I remember when I found I would be a dad. I thought the same as this song. 19 years old with no job or place to even call home. Now I'm 23 professional firefighter my own place two brand new cars married and my baby girl is my world! Everyone tells me not to spoil her but that's hard to do bc she saved my life more than she will ever know. To every young man or young woman out here in this crazy world take your children as a blessing. Never give up on them bc they will never give up on you. After 4 years of being with my wife that's still our only child even after taking meds to have another. I just take it as a sign from the good lord that he sent us our baby girl to help get ourselves on track. Don't ever take your children as a mistake they don't deserve that.

I was 16, working a shitty job, and was in no shape to be a dad. I was scared. I walked away. I never should have. My child never made it into this world, and I still talk to the girl. Now looking back, I’m now 19 years old, a United States Marine, and I just wish I never would have walked away. Growing up needs to happen and maybe I should have grown the hell up faster. I hate myself for what I did. My parents still don’t know about it because I was too scared to say anything. I can’t change the past. But only I have control over the future. 2023 and this song still makes an impact. It made a marine cry.

I also love the irony of his “plans” of moving to the coast, until she happened. What became his life will now get to go live his original plans. That is such a vital detail of this so well written song. A man like me could cry about it over and over. We sacrifice our own dreams to make sure they get to live theirs. Especially when it just so happens to be the same dream. Just makes it that much sweeter.

As a daughter who did the same and have been gone 12 years now, I wish I could do it over. I don’t know that I’d leave to be honest. I moved away with my husband and our kids when I was 29 for my husband’s work. It was worth it financially for sure but the separation of relationships has hit hard the last 2 years. I’m 42 now and my parents are getting old. My dad is very sick and will be gone before I make it back home to live in 3 years. Looking back, I’m just not so sure money was worth it. I definitely have to get back before I lose too much more time with my mom(parents are divorced)but it’s too late to get back in time for dad. He was a jerk at times but he was so young when they had me and he did at least stick around. He did better than many other dads do and I feel like I’ve abandoned him out taking care of my kids and living my own life. Idk how old you are or what your situation is but just think king and hard about whether it’s worth it to miss out on time spent with your parents. Good luck to you!

Thank you Khaled...you are a sweet soul.... I too love Country Music...Country songs have a way of telling "our" stories & speaking for us when we can't seem to find the words. All music has the potential to touch the soul if we let it but country music touches the heart AND soul. The Zach Brown Band has a song out titled "My Old Man" & let me tell ya it tuggs at the heart strings. It even brought tears to Jimmy Fallon's eye's. If y'all haven't heard it yet you should pull it up & do so. I suggest you have plenty of tissues near by.😢 Y'all isn't it something that we as strangers can sit & converse with each other like this? Like I've said before we are all from different parts of the world yet we can sit and discuss music, life or whatever we want to discuss. I know for me it kind of makes me feel as if I'm getting to travel the world & meet new people after all. God Bless.

I have a daughter that lives in NY and I haven’t seen her since she was 3-4 and she’s a teen now. I think about her everyday. Wish things didn’t happen they way they did with her. I almost died. I have a 5 yr old little girl that I have the best relationship with and am extremely grateful for God giving me a second chance at life. I almost lost my life until she came along. I’m a good Daddy. I didn’t deserve losing the 1st child like I did. I will always love you Olivia. I pray God beings us back together one day full circle and I can tell you how sorry I am that I gave up the fight.

I can relate to what your feeling, went thru the same thing, lost touch with my son when he was five, but he found me after 20 years. One day (perhaps) she will come looking for you. thats great you get another chance, I know that this second chance will not replace Olivia. We all make mistakes that we at times regret, keep the faith that one day she will come to you with questions.

I feel like this song was written about my husband and I. Pregnant 2 months out of high school and all of our plans were changed. She has her daddy's blue eyes and had bouncing curls when she was little. We married when she was 2 and this past Saturday she danced with her daddy to this song at her wedding. I cried like a baby watching them!!

Wow .. Such a very special time in life ! You will forever have a special bond . My mother had me when she was 15 , We ( I ) grew up with so many challenges that my other friends could never understand . My Mom was my 1st introduction to so many things in life ( not all positive ) the closeness in age made it all relatable , But those challenge’s did exist . I find myself trying to understand more now than ever . I lost my Mom suddenly & unexpected to metastasis melanoma last year . I never thought We’d be apart , ever . She was just 34 💔 She was my Best friend .

I can relate to this song just like you all. As a Mother watching her kids grow up leaving one by one & wishing them the BEST in life. It's hard. My 2 oldest children lost their father going into their teenage years due to cancer. He was only 35 yrs old & God took him. I knew I had a HARD road ahead of me. Their Father wouldn't be there for the mile stones in their lives. It's up to ME their Mother. Stepping up to the plate I taught my kids Life owes you NOTHING & if you want something in Life then work hard for it & NEVER take NO as an answer. All this time later-15 yrs I am SO proud of my kids. The wisdom we put into them has paid off. Your children are apart of you-THE BEST PART OF YOU !!! God Bless !!!

I didn't want to be a dad. enlisted in the navy and had so many plans. but there she was. my little girl. I ended up getting out and raising that little girl. in July she flew off to Paris island south Carolina for boot camp. and after three very long hard months I get my hug. this has been our song since the first time I heard it. all I want is my hug. in the last letter she wrote, that's all she wants too. I love that little girl. she's my heart. here's an update. yesterday I saw my girl graduate from boot camp. she is now a u.s. marine. I got my hug. and it was the best god damn hug of my life. we both cried. and today we are headed home for her 10 days of leave. as hard as it was waiting for those 3 months, it was worth every second to see who she has become. a stronger, more confident, and tougher version of who she was.

My dad always has said this was his song to me, since it came out. He and my mom had me when she was 16 and he was 15. We grew up together. I turn 30 in a couple months and it's crazy to think that when my dad was my age I was on the way to getting my driver license. I have a 2 year old girl and 1 year old little boy. My fiance, their father passed away this last June on the 25th and now I'm doing this alone. This song always makes me think of my dad. I also think of my daughter and it breaks my heart that she can't have her daddy. That neither of them can. I can relate to most situations that most anyone is going through. I've been through a lot. Except this. I still have my dad. He's still alive. We have never missed a beat. Full circle playing this today with my 2 Littles in the back seat, and mama up here crying like a damn mess lmao. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Xo

I love how the title of this song beings on 2 different meanings as the song progresses. Brings a tear to my eyes. "There goes my life" in the first part refers to his future career. "There goes my life and my future" refers to the fact that his life is now his new beautiful daughter, and the future he will have, raising her, alongside his wife. Such a beautiful song

Well I danced with her to this song at my wedding when we she was just 3yrs old. my baby is my true to life angel. I made a decision and I have now been working for the Federal Government for 21 years, I got clean from drugs and don’t even drink anymore. I just sent my daughter off to college and I cried the entire 3 hours home. She saved my life and I owe her mine. I may not be able to hold her hand anymore, but she’ll forever hold my heart in hers. The best thing I love about this song is the story it tells, how something we consider our greatest misfortune can become our greatest gift. We are so used to the ugliness involving teenage pregnancy, we just give up trying and make the worst decision of destroying an innocent life or just embrace out of sight, out-of-mind attitude, just abandoning them. But this song reminds us that not every story has to end like that.
