Yes, you're absolutely right. However, one of those two questions is obvious more important than the other. What matters most is who the current best marathon runner is. Bekele is famed to be the "greatest distance runner of all time," but his dominance in track pales in comparison to the dominance of Kipchoge in the marathon. Kipchoge has only lost one marathon... let that sink in.

@@trentcox5836 yes, you're right about that, but I was mostly referring to having competitors who are close to you. Even when Berkele set those amazing records, there were many other who challenged him and we're pretty close to his level. Kipchoge himself, for one, and Hicham El Guerrrouj, for another. It's just that, nowadays, no one even comes close to Kipchoge like that anymore. He has been the sole pioneer for quite some time now. Bekele has gone against tough odds and made an amazing run, but by now, Kipchoge is at least another whole minute ahead of him... the gap just stays where it is, if it isn't continuing to grow. But yes, all things considered, they have both made similar impacts on the world of running.
@AlaReDuS5 жыл бұрын
@Johannes Kokozela thank you, my good sir, and I could say the same for your points. Kipchoge did have a good track career, even though Bekele was an absolute monster in that regard (still is). What surprises me the most, like you've mentioned, is his transition to the roads. It couldn't have been timed better. I wish Bekele had done the same, but he has unfortunately had many complications and injuries... but the potential is definitely there. Sir Mo's transition actually hurt him more, it felt like, even though he's won a major marathon, he cannot hope to beat the likes of Kipchoge and Bekele.
@RandomGuy-dw7hf5 жыл бұрын
For me, Kipchoge is still the goat over the marathon, and that wouldn’t have changed even if Bekele had beaten his time. The sheer erratic nature and lack of consistency of Bekele’s career, especially in comparison with Eliud who has been flawless, with multiple DNFs and poor performances really causes him to lose out. If Kenenisa manages to string a few more good performances together and stay injury free with more consistency then I think it becomes a bit tougher to call, but the consistency Kipchoge has had in the marathon for years now gives him a huge edge in my eyes. Although Bekele is, in my opinion, overall the greatest distance runner and, perhaps, athlete of all time, Kipchoge is the greatest marathoner ever

I’m reading the comments and everyone is talking about Bekele’s kick beating Kipchoge, yes it’s remarkable but what type of kick would he really have after 26 miles at that pace? Would Kipchoge’s pure endurance outpace Bekele if they raced head to head? When it comes down to it, no one can truly predict who would win. I’m sure either of them could beat each other, it just depends on who’s in better shape at that time and who wants it more. On the other hand, nearly all pacers for Kipchoge’s INEOS159 challenge are saying he will run anywhere from 1:58 low to 1:59 mid, so it will be interesting to see how he does in this breaking 2 attempt, and even more interesting to see what he runs in his next Berlin Marathon, or head to head with Bekele. If he crushes the 2 hour barrier and maintains that shape, I’m betting on Kipchoge, based off that insane endurance, self-confidence, and maturity in running marathons. P.S. I’d love it if someone could comment and tell me what the pace car/pacers for the INEOS159 challenge will be pacing Kipchoge at. Is it right under 2 hours like the Nike Breaking2 Attempt? well, here's my 2 cents 1. kipchoge didn't have competition, but he wasn't running alone the whole way. He had the pacemakers to accompany him over half way. 2. therefore, they both drafted for a similar amount of time. After ~25km, Bekele was left behind the leaders, and was running by himself. 3. As you say, it doesn't really matter that he wasn't in the lead. He wasn't chasing the guy in front, he was chasing the pace. It wasn't that he slowed down (he even sped up a little), so much as that the 2 guys in front went at a crazy pace for the 25-30km split. 4. Once again, chasing the ghost - Bekele lifted his hand to look at the watch TOO many times just over the final 2.2km split. Avoiding that and just digging in, he could have cut those 3 seconds. 5. Another place Bekele lost time, is because of the organizers! Kipchoge was invited to break the world record, and the organizers gave him a "water boy" who was in charge of handing him the water without breaking stride. (there is a video on the official site acknowledging this). Bekele had to pick up his bottles by himself, surely costing him a few seconds. 6. edit - I take point 5 back. after a closer watch, the organizers did provide Bekele with not only just a "water boy", but in fact the same guy who handed Kipchoge his water. I don't know why the lead car drops back after 40km. Bekele had no choice either than looking at his watch from that point onward in order to know how he's doing. 7. Kip deserves credit for the marathon. He is probably the greatest marathon runner yet. I would love to see bekele train properly for 6 months and them see them head off in London In any case, in my opinion, Bekele has proved himself once again to be THE GOAT of distance running.
