In some countries you can sign up for any blood tests you want (you’ll have to pay for them from your pocket). It’s much harder to brush off objective data on result sheet. But what most people would want is - being sent to blood tests from doctor, as insurance (if you have one) company will cover the tests.

I have lost hope in practioners the day i was prescribed ciprofloxican. The saying that Drs know better than us is very wrong misleading. There is so much information readily for us to learn about our health even better. I had to go all out to seek ways to minimise the damage cipro has done to my nervous system.

I'm so glad this is being discussed. I lost my 20's to a B12 deficiency that turned out to be genetic. My original doctors said there was no way it could be a B12 deficiency, because I would have lost weight. Ugh. That was the only missing symptom. I finally collapsed and was taken to the ER. I got under the care of an excellent doctor from Nigeria, she was amazing and tested me for nutritional deficiencies. She was the one who discovered I was near death I was so low, despite all the other doctors saying they couldn't find anything wrong, it was all in my head, etc. Now I take the methylated forms of B12 and folate, plus the P-5-P version of B6. It changed my entire life, and guess what? I lost weight after getting treated, because I could move my body again. Don't let anyone say that being on the heavier side means you can't be deficient, it's not true. I hope everyone in these comments gets relief from what ails you, and I'm so glad more people are talking about this insidious and life destroying deficiency!

I hope you don't mind me asking this question. How is a B-12 deficiency genetic? I'm asking because I've had it for many years, and I am not a vegetarian. I have all the symptoms the doctor mentioned. I recall asking a doctor if it could be inherited, and I was told no. No doctor seems to know why I'm low in it. Many years ago, a gastro doctor gave me tests (blood test for intrinsic factor, endoscopy and colonoscopy, which showed no reason for the deficiency). I've taken supplementation on and off, but my levels eventually go down when I stop the supplements. Thank you for whatever info you could give me.

@@lenorapalminteri1002 MTHFR and MTRR genes have variable expression. You don't necessarily need a biopsy to prove the loss of cells, these mutations can be heterozygous or homozygous and have an effect on a spectrum. There are at least 40 different mutations (SNP's) that can happen, so there will be varying degrees of deficiency. Please look up MTHFR and MTRR single nucleotide polymorphisms. One doesn't need the antiquated "Pernicious Anemia" to have deleterious mutations. That is very outdated. I had a severe B12 deficiency without pernicious anemia because I had adequate folate status that stopped the typical megaloblastic anemia found with PA. Adequate folate intake can stop the red blood cells from getting over sized while you're still deficient, so it doesn't show on a blood test. Also, since the various forms of cobalamin can be absorbed in other ways than directly through cells creating intrinsic factor in the stomach, it's far more than just what happens in the stomach. For example, there's a recent finding that cobalamins need other metallothioneins created by adequate zinc and copper intake to pass through the brain blood barrier. Keep in mind that Cyanocobalamin is only one form, I take methylcobalamin, there's adenosyl cobalamin, etc. further down the metabolic line that may work better depending on how you metabolize it. Regular B12 is not a one size fits all solution. Look into Jarrow's Methylcobalamin/Methylfolate/Pyridoxyl-5-Phosophate version of highly absorbable B vitamins.

I have Crohn’s, am overweight and am frequently malnourished in various vitamins (D, iron, folic acid, and I suspect B12). Overweight definitely doesn’t mean you can’t be malnourished.

@@tamarlively2922 wow, how on earth did you figure all of this out? Regular doctors just don't know this information. I'm talking about functional med docs too. I've been to a number of them and they just don't have this training. Also, I often feel bad when taking many supplements, especially B vitamins...

It just confirmed what I thought my problem was...on top of those symptoms I have internal tremor all over my body, even in my head; I can hear it when I put one side of my head on my pillow...Iiterally hear the tremor!! Thanks a million!

@@justsandra71 Make sure you are taking the CORRECT Vitamin B. For example, B12 should be methylcobalamin - this is the "active" form of B12. B1 and B6 should also be the active types. This is so important. If you take the wrong form of B12, it will actually cause a deficiency. Also, make sure you take Folate, and not Folic Acid. Dr. Berg has the information on his videos re the active B vitamins. I also got this information re taking "active" B vitamins from a neurologist. I hope this is helpful!

I'm 72yr. old and was feeling really tired all the time and sleeping 12 hr. whereas normally 6-7 hr. sleep was enough. A friend mentioned that she had the same thing and her doctor recommended she take B Vitamins which solved the problem so I started taking B6+B12 with Folic Acid and within 24hr. noticed a great improvement. Now I'm waking up feeling refreshed after 7 hr. sleep. Hope this helps someone.

I have been misdiagnosed for years, which has caused muscles tightness and atropy, hyper-mobility and all over pain. They finally tested everything and then did the test to see I has pernicious anemia. I am slow recovering and rebuilding my life, but slowly depleting B12 over a life was making me disable. Hopefully this video will also help others advocate for their health. I know B12 can be low for many reason, my situation was not detected for over 20 years, only impacting every system in my body. Thank you for your video and trying to help others.

Thanks for this. I went and had my B12 checked and it came back 95, which is severely deficient, and I'm eating a lot of meat! I'm on B12 injections now. OMG what a DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Heart palpitations...GONE. Fatigue....GONE. Dropping things....STOPPED. Memory problems....GONE. I can't thank you enough. No one thought to check for it.

I am from the UK where we have the National Health, the word health in this instance should be sickness. I asked my doctor if he would test me for B12 and he refused and told me I was wrong even to consider it. I can't go to another doctor, we are stuck with whatever doctor we get, unless we pay for private treatment which very few can afford. If it wasn't for you Dr Ken I would be walking around feeling like I was dying. Changing to a Keto diet and boosting my B12 with a high dose supplement has really improved matters. Being 75, every time I saw a doctor they would tell me that it was my age and these things happen as you grow older. I decided to sod the lot of them and do my own research. Thank you for all your help.

That's awful, I'm also in the UK. I went to the doctors with a few symptoms mainly reoccurring mouth ulcers and my GP did blood work on me instantly, they then started a route of what would work best with me to get my levels up as I'm in my 20s and within 3 months I was on injections. Maybe look at getting a new surgery or complaining

You're not stuck with the doctor you get in the UK. You put your name on the register of the doctor you choose. You also have the right to request a second opinion from another surgery, hospital etc. You don't get allocated a doctor.... You actively have to register yourself with one.

I was admitted to hospital with a urine infection that wouldn’t budge. I had to have 2 blood transfusions because I was so badly deficient. They started asking me about symptoms and everything they listed I realised I had and was just putting up with it. I was becoming really breathless when just going upstairs, my tongue was covered in mouth ulcers it was so painful but I never knew it was a sign of B12 deficiency. I was exauhsted all the time. The good news is I didn’t feel immediately great after the blood transfusions but as soon as I got my first B12 injection I felt absolutely amazing. I didn’t realise how sick I was until I started to feel better. My GP completely missed it.

Since then have you been tested for pernicious anemia? It won’t matter how much you take if you aren’t able to produce intrinsic factor. It is genetic and requires injections of B12 and is a major problem if not diagnosed.

#1 neuropathy ... I had this. It started just once in a while and progressed to all the time every day over the course of a couple of years. All my doctor said was, "You must be diabetic," despite my 5.0 Hgb A1c. I finally found a way to get my B12 checked without that doctor's "permission" and found out just how deficient I was ... due to gluten! After going gluten-free (and supplementing with vitamin B12), I have been neuropathy-free for almost 5 years!

I’ve been doing research about wheat. I have found that modern flour is devoid of nutrition and actually inhibits a person from absorbing nutrients. I now grind whole SPROUTED wheat berries which have released the phytic acid which ruins your gut. Gluten isn’t always the enemy...phytic acid is!

Oh my gosh. I had so many of these symptoms. I even had 2 pretty bad falls because my balance was so off. I had such difficulty with word retrieval that I was starting to think I was getting dementia. The neuropathy was terrible , too. My best description of the neuropathy was that it felt like my feet were on fire and someone was trying to put it out with an ice pick. Come to find out my B12 was really low, as was my iron level. I received 3 iron infusions and B12 shots every 2 weeks for 3 months, then monthly and I finally feel human again! Wish I had seen this when I felt so awful.

I had horrible depression for years which got worse after having my daughters. I also suspected back then basing on my symptoms that I had underactive thyroid and I've read that I am more likely to be B12 and D3 deficient because of that so I started to supplement both of them in high doses (1000-2000 mcg methylcobolamine and 10.000 IU D3) and after 18 months I realised I am not depressed anymore.

@@conniewong2142 I am taking 1000mcg methylcobolamine once or twice a week if I remember and 9000-10,000 IU of D3 around 3 times a week. But it's after around 10 years of supplementation. Everyone is different and you might need a different doses. If you are able to check your levels before you start taking anything that would be the best but if you can't, then maybe then maybe try for 3 months then take couple of weeks break and test your levels.

@@conniewong2142 and my B12 level is around 600-700 last few times I tested. D3 was 32 after 7 years of supplementation so I bumped it up to 30,000IU for couple of months taking vitamin K2 with it but I am back to 'lower' dose now.

I'm a 38 healthy female... Have been to the ER on and off as well as to my PCP for tingling and numbness in my hands, dizziness, SOB, fatigue, my tongue that felt swollen which made me scared to sleep. I was sent home every time with being told to make sure I'm drinking water and then my Doctor said it was just Anxiety and panic disorder. . After my last ER visit the doctor ordered folate and B12 tests, my level was 149. I'm so thankful for getting it finally figured out.

I have it. And when I’m low on b12 I get dizzy, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, my memory is very bad I forget things, my balance is off and I feel drunk when I walk, it feels like I have an ear infection, sleepiness, my bones ache, I also get diarrhea and anxiety.

I went to my Doc 10 years ago and told her my fatigue might be B-12 deficiency. She was a new Doc, just finished her residency. So she sent me to a Endocrinologist, who basically refused to do any tests and said I LOOKED fine. So I went back to my Doc and she said she would research the test that my mother had taken to find her B-12 deficiency. It’s called a Methymalonic acid test. My score was 885. When I went in for the results, she said she was surprised that I had the energy to come in. She put me on B-12 injections, and after about 6 weeks, I felt infinitely better. That was 12 years ago, and I still take my B-12. Combined with my hypothyroidism, which my mom also has, and we are both meat eaters, we both feel so much better. My pharmacist said B-12 and hypothyroidism are very common together. Check it out.

I experienced every single one of these symptoms except swollen/smooth tongue, explained it to my doc and they never mentioned b12 deficiency🤦🏾‍♀️ and now that i think about it, it happened during like a 2-3 month period when i was only eating clean, no meat, no processed food, no supplements. Members of my female family via our maternal lineage suffer from autoimmune Pernicious Anaemia. My mother's GP refused to treat her routinely, kept taking blood samples following her B12 shots and stopping treatment claiming her blood was 'normal'. My mother went without B12 sometimes for a seven months to a year between. She ended up losing so much weight that she had to be placed onto a drip in hospital (she was basically a skeleton, just around four stone in weight). Her body deteriorated and she was diagnosed with several other conditions. Her GP still kept playing around with her regular shots, despite a hospital consultant (in the U.K.) stating that they were to be followed. Her GP insisted on prescribing antidepressants even though depression was a symptom of her irregularly treated condition. Nine years later she was diagnosed with vascular dementia because my repeated requests to take her declining mental health seriously were ignored. I even printed out medical information regarding B12 and mental health decline with recommendations on how to reverse those for the GP, but she was 'too afraid' to overdose my mother with the vitamin and refused to see the link between dementia and it; even when the Head of Haematology at King's College in London (prestigious) had advised me that high and regular doses could be administered regularly to see if the early onset dementia could be reversed (there is a small window of opportunity), that many GPs treated it wrongly and that any GP who told me there was no link between dementia and B12 deficiency was wrong (that it was well documented). Nothing I begged for was permitted. My mother eventually declined to the point that I could no longer care for her (violent outbursts also being a major issue; I had young children). Two years later, after a suspected stroke, she passed from a pulmonary embolism. The only book which helped to inform me at the time was Sally Pacholock's Could It Be B12. There are so many different deficiencies, particularly today with modern living and diets (many people socially drink a lot, take prescription drugs and eat a substandard diet), which are often the root cause of symptoms diagnosed as something else or which contribute to that. I have known so many people who go to visit their doctor and are not thoroughly investigated and diagnosed with a condition which meds are thrown at. They then deteriorate and require further prescriptions. The entire situation has given me zero faith in most doctors and medicine. It is great to see doctors like this one but we need far, far more. There simply are not enough and the ones most of us encounter are arrogant and apathetic, often refusing to listen and patronise you when you attempt to raise these issues. As a result, the last time I saw a doctor for myself was over thirteen years ago.

I'm so very sorry you went through all that and I'm so sorry your mother had to suffer needlessly and I'm sorry for your loss! I suspect this might of been what happened with my mom too. She passed in May of 2020 they claim from early onset dementia. It's infuriating something as simple as a vitamin deficiency is overlooked that could save lives and all the suffering! I want to thank you for telling about the book Could it be B12, by Sally Pacholok. I'm going out today to try and get it as I feel my daughter and I are both vitamin B 12 deficient... a few months ago I emphasized to my daughters Dr. to please try a B12 injection to see if it could help with her severe tiredness, I was shocked when he agreed, but come to find out he told us he was out of the methylcoblamin form and gave her the cheaper cyanocoblamin when we told him it did absolutely nothing! We are now taking a highly recommended sublingual B12 from a functional medicine Dr. and we are both feeling a bit better and we notice if we don't take it. I'm very interested to read the book and learn more! I hope you are doing ok, take care. 😊🙏❤

I have been a vegetarian for 30 years, and vegetarians are often deficient in B12. About 10 years ago, my hair began falling out. I was also tired and depressed, but I didn’t connect those things together at the time. I got referred to a doctor at the hospital, and he looked at my scalp for a minute, then said that there was nothing to be done and basically, to get used to it. He never even suggested a single explanation for why my hair was falling out. I did my own research, and found that hair loss can be a sign of B12 deficiency, amongst other things. As B12 deficiency was likely because I am vegetarian, I began taking a supplement. My hair stopped falling out and grew back. If I had listened to that doctor, I’d probably be bald now. Plus, the deficiency would have worsened, and I would no doubt have developed many of the symptoms in this video. It could have become very serious indeed.

Yeah and we got to be our own Advocate don't we? If you wait for some doctor or someone to tell you something that you should have known by then like you said you'd be bald or dead I've been so exhausted for years and didn't know what was wrong and I finally was diagnosed with B12 deficiency I thank you for your information I'm going to try those together and I'll help my family to that have been with this disorder God bless you and he does

I was reslly ill for a couple of years and literally felt so ill i thought I was dying, eventually I had blood tests thel shown I had enlarged blood cells and hsd pernicious Anaemia, I had palpitations, shortness of breath and literally no B12 in my body, I had the burning and tingling in my hands and feet amongst other things, I was running on empty, what I cant believe is that a simple blood test a couple of years before would have saved me years of felling like I was going mad, I had to have an injection every other day for 2 weeks and have been told that I have to have B12 injections every three months for the rest of my life... that was 6 years ago. Im like a differnt person; I would say to anyone who believes they hsve B12 deficiency, to go to the doctors and ask for the test, then at least you can rule it out and if it is B12 it is easily and readily treatable... stay well people and remember when there is something wrong our body lets us know x❤

2 summers ago I was sleeping 12 hours a night and having a 4 hour nap everyday but was still exhausted. I was also having visual and auditory hallucinations constantly. Schizophrenia runs in my family so I started seeing a psychiatrist. I finally got a family doctor at that time as well. After blood work I found out I'm severely anemic and started getting a shot every week. After the 3rd shot it was blissfully quiet for the first time in over a year. I can't go longer than 2 weeks without a shot or it all starts back up again. Its amazing how a vitamin deficiency can affect your life!

@@viv201 Seems like I might be on the same boat. I've been having endless fatigue and brain fog for months now. All my bloodwork and tests have been normal, but B12 is the only thing that seems to be on a steady decline, even though it's still in a decent range. I just got more bloodwork yesterday, so here's hoping it's only a B12 deficiency and nothing more serious!

@@viv201 as I suspected, about an hour ago I got a call about the low B12 levels. I wasn't given shots, but I'm supposed to take 2000mcg tablets per day and see how that helps. Here's hoping it helps soon enough!

Hello Dr. Berry! You were in the KZbin's algorithm to be a recommendation and I took the chance and I am glad that I did! I like your "Man of the People" approach to share with us things that the largest part of medical professionals have forgotten that our bodies and nature conspire to fix us. I have some of the ringing in the ear, but it 1st appeared as I was "T-Boned" by a drunken driver & my ear hit the window of the truck I was driving. I've got the bones that ache, not in the joints and I have been told that I have some type of Vitamin D and B deficiencies. I'd been leaning towards a shot from the doctor, but I'd grown up eating organ meat & going outside. Somewhere I'd heard that organ meat was bad for you. Why is there such a fluctuation in these things every so many years to be in direct opposition to the past? As my financial situation has an upturn I will do your Patreon. Thank you Dr Berry. I've liked and subbed. So glad you're here. I've been vegetarian since 4 th grade. Yes, I know that is young but I went into shock when I wondered into a slaughter house on a ranch. Young kids just don't realize what all that meat really is that their parents feed them. As an animal rescuer and activist involved with groups in other countries I learned of the horrific slow and deliberate tortures in China and many Asian countries, seemingly worse than others. I became vegan. My family Practioner has somehow overlooked my symtons and blood work it seems. Even though I do watch my B-12 intake with supplements and foods I'm having some of the symptoms you mentioned. I'm 73 now. Bless you for all your work.

I have lupus, am on some harsh medications, am anemic, and have arthritic symptoms, so it was hard to differentiate my B12 deficiency from everything else until a fun new symptom appeared: crawling skin. It felt like tiny bugs kept landing and walking on me, even on body parts covered by clothes. B12 cleared that right up

The symptoms vary so much. I was at deaths door with low Vit B. I had shortness breath, couldn't walk 1mtr without feeling like I was going to faint, I couldn't cope with stress, had anxiety symptoms, brain fog, and the worst lethargy ever could stay in bed for hours, a day. Diagnosed myself did lab work, doctor had no idea.. I was a mess. But thankgod for the internet and re search and doctors like you that help us. 👌

I was severely B12 deficient until this past April. I started to enter pernicious anemia. I have been over looked and misdiagnosed for the past 25 years. It took a hair folic test that my daughter bought me to find out. Within two weeks I saw an incredible change by three months all of my illnesses disappeared. I haven't felt this good in years.

Honey they get more than your co pay. Your visits are usually fat...if you have any type of Medicaid or Medicare, they pay for about 4 minutes of service.

My aunt suffered for years with a range of different symptoms. The worst thing was chronic ear infections that moved into her sternomastoid bone and was so bad they had to remove the bone. It took years but a natural path figured it out! Shes better these days but still gets very sick some days at random.

Thank you for discussing this, Dr. Berry. I’m sure there are many people who have it, and don’t know it, or won’t do anything to check it out. I’m 77 years old, and I was diagnosed with a B12 deficiency around 20 years ago. My doctor found it thru a blood test during an annual physical. I’ve been taking a B12 injection (cyanocobalamin) every month ever since. The worst symptom I have, is that I become very tired and lethargic. My father also had a B12 deficiency, and I guess I inherited it. Sometimes it comes a day or two before I receive my monthly injection, and sometimes I’m doing well on my injection day. So, it varies. Fortunately, these are the only symptoms I’ve had with my B12 deficiency. Other people may experience even more symptoms. Anyway, I just wanted to concur, and tell those who don’t know, that a B12 deficiency is a real thing, and I’m happy that my doctor found it early. Keep up the good work.

Yes! He needs to discuss pernicious anemia further, as if someone can’t make intrinsic factor, they won’t be able to get it from food or a supplement.

There's an amazing B12 patch with all the active forms of B-vits by PatchMD and it saved my daughter's life since she will not do injections. I would use the patches daily between shots to keep your energy up.

I think when you go to your Dr they should check vitamin levels and pH levels!

But that would require having tests done, and that costs time and money unfortunately. Insurances rarely cover tests (that you ask for), at least in Europe.
