K-beauty has always had retinoids and other potent actives-what changed is the marketing! Korean brand Iope was actually one of the first in the WORLD to stabilize and launch a cosmetic retinoid product (which they still sell to this day😊)! Previously, these potent actives were only found in Premium and Luxury (mid-high end) brands-think Sulwhasoo, History of Whoo, Iope-as these were marketed to older women (40+ generally). Whereas the brands we’re more familiar with globally have been marketed to a younger demographic, who use social media and are more likely to speak English these days with changes in the Korean education curriculum. So now, with these “younger brands” gaining traction globally, and the demand for more actives due to western influence, we see an increase in the offerings where they were previously absent, as the Korean youth simply had no interest. The actives were always in K-beauty, they were just in “your mom’s cosmetics” brands 😅

Thanks for sharing more info! I've known about Iope for a long time of course. I think it's important to know it wasn't an integral part of a k-beauty routine as it is in the West, as you mentioned. Retinol of course has existed in skincare around the world for a long time!

Ok you mentioned a lot of my favorites here. I’ve been using the BoJ retinal as my face and neck retinoid basically since it launched. I’ve emptied 5 tubes and I don’t plan to stop using it any time soon. I’ve had very bad experiences with strong retinoids but this one I can use DAILY with no irritation. A holy grail, if they ever stop making it I will cry. Illiyoon…. What can be said that hasn’t been said already. I use it on my face as part of my retinoid sandwich and on my hands at work. I wash my hands a lot at work so I go through it pretty quickly. It’s a nice waxy formula so it doesn’t leave residue when I touch things. I have gone through a full 500g tub of it and made a sizable dent in my second tub.

Hey Kelly, love this video ❤ I have some finds I thought might interest you. I lately started using 'the lab' oligo toner (simple but nice) as well as their green flavonoid cream (very interesting. Light yet nourishing). I've also discovered the pure'am barrier cream (delicious for evening or winter time). And lastly pyunkang yul Ato soothing mist (feels like water but then... Strangely replenishing). All fragrance free.

I love watery toners that come in massive bottles so I can use them as sprays. I do that with the round lab toner sometimes. Admittedly, I like the Make Prem so much more. I have tried a lot of hydrating serums/moisturizers/toners/essences and NOTHING gives me the hydration that make:prem does! I don’t even have to layer it to get that hydration, which is really convenient. I have gone through 1.5 FULL SIZE bottles of it.

I found this new serum essence at Marshall's . Farm stay. Clear snow mucus moisture toner and snail mucus moisture Emulsion. I love it 7.99 for 5 ounce bottles. I love korean skin care. I also use the dr ceuracle. Great moisturizers.

Won't go without the BOJ Eye serum, Dr Ceuracle Vegan Kombucha Tea Essence or the Cosrx snail essence. The Heimish Cleanser was was so drying/stripping, all 3 BOJ serums weren't bad but they did nothing for my skin. I'm torn from getting the Haruharu sunscreen and the P. Calm Water Barrier Sunscreen.

Numbuzin Toner 3 Super Glowing Essence definitely lives up to its name. After wetting White Rabbit Naked Cotton sheet mask stripswith this essence and placind them on my face, I cover it with one of those generic silicone masks attached behind the ears (with openings for the eyes and mouth) and leave it on for at least an hour. Remember to first fully hydrate the skin after cleansing, very important. The glowing results are amazing and last for more than a day if you spritz your face with water or lightly splash with water before moisturizing again (absolutely NO hyaluronic acid in the moisturizer). I can't say I noticed an appreciable difference when I just used it as a toner as part of my routine, but when used as a mask the results are amazing.

I dont agree with some of the products but I tried many of them :) When it comes to cleanser I do really recommend the isntree green tea cleanser as well as their yam one for dry skin or as a gentle morning wash for all skin types. Both are amazing and I switched over from krave beauty. Also a recent new discovery is the benton vitamin c serum 20% - the formulation is without water and way less iritating, non oxidizing

I love K beauty products. I think the Cosrx dual essence is superior to the snail essence because it feels nicer on the skin. I find the snail essence can dry out pretty quickly

@paulayarbrough6930 the texture is not as slimy as the OG version and pretty watery. For me, the OG version feels like you leave a thin film on your skin once it dries out. That's why I prefer the dual essence. It's true the pump gives you uneven distribution of products.

Hi Kelly I have been using K beauty for several years now and it mostly works well with my highly reactive rosacea and eczema prone skin. Cleansing oils, toners, essences and serums mostly come from K beauty brands for me. As I have extremely dry skin I tend to find a better match in moisturiser from Western brands as I love a rich buttery cream and K beauty tends not to offer those eg the Illyoon is far too lightweight for me. SPF I stick to my longwear Ultrasun and have for more than a decade (it’s a European spf). Quite a few of the products mentioned I have tried and unfortunately some of them don’t work for me eg Dr Ceuracle and the Cosrx snail, but I like all the toners mentioned and the Benton propolis essence/serum is a favourite. Beauty of Josean serums have worked well as does their retinal eye cream. Their moisturiser is fine as a Summer pick as it sits really well under my spf btw, but it is too lightweight for my skin outwith Summer. Best wishes x

I think the I'm From Rice Toner is better for oily skin. My skin is more on the dry sensitive side and this actually stung my skin. I didn't find it hydrating or moisturizing. It was more of a thin watery texture but I could feel it sitting on my skin.

You don't need both, however, they are different in texture and can be effectively layered in the same routine for lots of hydration.

If you're using products with hyaluronic acid in them, that is very likely a large part of your problem. When the air is dry the hyaluronic acid sucks the moisture out of your skin. When the humidity is high, it draws the humidity from the air into your skin. Hyaluronic acid is grossly overrated and should be avoided like the plague.

I avoid anything with hyaluronic acid in it like the plague. They keep talking about how it attracts moisture from the air, but if there is low or no moisture in the air, then it "attracts" it out of your skin, and everyone ignores the fact that not everyone lives in a high humidity environment. Especially in the winter. This slavish devotion to hyaluronic acid is absolutely ridiculous and it's moisturizing claims claims not borne out in real life experience.

It was reformulated in 2022 to have a thicker texture with more emollients, nothing new on formula as of this comment (some people suspect it's being reformulated again because of stock issues, I haven't heard anything concrete.)
