Ken Rex McElroy was a career criminal who terrorized the small town of Skidmore, Missouri for over 20 years. In the span of his life he was charged with crimes ranging from arson to attempted murder, yet no matter the charge thrown at him, nor the evidence to convict him, he never spent more than a night in jail for the crimes and was never convicted. Until one day, after years of plaguing the residents of Skidmore and no justice being served someone took the law into their own hands and killed Ken Rex McElroy. In a crowd of more than 30 witnesses, yet to this day the case remains unsolved.

@@ericcarlton87 It’s disappointing how much people seem to prefer the same vigilante justice Ken Mc Elroy felt entitled to, above actual justice. The moment the village dared to come together and form an armed posse, they could have easily walked into the courtroom and demand the right legal action as well as a complete reshuffle of power. As it is right now, that same village allowed Trena to be kidnapped as a child, took away her dignity and left her with a bunch of kids without a future. As I understand it, both she and her kids are now outcasts of society without any compensation for having lost their main source of income. When did she lose her status as a victim before the town suddenly decided not to agree anymore with the man that took her unopposed? Why would it have been her responsibility as a child when the whole village decided to let Mc Elroy have her? Up to the point that village decided to turn against their bully by taking his life, they were de facto agreeing with him. In some cases even protecting him by choosing not to come forwards. Not to deny the fact most of those choices were involuntary. But trying to state the obvious here, especially since a majority seems to happily ignore that reality. It’s telling how kidnapping a child, raping it and forcing it to marry him, wasn’t perceived to be worth correcting. But the moment one man (and thus all men’s) life was at stake, they formed a posse and dealt with him. Don’t you see how Ken Mc Elroy was, and sadly still is, merely a pionier in determining the boundaries of ‘accepted’ vigilantism? Or could you argue reasonably how the next ‘bully’ who would ‘only’ decide to kidnap and rape children won’t get away with it in that town this time?

@@nest1363 in certain circumstances (most honestly) the justice system fails. This was a case that needed justice and since the system failed them they took justice into their own hands. Do I agree with it? Not sure. Was it the right thing to do? No. It’s sad the entire town felt the only way left to feel at peace was to take him out. Personally, I don't condone violent vigilante justice because when one person is playing both judge and executioner they're bound to make some mistakes, but in this case, when literally the whole town agreed that something wrong was happening and after going through the legal means nothing was improved I think it was ok. But more than that I think it's just super interesting, like imagine coming from a town famous for killing someone outside in broad daylight and purposefully never solving the case, or better yet, moving into a town like that. It sure would be an experience.

I'm someone who was recently harmed by someone like Ken. A "man" who has a 20+ year history of harming others, and it nearly resulted in my death (I'm not the first he has nearly killed either.) For some reason he keeps getting away with it. The police do nothing, people still support him, and he's just going to keep accumulating victims. Honestly, "people" like this, sometimes leave little other choice when the justice system consistently fails.

I hope the children he fathered were able to find some semblance of normalcy in life. I can't imagine what it would be like to have a rabid dog for a father. I know it's very difficult for most to break free from that kind of upbringing. If I was one of the townspeople who "witnessed" his death, I'd be afraid one of his kids would want to seek "justice." Makes me wonder how many of the "witnesses" moved out of town for that reason. Although, the name Skidmore in and of itself is enough reason to want the get the hell out.

I lived about 2 hours south of Skidmore and had customers in Maryville, Missouri, not far from Skidmore. One day, in the mid 1980s, I drove into Skidmore to a corner gas station that you can see in the move and in the book which I think was titled "Hurry Sundown". No one at the gas station would talk to me, said they had no idea what I was talking about. One tight ship. Everyone who was an eye witness to the shooting of McElroy will one day be dead and gone. Maybe years from now someone will come forward, but I doubt it.
