Thank you so much for sharing this video. I knew I had a great machine...the Kenmore 158.1941 was the machine! I got it for Christmas in the late 70's and I used it for many, many years making those stretch knit clothes for my 4 kids in the 70's...remember Stretch & Sew patterns? When one of my daughters had a desire to sew, I gave it to her because I had purchased a NEW Computerized Janome DC 3050...I won't say I hate it but I'm not very happy with it. I want simple, reliable and metal! Unfortunately, my daughter left my Kenmore 158.1941 behind in one of her moves :-( My current job is sewing with industrial sewing machines; Juki walking foot, single needle and sergers. I am searching for a Kenmore replacement at this time so that I can sew spinning dresses for my granddaughters and great-granddaughters! Thanks again! I am a new subscriber. BTW I learned to sew on my mom's vintage Singer featherweight that I still have it

Your machine model was Sears attempt to sell something that could compete with Bernina. (Bernina would not sell thru Sears). The Kenmore had double belts with a transition pulley and its own special Super High Shank feet which were copies of some of Berninas Ideas. The Kenmore had Aluminum in its chassis which made it lighter. Sears was able to undercut Bernina in price.

Don't lose hope Mike. They do show up and often, the seller 'might' only know that it is a sewing related item. Also, there are sellers on sites like Ebay, Etsy, and Bonanza that disassemble machines to sell off as salvage parts.

I just got this machine from the thrift store, and I don't really understand the full workings of it. I don't have a users manual, and you seem to know lots about this model. If you could make a video doing a full walk through of how the stitches and lengths work, how to thread the machine and just an all over run down of how it works, that would be really helpful:) thanks

Thanks for sharing this. I've never used any of Kenmore's machines.

You're welcome. Some of the Kenmores were fantastic machines. This particular model was Sears attempt to copy and compete with Bernina.
Thank you for this video. I subscribed a while back and save a lot of your videos. I have this machine and although it works I think I need to have it checked out by a pro to make sure it's in the best condition possible.

Another Kenmore free-arm machine of this same quality would be the 158.1060. I don't think they are very common, I've never actually even seen one, but that would be another option.

I have one of these from my grandmother that I use all the time, and it does NOT sound like yours does. I need to get it cleaned or restored or something, but I don't know who to trust. Any recommendations in Edmonton, or suggestions on how to find someone I can trust with my machine? I also have a very vintage black server built into a little bed that I had to stop using because it was having trouble and clearly needed maintenance that I was in no position to give, and I would love to bring that to someone I could trust.

Such a great video! Can you please tell me the difference between the Model 158.1941 and 158.19412?

Both of these machines are 95 % identical to each other. The latter model might have been tweaked with a change in presser foot shank type. Sears was such a large retailer for sewing machines outside of Singer that they could offer a bewildering array of models/options that could meet customer preferences. Manufacturers/retailers often will change a model number slightly when making any changes; even if the changes are very slight. Other product categories often use the same approach.

Thank you for your helpful videos! Are all the 158 models comparable? Many of them are 158's followed by other numbers, some of them have a longer "1941" number, like 158.19412 for instance. Can you advise please? Thank you again!

Hello Lisa. Given how vast a retailer Sears once was, they offered a bewildering number of models that could meet virtually any price point. If the model # starts with 158, it was made for Sears by Marusen. The second set of numbers signifies the model and the last digits can represent production runs. Much of the differences in these models that look the same on the outside are dude to changes in features. The more features, the higher the original price was. Quality of construction was the same across the board.

One thing to look for is the presser foot shank size. The 158.19412 has a super high shank and needs a special adapter to use today's snap-on feet (actually you end up with 2 adapters.) Good news is the adapter is readily available. Other 158 models have a low shank foot and can easily use snap-on feet.
