Something I’ve noticed with white feminists is the “well-mannered, well-tempered” part makes them very judgmental of any anger in minority-led feminism. For white women, we can get success without raising our assertiveness too much. We’re still below white men but not to the point of needing to angrily prove our worth the entire time. I’ve seen many minority groups and individuals suffer from the choice between being perceived as angry by standing their ground and expressing their needs or being “well-mannered” and being kept down by racism and patriarchy working hand-in-hand.

The audience may like Veronica, but really almost everything she does throughout the movie should make us mostly dislike her.

@@Chris-rg6nm You don’t have to identify with every single story’s protagonist. That would make for a boring book/movie industry. Sometimes you have to write about people that most people can’t relate to. The audience can be watching for the story and you can find other characters to route for besides the main protagonist. And sometimes writing a bad person as a relatable or sympathetic character for the right reasons causes the audience try to justify the characters reprehensible actions. For example, Lolita.

Great point! That’s why I feel sad when most people nowdays say ”classics are a bit boring and just not for me so I don’t read them”. Classics are classics because they have undoubtedly left a mark in the history of literature. They aren’t always fun and full of rainbows and they may be slow paced at times but usually there’s a reason for it. Let it be to calm down the reader or oh I don’t know, make the story a bit more realistic. There was this movie that recently came out called “White Tiger”, about a poor Indian man who wanted to become as rich and powerful as the people he was working for. In the end he murdered his employer, became rich/successful, and had no negative consequences to his actions. What didn’t work for me in this movie was that because of this ending, it felt like the message was “do bad things and you shall be rewarded for them.” Now looking at “I Care a Lot”, I found the ending to be quite satisfying. Had Roman killed Marla it would have been quite a mundane “Men shall prevail” type of ending, and had Marla killed Roman it would have felt like a “Yeah! Girl Power! A girl can kill a powerful mafia man!” Which too, would have been a mediocre ending. By having them join forces and Marla getting shot by the man in the beginning of the movie, not only were those two previously mentioned endings avoided, but the message changed to karma/you reap what you sow, which was very satisfying for Mara’s hatable character to experience.

And in this film they didn’t do what was very good

I mean this entire movie was a caricature of negative whiteness from so many angles. Marla's white feminity used to get ahead in capitalism, Fran's ability to have strong ties to police and gather information to further incriminate others whilst being a criminal, Roman's entire human trafficking ring and his ability to buy into the grift that trapped his mother in a conservatorship, the mother taking on a false identity from a dead child but being seen as a model citizen while living this double life, the doctor needing a share in a company to share confidential patient information, and down to the man who shot Marla being a clear misogynistic asshole for the right reasons and him being threatened by the situation and murdering her. Its all a show of how the white ppl in this movie were able to so easily navigate this entire operation. Hell even the black male judge was so willing to accept everything Marla said with little interest in investigating further. It was an ok movie, I just wish the minions were a little bit more effective thats my main issue.

I feel like audiences still don't know how to deal with evil/bad white women on screen. Men tend to write them off immediately, white women usually try to turn them into heroes, which in turn can be frustrating for non-white women, and we end up with a lot of think pieces. Personally morally grey/terrible characters in the lead can be hit or miss for me. It depends on the story and the execution. I'm definitely an analysis nerd so it is sometimes fun to watch someone so complex even if they're shitty.

I'm glad they added some subtle representation in, I'm glad they didn't make it the whole focus of the film, and I think there's something to be said for the role lgbtq white women play in white feminism, but it's still kinda side-eye worthy.

@@LY-js7ff hey homie, it’s called “white feminism” cause the original feminist movement in America was created by white women who pushed POC women to the side to try and obtain rights faster. They essentially said “We deserve the right to vote because we’re white and equal to you white men, we’re not requesting anything crazy like being anti-slavery or saying black people should also vote. We want something reasonable, unlike those abolitionist people.” That’s not to say there weren’t any white feminist who were also against slavery, but the movement was literally built in a way to shove other people down to climb above them faster. It’s a really shitty past and while feminism has been reformed and made a ton better than that, some people still do something similar. Some white women shove POC voices down and push their views to the side by instead prioritizing their own without the acknowledgement of their own privilege. Women should hold each other up and try to all receive the best treatment possible, but that doesn’t always happen. A lot of the time white women have it easier and could be helping to amplify POC voices, but instead they use their privileges to climb above POC. They focus more on competing with white men in power than the improvement of women’s lives, which heckin sucks. So when white women end up being exclusionary to POC women and their issues, it slips into the traditional “white feminism”

Definitely! Not to mention Julia Robert's character learns her place in the end. Kimmy being the 'perfect girl' doesn't make her immune to imperfect circumstances, she almost had her wedding ruined, she was hurt and livid. she trusted Julianne, who knew she was thrown into being her temporary best friend and maid of honor, you can't help but feel for the both of them.

Just coming in to say that a protagonist is not necessarily a good person or a hero. It simply means "main character". An antagonist is the person who oppose the protagonist. An antagonist can be the "hero" depending on whose POV the story follows. So I guess in your example you mean either "hero" or "good guy"? It also reminds me of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend in which the protagonist is literally the "villain in her own story". It aimed to deconstruct many things which made Rebecca sympathetic and likeable (mostly using your own bias and switched between framing her actions as okay and as terrible so that you don't know whether or not you're rooting for her) so I don't think it's in the same situation as your example for criticism. You made it sound really interesting though so I'll check it out!

Honestly as a lesbian I don’t like that she’s in a lesbian relationship because I definitely feel that there is a big stereotype that lesbians are just man hating white feminist girl boss types. We’re also often considered much more manly in action. I think it would’ve been better if she was straight because it would keep her narrative focused on white feminism. I feel that it takes away from the criticism of white feminism when it’s mixed up with it also being a negative stereotypical portrayal of a lesbian. I definitely think some people could come out of it with a subconscious message that her sexuality has something to do with how she acts rather then it just being white feminism. I’m not very good at wording this sorry but I hope this makes sense?
@madeleineherrick17933 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I think that Marla's character being gay detracted from the satirical exploration of white feminism because women's sexuality is a whole other element of gender politics, so just throwing it in there muddled the message. It would be one thing if she was just shown to be a lesbian in passing, but the film routinely has scenes of them being a couple. And no matter how sincere the relationship seems to be, they are still intentionally written to be terrible people who steal money from the elderly. The audience is supposed to be disgusted by them, and I think it's really hard in this case to separate their villainy from their sexuality because these are the only two aspects of their characters. Also, there is already the issue that fictional villains are very commonly queer-coded. The decision to write an explicitly gay villain, when there is no counter-balancing positive representation in the film and good media representation of lesbians is so rare as it is, is in poor taste.

I do feel some of the hate this is getting is a gender thing. I don’t think it’s a “good” movie in the least bit. It’s unrelenting “wink-wink” tone can be annoying. It lacks nuance. It isn’t particularly clever or tension filled. Its characterization isn’t all that good. And it doesn’t feel entirely confident with what it’s going for and not in a purposely “ambiguous” way. But you’re right, it’s not “bad” or at least it isn’t much worse than a lot of movies made in its vein with male leads. It does seem a percentage of audiences just love being hyper-critical of and aggressively sh*tting on movies with unlikable female leads, while often glossing over the problems in movies with aggressively unlikable male protagonists. (Yeah, I made it a gender thing). Also, a lot of “regular people” don’t get satire or parody unless it’s extreme and over-the-top. I’m not a fan of the movie, but I wouldn’t be mad if Ms Pike got an Oscar nod. While the aggressive attacks it’s received just feels uncalled for and don’t seem as if they’d be as widespread, angry and condescending if it had a male lead.

A gender thing, for sure. Anna, atomic blonde, and other action films have trashy reviews, even if the only difference in those is the leads were women. The lead for ANNA was very great, and the story is awesome, but m3n kept on commenting that she can't beat up men with her size (even though Russian women can have a size like her and become a spy/military). Same with Atomic Blonde, but she def has more muscle than ANNA. But if those were men, even though how skinny they are, it wouldn't be questionable. No matter how boring the fucking plot is.

@@TenYen The difference being that American Psycho had great writing, both as a novel and as a film that put a new perspective on the original text. If anything, Rosamund Pike does her best to transcend the shoddy writing she is constricted to (and for that, she deserves credit). It all feels like nobody knew what the movie should be, and that extends to the messages the movie sends. Is it advocating for the "girlboss" or is it criticizing her? And is it really more clever to lay it all out in the open and let us make the conclusions? It's all very alibistic and toothless and it could really have been so much more - in fact, it could play up the b-movie quality to great effect. And that would bring me to Showgirls... For instance the Main Character loves the very positive philosophy of feminism, yet, she uses it as an excuse to justify her narcissistic actions, similarly the mobster is...a goddamn mobster, yet he genuinely loves his mother and would and has, quite literally kill for his Mom...a trait that some view as honourable, similar moral complexity applies to every other as well, it also does a great job of critiquing the dark underbellies of Big-Business. All that, in just one movie, can only be achieved through skillful technical writing, that deserves high praise. I've seen people's negative comments saying, "It had too much politics!", Or "It was so Unrealistic!", or that "It's nothing like that Gone Girl movie!, Or "It's confusing and it's theme isn't clear!" People, calm down...Chill! Firstly, of course it's nothing like Gone Girl! This is a whole new movie from a different Film Company, Different Directors, Different Writers, etc. It's not linked to Gone Girl, yet, I suppose just because the same actor that played he main character in "Gone Girl", also played the main Character in "I Care A Lot", then somehow they need to Constantly be compared to one another as movies, which is silly, because It's like saying that since two different houses both have the same colour paint on them, then one of those houses should change it's design to be more similar to the other, otherwise it'll be bad. In terms politics, the only political things are like two scenes where the main character brags about being a Feminist, and It's critiques on Shady Business, also in the case of this movie, it's written in a way that knowing the main characters' political ideology actually helps to sell her hypocritical nature in the story, unfortunately however, some people feel way too threatened when they see things that are outside their echo-chamber of Ideologies in media, to the point where it becomes quite Irrational. On the "unrealistic-ness", I think people forgot that this movie is a Dark Comedy, so by nature some scenes are gonna be exaggerated for humour, and as I'll elaborate in my next paragraphs, is arguably one of the most wrong critiques of this movie. On the film "being confusing", well, It's theme is unclear, because it's theme is not supposed to be clear. In the end, you gotta remember that in life, right here in reality, there exists Good Villains and Terrible Heroes, Ugly Saints and Beautiful Sinners... in face of all that things gets muddy, and the movie "I Care Alot", is full of exactly that, and that, I feel, is exactly why so many people got annoyed by this Film. It's because, Facing a reality that life is full of alot of moral grey areas can be a genuinely frustrating thing to confront, but in doing so, I think we can broaden our view on life.

I feel like the coin that white patriarchy and white feminism share is the dangerous sides of masculinity and femininity. I don't know who first thought that femininity is inherently weak, because it most certainly isn't, and that masculinity is stronger…cause it isn't. I find that it's representative of the same pattern where bullies who are the boys, and then bullies who are the girls. Obviously case-by-case, but boys usually take on the masculine approach and _outwardly_ bully through slurs, insults and violence, whereas girls are usually manipulative, passive-aggressive and are the ring-leaders of their cliques. Then there's how men and women abuse career fields; corrupted cops are largely men, and corrupted nurses are largely women. Then there's the murderers. Men usually are more violent, and notable woman serial killers were those who used poison and/or hired help. Again, case-by-case. Take things with a grain of salt, blah. Point is, bad masculinity bad. Bad femininity bad. Bad is bad. Goodnight.

As someone who watched this right after Framing Britney Spears, the fact that this is legal and that it’s effectively impossible to get out of legal guardianship as an adult (because, from what I’ve seen, any objection to said guardianship is seen by the courts as the ward needing continued guardianship even when it is in fact not needed.) this was terrifying. Den of Geek did a review of sorts and linked to a NYT article about conservatorship and how much of a mess it is and how much of a lack of oversight there is. So this movie severely pissed me off, and it did it’s job. I need to see some changes in this system because of how easy it is to exploit it.

I guess that the reason for people criticize this movie in the LGBTQ+ angle was because the lesbian character was a villain and was killed. While it's true that her being a lesbian had nothing to do with her being evil or the reason she was killed. But LGBTQ+ characters were often written as villains and/or get killed, at a much larger percentage than the straight counterparts. And often time, they were the only one or two character in that particular story. Is this a valid criticism for this movie? I don't know.

This movie wasn’t that bad or that good it was just kinda corny. When I first watched it I actually didn’t see much commentary about white feminism or just feminism being made outside of the scene right after the first hearing, so it was interesting to listen to kennies thoughts. The main message I got from the movie was actually that we NEED to watch out for are elders more and make sure to take care of are parents. I think a lot of people don’t think much about what’s going to happen to their parents when they get so old they can’t take care of themselves anymore. I think most people just assume they’re going to put their parents in a home and they’ll be fine. This movie seemed to point out that you really have to watch out for your parents even if you do decide to put them in a home because anyone in the system could take advantage of them.

Thank you. This whole comment section is low key pissing me off. Outside of sexist double standards people should dislike her because she is a trash evil person. With Jennifer we don't really know how involved with her son's life but watching her just sell everything Jennifer worked for and medicating her into a premature grave had me hot. From a working class perspective it was deeply disturbing. Ownership is important to "poor" people too. If the feminist lens is the only one a viewer wants to take then just look at the elderly women who Marla was fucking over. If they were boomers then those assets took a lot more effort to obtain due to wage gaps, discrimination at work and gender based hiring being a lot more acceptable when those women were young.The film really wasn't as smart as it thought it was to be honest. The pacing was also questionable.

@hillaryoi89463 жыл бұрын
@Bella Rose Yeah no. Marla happened to be white because female leads are almost always white. The fact that the feminism displayed embodied the limitations of white feminism is the CRITIQUE. You can't discuss privilege without acknowledging oppression. You can't say the film is about a white women leveraging her position in society without showing how it effects non white women. So yeah the film makers did not care/show about how Marla's whiteness assisted her is scamming and to say that the lack of discussion about race just highlights that pov is such a reach. The film makers just didn't think of that perspective which is why Kenny said the way her skin shielded Marla stood out to her. It was an oversight.

Its interesting Kennie, because when you mentioned the male capitalistic opponent being a person with dwarfism. The first thing I thought the director was maybe challenging the audience and the female mair character of the movie. That in this society often people would see dwarfism as something that "made him less masculine/of a man," but the very point that the director hired him in this particular role was to challenge the audience on their inner ableist and to make the point that even still, her knowing all the struggles he would have been through, the female main character still wanted to win against him, to overtake him. Showing that EVEN SHE possessed no sympathy, even she would overtake him at moments noticed, adding to her unlikeable nature.

Great critique of this film! We need more "unlikable" female characters, tbh. Also white femininity can be a bit more dangerous than white patriarchy because white femininity can be used in a lot of different spaces and environments than white patriarchy. White femininity tends to lean on perceived innocence and white female fragility which can be used in interpersonal relationships, work places etc. White femininity can be and has been weaponized and used against POC, WOC and especially black women. For example, you ever had a white female co-worker start crying when you told her she did something wrong or offended you? That's that good ole' white female fragility.

The thing about her being a lesbian is that it’s a theme in movies about evil women that men write. There’s this trope that like “only a woman who has no interest in getting male attention would be so cruel” or like “she hates men [because straight dudes think that’s what being gay is] so that’s why she’s so mean to these poor men.” It’s just really frustrating when men write a an evil (or sometimes not even evil, just self assured) female character and then also make her gay.

Ok, I totally agree to being concerned about this, but (hear me out) maybe watch the movie first. It never pretended to be a lesbian love story, it's about this con-woman who steals money from old people and her partner, lover or whatevs happens to be a woman. Like, the main focus isn't about her sexuality at all, the movie only shows how they comfort each other when they get in trouble and their love is never put into question, and I personally think it's great to have casual representation sometimes, rather than always putting the main character's love life as the only storyline. to follow. I do agree with you that there is a lack of lesbian couples just thriving in movies, but I still think this movie was just trying to paint a woman unhinged, it wasn't focusing on her personal life, rather on her obsession with getting power however she can. Still, I also want a sapphic cute couple like LJ and Peter in to all the boys... someday...

Okay..this film is not a satire and its not bad because people don't like her.. This movie is an attempt at a commentary about white woman privilege that is subverted by its own bad filmmaking. The tone is confused between a comedy and a thriller. The acting is lazy and caricatured. It's not about her lacking likeability. You don't need likeability to make a good film. There's several films that don't do that, but are good. Anything in the Tarantino catalog for instance. The problem is in the film's disregard for reality-based human interaction and behavior. Marla was tied to a chair in the desert and her response to that was nothing but quips and smart aleckness. She shows no vulnerability at any point. Rosamund Pike's face doesn't move even when she's in water.. You may get away with showing invulnerability if you're like the 3rd henchman in a B crime movie. As the main character, you're just not doing your job. You say it's good they gave her no backstory or "why" because it would humanize her...no that would just make her like a 3 dimensional character...I mean the Hallmark movies you review have that. It's just elements of a good story.

You’re right. I hate comparisons but you know which movie lists itself as comedy thriller and was a commentary on capitalism... parasite. It’s lacking. That’s just it. Also it’s so frustrating that white women can feel so fucking entitled (but maybe this was the movies point?) that they think they can just jump into organised crime like it’s that easy. Like what’s her name from good girls, she pissed me off too, but I did enjoy the series! Same thing. Used her white feminists to get away with crimes because she thought it may be fun lol. I do NOT think she was written well. I can see how people might think that, for sure, especially with the great acting choices. But i didn’t particularly like how she was written. Hmmm...I wouldn’t use Tarantino as an example. He frequently uses the morally ambiguous anti hero in his movies for protagonist. That’s different than having an unlikeable protagonist. And the movie isn’t perfect, but it wasn’t as bad as people made it out to be. And yea, I do think that giving her a backstory would make her a more dimensional character, but I think kennie’s point was that people were saying a lack of back story made her a villain....she’s supposed to be the villain. She’s not supposed to be humanized in that way. But I can see how the writing or directing maybe missed the mark they were trying to hit. Again, the movie definitely has its criticisms, but it wasn’t as terrible as people made it seem. That’s just me.
