Hello! I like what you do. I need your opinion... if you can give me some advice about buying a camera and a lens. I want to take pictures of my children and pictures (both close and far) in nature with mountains, waters, sun and shadows. I am not locked into any make or model, however I would be happy to be able to purchase the kit somewhere around $1000

Super interesting ! Some of the answers separate true pros from deletants! 60 couples in 1 hour! 1 couple per 60 seconds. It would have been my exit line! Pro equipment is not all equal. Modern digital like Canon are the reason. Sure I still use a Leica M3, also not a pro anymore. .Banks of strobes, OMG! Bravo Jr. Harry Langdon and Ken Rockwell.

Hi Ken. My D80 from 2007 recently died on me. I spend days reading through your website that year in order to come to a decision about which Nikon to purchase. My Grandad got me into photography and he passed down his old Nikon gear to me when he passed away. With the D80 I loved its weight, grip, controls and top screen particularly. I am looking for a new camera after several years away from the hobby (I've done a few weddings in the past, but not to an insanely professional level - I'm more into nature photography). I am locked in to Nikon and having always enjoyed SLRs and DSLRs I'm unsure about jumping to mirrorless. I'm buying a cheap 2nd-hand D80 to see me through the year, and I've never been interested in megapixels with DSLRs, but having looked through a few old D80 photos on a 27 inch 4k monitor, I'm underwhelmed. You touched on megapixels at a more extreme level in this video (billboards), but could you give me any advice about your feelings on megapixels? Do you find there's a sweet spot where it becomes pointless to go beyond (~20mp for example)? 10.2mp was beyond my needs in 2007 but it's now 16 years later and I wonder if I need to move with the times! My budget would be less than $1000 and I'm happy to purchase a second-hand camera. I just need to be careful to balance nostalgia and modern sensor/resolution technology when thinking about what camera to buy next. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've always said the lenses are the most important 'part' of a camera, but I wonder if I stick with a DSLR from the mid-2000s, am I really limiting myself with all the wonderful tech that now exists; or have DSLRs not really evolved all that much in hte last 15 years? Many thanks.

Pixel count hasn’t been relevant for decades, even a 12 MPH camera has more than you can see on any display. See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/pixel-dumping.htm and www.kenrockwell.com/tech/portrait-lenses.htm

Nikon made good DSLRs, but they are not a leader in Mirrorless. Every little of what you may own works well adapter to Z, if you want my advice for Mirrorless, upgrade to Canon. See

Yeah. People give too much credits to the tools. I don't say that isn't important, but all of us have different prefence for tools we use. Clients should not tell us what tool we have to use, but rather ask us about our pictures that we took. As long as they like our work there is nothing to worry about. That is really trust issue i think.

Tools have nothing to do with the result; better ones just make the process a little easier. Thanks!
