RIP to the great Kelly Monteith. Great memories of a hugely talented and sadly massively underrated comedian. A very funny man.

Really sad to hear of his passing - he was such a good comedian, mixing superb visual humour, an easy-going style (repleat with American idioms), with superb observations on British life (also, hearing an American on British TV at the time was still rather rare, so he had originality as well). RIP Kelly.

Shame it took news of his death to remind me I knew the name. I vaguely remembered liking him when I was a kid. Surreal to remember where the theme music was going despite not having heard it in 40-odd years. RIP.

I'd been trying to remember his name for a few days when I was looking up a character from willy Wonka... she happened to be a guest on one of his shows... and that led me here, watched him as a youngster and remember rolling around the floor laughing at one of them.. so glad to have found this!

A year or so ago I had a feeling that there was a show I watched as a kid in the early eighties, I remembered the lead was an American and that it had a sitcom quality.....I searched for shows via google trying to find out what this memory was but to no avail. Had I imagined it? Time passed and I felt sorry for the loss of something that perhaps never existed. Today out of nowhere came "Lettuce be cool" and I happily found the name Kelly Monteith which of course led me here. I hope in future there'll be more episodes to see. But most of all thanks for converting your VHS/ Betamax or maybe some other rare format for us to see. Cheers!

Well remember this series first time around. Monteith's delivery and easy conversational style marked him out from many other comedians. Love the "Private Dick" sketch - slickly filmed as well.

Unlike many so-called comedians this guy was actually funny without being obnoxious. His comedy inspired the type of "over-educated" singing comedy that I do today as an old man. RIP Kelly Monteith a true original funny man.

I had forgotten about this show until his passing a few days ago. I remember watching these shows when I was about 11 years old. He was way ahead of his time as a writer and performer, I can't think of anything else around that era that was anything like this show. RIP Jelly. I'm surprised he didn't become a major star in the US either before or after this show. Also interesting to see a young Marina Sirtis turn up in this years before she found fame in Star Trek The Next Generation.

Kelly first popped up on des O,connor & popularised the observational comedy that's the norm today but only our folk club comedians like Billy Connolly & Jasper Carrott were doing.He said his BBC2 series was becoming "just another british sketch show" ,& he seams kinda airbrushed outta the picture now, If anyone can find a clip on his observations of fruit ,it is classic montieth.

I remember his show too-it ran for about five series, either on BBC1 or BBC2, then was repeated on one or either of the channels at the time. But then it ended; not only that, but later on since then I don't think it has ever been reshown on any channel, oddly, nor I guess did it come out on DVD. It is as if the BBC has forgotten him entirely, seeing as really he then just vanished from our screens? Thank you though!
@brucedanton3669

It is also like another series at the time, Dear Ladies, which I remember too-I know that is different really completely, but that too I don't think has ever been reshown since. Odd really though?
@simonjones7727
@simonjones7727 Жыл бұрын
@@brucedanton3669 Dear Ladies is much more risque than its original audience realized, as was indeed the original stage show. Lines after a nautical song such as "Evadne is always saying how lovely it is to have a little bit of the sailor inside of you" I suspect that much less of this would get past a modern audience. It wasn't just about nice Ivor Novello songs!

What happened was his last series on BBC he tried a different style by going behind the scenes of his own show and making his characters less likeable because they were meant to be real life, it was a little ahead of its own time people were expecting his usual show but it was more bitter and satirical and cynical and it did not go well after that we never saw him again in England, l understood it as l watched it but like others l was expecting his usual lighter show and l turned it off, the same thing happened with Phil Cool he tried something different in his last show and people just were perplexed and complained about it saying they wouldn't watch him anymore and he too vanished.

Used to watch this with my parents - they seemed to like it, if I recall Kelly is from Canada, I wonder what he is up to now - must be getting on a bit. All I really remember from the show was frequent mentions of "Gym slip and the warm custard" as some sexual innuendo. Oh my. Not in this show though.

Interesting. I had never heard of him before Brian Regan mentioned him. Some of the humour holds up. Some of it a bit dull by today’s standards. But you can very much tell that he must have inspired Jerry Seinfeld. Some of his observational bits cover some of the same territory that Seinfeld must have borrowed from.
