. I noticed some short logs on and around your burn pile. If you want to do some timber frame construction with your fallen trees you might consider using those short logs for making trunnels (tree nails) to pin your timbers together.

I’m glad you guys made it through the storm. Your tree damage 21:04 would count as major property damage here in Freeville NY. What worries me is that we have had two local high wind events in the last couple years that blew down perhaps five trees. One seems to have been a mini tornado- and these were historically rare here in the southern tier of New York. Stay safe!

Columbia County, Ga, we had a very similar experience to what you describe. No damage to our house (we think) but the backyard fences and deck were destroyed. No power for 11 days. Still no internet other than our phones. For what I paid to have trees cut up, I could have bought a skid steer.

I am south of you in White Springs, Hamilton county Fla. We had a little damage. Lost some skirting around the house and some shingles from the roof. And power was off for four days so the contents of the fridge were spoiled. It could have been worse. It's good to see you are coping with the results of the storm. And you should get some good timber from those logs.🙂🙂

In 2005 I rode out hurricane Katrina. That storm blew for 12 hours and there were times when the second story of the house I was living in shook as if it were going to blow off. We were fortunate that it held but clean up afterwards took weeks, if not months. Three years ago Ida blew through here with similar results. Weeks and weeks of clean up and waiting for power and phones and internet to be restored. One of my neighbors still has a blue tarp from Ida on her house. Last month the eye wall of Francine went right over our parish here in Louisiana but by the time it got here the storm greatly diminished and there was very little damage for us locally. You can never predict what kind of damage these storms are going to do or if you will luck out.

I'm so glad that you guys are O.K. and that your wife let you back in the house when you got home. I am reminded of what Richmond looked like after isabel some 14 years ago and I really envy your skidsteer - I had to move everything on a sled made out of a sheet of plywood. RE, burning: I was on a controlled burning crew during a couple summers. As I recall, after the tiber had been cut, a crew would go over the land with large bulldozers and large rollers called choppers. These had blades which would help break the stems of the saplings and trees that were left and we would wait at least 3 weeks before we would do a burn. Given the temperatures now, it may be good to give your piles a couple more weeks.

When I worked in Groton Long Point there was a house that had 1 ton Boulders in the front yard with pad eyes attached to it, each pad eye was in the direction of a tree. It took me a little while to figure out what was all this stuff set up for and then I realized we were in a hurricane area. If they had time, they would tye off the trees. I figure you being an ingenious person, if you had something the size of a railroad tie with the rebar inside, buried vertically into the ground with anchoring points that would help all the trees from getting blown over. Most of the anchoring points we're set to keep the trees from falling into the house.

@VintageMachinery - Hi Keith, glad to see your property is almost recovered! My family and I left Georgia for my job in 2008 and I just knew this had to Georgia when I was watching. Interesting side note, my bride’s maiden name is McBrayer and they’re all from down there in Tifton… I’m not sure how many are left in the area, but they had a large family and a whole lot of farming. We were there in 1994 for Sunday Lunch and I have never seen so many fresh vegetables on a single table. You’re living in a wonderful area of the country!

Great to see the update, and hear your property is recovering. Maybe at some time, it would be good idea to document the lessons learnt and convert that into an action plan for the next few years. As I saw your video I wonder if you could get a positive experience from the event. Would replacing some of your fallen pines with a peach orchard / new trees make a positive ?

When I used to game online I once made the mistake of thinking tornado's and hurricanes are the same thing with some Americans, they laughed a little and were like err, no.. hurricanes are hundreds of miles wide. I guess if you grow up in Hurricane ally you's naturally know all about it way more. We don't have anything like that in the UK. No deadly snakes, never seen one. nor poisonous spiders, wild hogs, alligators, bears, medium size cats. Earthquakes, very high temps. We get a bit of flooding but half of that is government under-funding for a few decades tbh. A lot of clean up and hard work for sure but glad everyone is OK.

Keith, I’m in Pt St Lucie Fl. I can tell you about tornadoes! You might have seen the St Lucie County Sheriff’s Office parking garage on the national news. Not even a half mile north of me. That’s all that particular tornado took out. There are about a thousand houses just to the south of it, where I live. We were very lucky. Other neighborhoods in the county were devastated. Milton was spawning them like rabbits

Vero Beach here neighbor, those tornadoes are worse than the hurricanes. We had two, one looked like a monster tornado from the Midwest rather than the skinny ones that look more like waterspouts that Florida usually gets. Our neighborhood lost some trees and everyone had tons of branches to clean up.

Faired better than many Keith. That sandy soil you have down there is a blessing and a curse for sure. My area is all clay...20' down, still clay. LOL. So for us, the roots can't go deep because the clay is so thick, so many trees will blow over because the roots are maybe 2' deep in many trees. I don't think that the hurricane would EVER have 'good timing'. Friend of mine has been down in FL for two weeks cleaning up his condo that was devastated down there.
