Very well done informational / troubleshooting and instructional video. Enough info but not a lot of talk. Maybe earlier today.... But I am exhausted trying to troubleshoot this Kenmore elite. My Whirlpool side by side had a similar problem. However compressor would work and go through the cycle but no cooling. I tried what I could, including defrost repositioning/Reset etc and no cooling. Called a local repair person that after trouble shooting found a similar problem as you show here. He said to have changed the starter (A cubical black/gray small box like the one that is attached to your rely). Long story short and after $130, the fridge is back to service. May be I could have done it myself if have seen your video earlier.Anyhow good job and thanks for your help to others.

Recently, my 14 yo Whirlpool side-by-side fridge stopped cooling in the freezer and in the fresh food section. After unplugging the fridge, of course, I checked the compressor to see if it was clicking on. The compressor was hot to the touch but was not turning on. There was that usual clicking sound every few minutes but the compressor was not turning on. I assumed it was a faulty starter relay switch or a faulty overload capacitor. I took a chance that it was a faulty relay so I ordered an OEM Whirlpool relay switch from Amazon for $29. While waiting for the switch to arrived, I checked the cooling fan in the freezer to make sure it was working which it was. As soon as I replaced the relay switch, the clicking sound went away and the compressor started working immediately! Thank God! I just save myself $300 to $700 in repairs, not to mention, possibly getting ripped off by an unscrupulous fridge repairman.

This is the kind of troubleshooting I was expecting. My tech came out looked inside the freezer and gave me a quote of $2150 to replace the sealed system. Took longer to write the service call bill and run my credit card then he did looking at my fridge

I'm kind of an idiot, but, I bought this part off Amazon Prime delivered next day. Thank God I have a beer fridge in my garage for back up. My fridge is a Kenmore Elite (freezer on top) and every few minutes for months I heard this clicking noise as he described. Finally I had water underneath the ice in the freezer maker/tray and my fridge took a dump -- room temp and not cooling. Sears wanted $107 just for a "diagnostic" and/or to look at it. So I thought, what the heck, for $9.08 for this part -- I guess it's called a relay switch, I'd take a stab at it. There's a plug in and some green wire and a harness or whatever that he shows you to hold the thing in place. I got the new one, took pictures, of course prior cause I'm dumb and didn't want to do something wrong. Believe it or not, put it back together and it stinkin worked to my amazement. Thank God for KZbin. I now have cold beer upstairs -- lol. Oh, he says the compressor is cool to the touch, but, my was warm to the touch. Good luck all -- just trying to help. If I can do it, you can do it. Oh, one last thing, mine came with the Compressor Start Relay & Capacitor attached together so it was easy just to plug in...$9.08 for both.

I have a Whirlpool top freezer that's 13 years old. Every 2 months the evaporator core in the freezer frosts up real bad. I have to remove the cover and put a couple pots of boiling water to thaw it out. There are no other problems, just this one. I was told it could be the timer or thermostat. I believe I have a bad relay on an older Kenmore fridge. Doesn't have a fan. 9660c-042 is the relay #. Can't find the exact # online. Are there alternatives?

Great video, much appreciated! My relay switch does not rattle. Compressor comes on, but fridge & freezer stopped cooling. Year 2002 model upright fridge 18 cubic ft. No compressor fan in back either, bizarre. The capacitor tested ok with a multi meter. Did the compressor go bad? Tech said it might need freon. Could that be true or is that BS? Please shed some light on this as I am stuck. Very hard in CA to find a tech that will work on LG appliances. They flat out refuse to service LG appliances, so I am forced to DIY. I found an independent tech guy but don't know his qualifications.

Let me know if anything comes up. I have the same problem. Everything seems fine, compressor starts up and runs fine. Fans all run and seem fine. Checked all the coils, all good. Fridge and freezer not cooling at all. I was told the same, might need freon but not sure if that's the problem.

I have a 2007 Kenmore model #106.4 side by side. Works great until a door is opened then it slowly warms up (both sides). Unplugging and plugging back in fixes it until a door is opened again. The compressor constantly turns on and off. I cleaned the coil the best I could but it didn't have any effect. This frig is in a garage, mostly used for storage. Any ideas what it could be?

Hi Matt. Thank you so much for this! What happens if frig stops running properly. Freezer creates frost over bottom vents (and probably a glacier behind the entire back Panel) after a month or so and refrigerator side stops receiving the cool temps, eventually going warm. I defrost it again, plug it in, set it at a “1-2” setting the, then the freezer is below zero and frig side is perfect. It lasts for a couple of months but then repeats? It’s like Groundhogs Day. I’m not sure how to empty the water plate underneath, but eventually all water spills on the floor, everything dries up and I plug it back in, it works and then freezes up again in a month or two. I dry it up and dries up and starts all over again where it works and then frost build up stops both sides to break down again. Any suggestions? You seem very knowledgeable on this subject and I appreciated your video. There is also minor discolored, greasy or rust color stain on the floor on the right side where you are working. And if you say it’s the condenser, for the money is it even worth replacing? Thank you again!

@@Appliancevideo I appreciate your reply. I tore into my refrigerator this evening. Got the starter relay switch off. I did a continuity check on the compressor and that seems to be okay. I found the part on eBay for $10 and some change, $11.50. It looks exactly the same as the one I had on there. So when I get it works again like it's supposed to. Should there be any noise from the relay switch? I shook mine but it wasn't as prominent sounding as yours although there was some rattle to it. Should it be relatively solid with no movement? Currently I have kenmore fridge freezercombo, cold freezer no frost build up all fans are working. It doesn't not have a timer on it to reset. I believe the relay could be the issue but want to be sure .

If the freezer is working its not the relay... More likely the defrost switch is bad

Just to be clear, the one part mentioned that we need to fix this issue will fix the freezer and the refrigerator? When I opened my Freezer I noticed in the back there is a temperature control switch and I have it set to coldest and my food is still thawing out. In the refrigerator, I have that set to coldest as well and stuff is cold but its not like it should be. Just want to make sure I don't need more than one part. I searched the part of Amazon and lot of people were commenting to use the OEM part rather than the knock off because the knock off didn't last long. Do you sell the part as well?

Found that the fan motor was bad, the old:bad fan part was spinning but very slow; just wore out over time. I ordered this (12002744 Kenmore Maytag Fan Motor 12002744). Parts was slightly different, but I was able to install it, which resolved the issue. Now Fast forward to September 2018, the freezer part is thawing and not even making ice. Our fridge is an Amana model AFD2535DES. Not sure if this info will help you. I wish you the very best.
