Working at a health food store (Meat dept.), the consensus I take away from the majority of Vegans I've encountered is that it is more of an animal treatment/rights issue to them than a dietary health issue. The perplexing thing to me is that in the wild, animal predators are incredibly brutal and merciless to their prey.

I actually respect the animals rights part of the vegan argument. But their health arguments make no sense. Reminds me of the reefer madness saga - distortion of the truth for a political agenda.

When confronted by a vegetarian/vegan about raising and killing my own meat, I ask them if they have ever seen how a carnivore treats it's prey. Then I tell them when they have convinced all the predators to treat their prey "humanely" and to eat more carbs, then they might have a leg to stand on. I have a steer going to the butcher next month. He has had a great life running around with my goats. He gets chin rubs and neck scratches. He loves it. When his day comes, he won't know what hits him.

I find the explanation a bit unfinished. So here is my try: If you eat carbs only they end up in the blood stream and the cells will take them up until they are at max energy capacity and will then close the gate leaving the excess carbs in the blood stream. If you eat fats only they end up in the blood stream and the cells will take them up until they are at max energy capacity and will then close the gate leaving the excess fats in the blood stream. BUT if you only eat fats the insulin level stays low as the body doesn't need it to convert sugar to fat to store it in the fat cells, because you ate no sugar. The excess fat can just be stored in the fat cells. If you now live on your cells will use up some of their storage and after a while they need new energy. As insulin is low your body can instantly use the fat from the fat cells and replenish the cells as they slowly open up their gates depending on how much they still got in store. BUT if you only eat sugar the insulin skyrockets and the body will use it to convert sugar to fat, and the insulin will veeeery slowly go back down. Then after a while of living on your cells slowly need new energy and open up their gates BUT insulin is still high so your body tries to get some fat out, but insulin just constantly pushes it back into the fat cells, thus leaving your body in an energy lock, where it is slowly using up the storages in the cells but can't deliver new energy from the fat cells. As the body has now locked itself out of it's own energy the only thing it can do to get anything into the cells is to make you eat more. Thus repeating the cycle. Now you are constantly hungry and constantly putting more energy in your fat storage making you fatter and fatter. Some people will get used to this and have faster falling insulin levels but they probably never fall fast enough to allow them to fully run on fat fast enough before they become too hangry again. I'm probably not 100% right, but this is how i currently understand it.

How do you know it was MS and not Subacute Combined Degeneration (from vitamin B12 deficiency, etc)? What were your symptoms? Just interested because I've heard of people who've reported reversing MS with carnivore, particularly raw carnivore. MS and SCD are pretty similar. It makes me wonder if there is even any such thing as MS, and it's all just nutritionally related.

So true for many if us, our parents grew up with rationing. Meat was a treat during thier chikdhood and again during WW2. So we did not waste meat. Even our once a year turkey (carcass) was turned into soup after Thanksgiving. Funny, my Dad was diagnosed with diabetes at 42 and Mom reminded us not to eat sugar all the time. All 10 of us kids had/have with diabetes. She was right about sugar but now we know so much more. Wish my siblings would listen.

@@GaryHighFruit It is one thing to express your pleasure and success as a vegan, fine. It is another to criticize someone else's experience and tell them to get their head out of a hole. Tacky on either side just makes that person look less credible. The valid point is that many people, over time, find they need meat to feel good again. I myself had people I knew, him and her yoga instructors and her also a massage therapist. She got quite ill until she added back meat. She made point of telling me this as I knew them before as vegans and she was warning me. I am happy you found what works for you. Some day we will discover why some people seem to do well as vegans and others don't. I suspect it has to do with the microbiome. Wishing you well.

You clearly do not understand amino acid profiles which differ between fruit and meat. The lump sum total in fruit is not only less, but the amino acid profile of fruit is lacking the critical bottleneck aminos. The two sources are not equivalent. Furthermore I look on KZbin at the mostly fruit crowd and I see a lot of very skinny people. Compare the top 5 carnivore KZbinrs to the top 5 fruits KZbinrs. Massive difference. SAD!

These people are in STARVATION mode there is no amount of social conditioning that would prevent them from sourcing anything to keep them going. Those lacking sufficient animal meat tap out or are taken out due to medical conditions from lack of protein, animal meat. They are each motivated to stay bc they can win $500,000. I studied what I was doing and had to do the ultimate elimination diet, pure carnivore. My body screamed at me with delight when I ate my first hamburger patty in years. On the veg diet never ate high carb or seed oil and stayed metabolically healthy but the nausea and diarrhea from all the kale, blueberries and turmeric made me too thin and frail. So, I am trained in anthropology as my foundation. I think where I find the most conflict in these narratives is in our physical hardwiring for seeking out sweetness. As Berry indicates, there was a survival reason for seeking out sweetness. While obviously we have access to too much carbohydrate abundance now, there was a time in our history would these would have been great energy stores in a time when we were incredibly physical. For example, humans have been eating honey and fruit as far back as we have any type of physical evidence. So the fact that we have sweet seeking genes, if you will, tells me that there is something that the body wants from that. It is not just a poison, as Bart suggests. It may be of course poisonous in excess, but that is a different statement. I recognize that it may be some of us simply can't have it now, because we cannot moderate and we are not living a life which requires such a enormous physicality that it is handled through other balancing systems which would have been natural in the past. But I think it's disingenuous to present it as an absolute poison that our bodies don't need and wouldn't seek, because that is contrary to all that evidence. I also observe that in hot climates, using glucose as fuel is a much more prevalent and typically well-managed tendancy. There's a reason why all the sweetest fruit tends to be equatorial, it seems. I don't even myself like very sweet fruits, but when I am in the tropics, having them is not only refreshing but seems to be kind of all that one wants. I rarely would want to eat meat or anyting overly savory. But in that case, I am not really combining fat and carbs, but rather naturally switching from one fuel base to the other. I do think there is something to the notion of climate and the foundation of one's diet. This would obviously have to do with historical availability, but I think also there are probably biological reasons.

Thanks; I love nuance. As a low res version, sugar = poison is probably ok for the typical American who's way on the other extreme (cola / energy drinks, pastries). But for example the honey treat at Indian restaurants I'm not avoiding with a filling meal, as my nutrition is otherwise healthy.

@@derekteetv how do you define “healthy?” Do you avoid all grains, including the rice so prevalent at Indian restaurants, and all the legume-based foods there? And the industrial seed oil-fried things like papadums, samosas, and pakoras? What about things like saag paneer, or bangan bharta? Both loaded with oxalate and solanine, respectively? Do you eat purely carnivore at an Indian restaurant? That would be a good trick, in my experience.

I thought Gregor was so spot on about so much... I did vegan, which got me away from the crap I was eating. I did feel better, BUT, something was missing.... the problem was grains, sugar (which I see vegans eat plenty). As an elder, I was disgusted by the fact that I couldn't see my male danlge when standing at attention... for years. This bothered me, big time. In late 2021 I got covid. On my back in bed I had time to think, and to watch videos. After seeing Dr. Berg, Tom DeLaur a few others, I came across you talking about carnivore. What? I decided that it was time to give keto/carnivor a try. It took about a month to ween myself off of carbs, and dealing with digestion issues, but it all faded. The weight came off, and in short order, saw my appendage again. 3 months after starting the diet, I went for hemheroid surgury (had em since my 20's). The doc, while he was there, checked my prostate. In a suprised voice he said, "your prostate is normal." I am an elder, and was told for well over decade, "this is normal for your age." It then hit me. This diet is about health, not just losing weight. For well over a decade, I had an enlarged prostate, and was having urinary issues. They're all gone now. I pee like I did decades ago. Interestingly... all my vegan friends are fat, minimally, they have a "layer." I now wish I had more energy, recovered from workouts, hard work, quicker. Now what?

I did get it, but I wonder how many of the rest of the audience did. However, I liked getting into the nitty gritty of the mechanisms and thank you both for explaining these nuances. I was already familiar with Bart Kay from years ago, long before I came across Dr. Berry. I believe they have indeed closed out the vegetarian philosophy for good. Only time I’ve ever seen it lower is at night, around bedtime…then maybe in low 90s. I’m guessing this is Adaptive Glucose Sparing and nothing to be concerned with? My fasting insulin blood test came back very low though…like 2.4, so I do feel like it’s just a physiological thing going on because of the high protein/ very low carb.

Perhaps the case for following ancestral eating choices is being overstated. As a young child I loved eating fresh juicy ripen plums on a warm summer day. I loved eating grapes and cherries. No one needed to force me to eat these fruits. I detested peas and most vegetables. I enjoyed eating meat. None of this was ideological. Processed foods are not natural. Machined oils are not natural. Overeating is a bad idea (intermittent fasting by contrast is a good idea). Carbs in small quantities are needed for good athletic performance and recovery. Respect a few basic principles, keep it simple, and enjoy good health.

Great walkthrough of the Randle Cycle from Bart. I understood this better when I looked at a cell diagram. The blue area in these 2 diagrams (one for fat flow and the other for glucose flow) are outside of the cell (so the blue is the blood stream) and the peach (CYTO) and green (MITO) are inside the cell. The problem with this Randle Cycle diagram is that everything inside a cell (the nucleus, the Mitochondrion, Lysosome, Ribosomes, and a few more thingies) are all "swimming" in a pool of the CYTO. Meaning that the the MITO is actually a thingy that floats in the CYTO along with the nucleus and all the other aforementioned thingies. The change in color to green for the MITO illustrates a Mitochondrion thingy as a different colour but may lead one to think that the MITO sits outside the CYTO but is doesnt. Clear as mud?

Well, I’ll look for that research. Sounds interesting. I’ve read that insulin spikes cross thru the umbilical cord and affect the fetus. Done often enough it is a suspect for creating T1DM. Also read research on a lack of omega 3 fats are implicated in poor fetal brain development. Both of these may be associated with autism spectrum disorders and several other disorders. So kids, once born, if they continue to eat poorly as their mother(and father) eats then it’s a matter of time until any of those disorders manifest. This is often why autism, ADHD, brain developmental functions, T1DM doesn’t show up for a few years. A side note from my own life history. T1DM was often not even diagnosed until much later years ago bcz we didn’t eat sugar loaded ultra processed foods. I had two classmates that were diagnosed with T1DM while they were in the military around 1971. We met in college in 1972. They were medically discharged bcz the military didn’t have the resources to work with that at the time. As far as T2DM goes, I can’t remember much about those folks until I myself got out of the navy in 1985. And then it was rare. Lastly, my now ex wife, had to give up garlic and brassicas when she was pregnant. Our unborn son wanted nothing to do with this stuff.

My daughter, who is now 27 an Ovo / Lacto vegetarian would gobble down veggies, and fruit, but would shake her head no, and clamp her mouth shut or spit out meat. NEVER ate it even as a baby. The rest of my 4 kids gobbled the meat down. She is the healthiest of all of the kids and the only one that doesn't have asthma. She was bottle fed, and the rest were breastfed. I don't know if that bears any weight. I'm here because #1 I respect Dr. Berg and #2 am having major autoimmune problems and need answers. I will try KETO if it helps. My mind is open. I saw a nutriotionist and she told me not to eat any fruit or anything with fructose, or sucrose or corn in it. Stay away from meat because it has hormones in it, antibiotics, and the urologist said that too because meat has purine in it and is causing your kidney stones. (I found out that I was magnesium deficient and THAT was causing the kidney stones because the body can't process calcium without magnesium.)

That's because we can make the transition of what the best fuel for a truck is compared to our body. Our bodies need more fat as fuel, like an old whale oil lamp, if you will.

Two of the most respected authorities on the Proper Human Diet. Although I do not buy into the whole Evolution view of the Professor, I do believe that a diet with very low or containing no carbohydrates is the way to go. Fat is our friend, plants are not. First clue: Antinutrients. The ruminant animal's digestive tract is perfectly designed and equipped to process the plant materials we may need, and that is what they are designed to eat. Keep up the good work, both of you. My Heroes!!!

For anyone still on the fence about the carb vs fat debate. Look at Dr Gregor's belly vs Dr Berry's belly.

Dear Dr Berry, I hope that you read my comment. As a CKD stage 3b patient I was told to follow a strict whole plant diet, no sweets, low sodium, etc which I have been doing for 4 years. I’ve read and heard in abundance that eating meat will accelerate the progression of my CKD by increasing the acidity in my body, etc. Rarely, on a special occasion, I will eat a small piece of meat (about 3oz) and on the following day I will notice foam in the urine. Lately my glucose levels have risen, my A1c is now 5.8. How can I reverse my insulin resistance when I’m told that in order to preserve kidney function I must stay on this high carb diet? Please, please address this issue in near future podcasts, I’m sure there are thousands like me, who are feeling completely hopeless and don’t know what to believe. Thank you.

Has any doctor ever explained to you the mechanism by which eating meat harms your kidneys?
@rpdigital17
@rpdigital17 2 жыл бұрын
Kidneys are harmed by oxalates and Calcium in the blood. Don't eat beans and greens! You know what I mean? Eat meat and cheese to get natural Vitamin K2, that transports Calcium to the bones, where it belongs! Drink cup of black tea in the morning, drink water for the rest of the day WHEN YOU FEEL THIRSTY! I'll take 2-4 sips of water when I feel thirsty.

Dr. Joel Wallach has claimed to get patients off kidney dialysis. If you want to see if any info from him helps you, just another option. Bart does consults and this might be that type of situation with him. Don't know if Dr. Berry does consults.

Our ancestors were more active than we are today. What I would love to know is how much fat/protein I should be eating for my lifestyle? Although I have kind of answered my own question because I have been so very full over the last few days so if I listen to my body, that should mean....go and do some physical exercise or at least, don't eat for a day or so?
