It is such a sad song. Too many came back from Vietnam with broken bodies and minds. Your reaction was so spot on, and compassionate. It was a big hit, and on the radio all the time back then

It's odd. the older I get , a lot of these songs that I've listened to many many times over the decades are starting to affect me differently, I've always understood what the story is about in this song (written by country music great, M-m-m-m-mel Tillis). But lately, the sadness of the man's situation in this song brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to it.

When Kenny Rogers spun off from the New Christy Minstrels to form up The First Edition, he was able to venture into some of the genres he wanted to explore. They had many, many great songs. This was one. When I first heard this cover in the '60s, I was amazed by the cadence of rhythm. Just a wonderful song. And the best thing of all, these cats could play. Kenny Rogers was a very good bassist, and watching live performances of the First Edition is worth a search.

For something from Kenny and the 1st Edition with more of a rock sound, and lyrics a bit more celebratory of lust in nature, check out the song called Something's Burning.

The drummer on this, Mickey Jones, lived down the street from my in the mid-70's. Nice guy! (He was also an actor you'd recognize in some good films from those days.)

The band IMMINENCE with one of these songs or all the songs. These are new songs that don’t have a music video to them. 🎤🎻🎸🥁 These are visualizers for the new album “The Black.” All of these songs are amazing…. 1. “Beyond the Pale” 2. “The Call of the Void” 3. “Come What May” 4. “The Black”

Great reaction Shawn! Appreciate learning something on almost every video of yours that I see. No reactor that I watch takes the time to dive into a song and band like you do, and obviously I'm too lazy to look it up also. Appreciate you, brother ✌

The First Edition had 7 top 40 hits, that should had been bigger hits. But it was the late '60s. Competition was hot! They had their own TV show that lasted 2 seasons. I remember lead guitarist Terry Williams reminded me a lot of Tommy Smothers. They had some pretty heavy hitters as guests, Badfinger, Bill Withers, Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Everly Brothers, Ike and Tina Turner, Gladys Knight and the Pipps, John Kay (Steppenwolf), Edgar Winter....

This was released during the Vietnam war in the 60s, but it could be about any war. The crippled-up soldier returns home, only to find his wife or girlfriend has been cheating on him and continues to do so because he is no longer able to perform his husbandly duties. Very sad song. This is more common than you might think.

He heard them talking that he won't be around much longer. 😢😢 thinking why can't she wait till he's gone. Mel Tilis was a country artist. He stuttered, but when he rang it would go away. Sometimes when doing an interview he would sing his response because of the stuttering. ❤

Kenny Rogers & The First Edition were mostly made up of former members of the "New Christy Minstrels". They covered country rock, pop & psychedelic rock. They had a lot of hits in the 60's-70's such as "Something's Burning", "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)", "But You Know I Love You", "Reuben James" etc. Kenny left in the mid 70's to pursue his solo career.

Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" by Mel Tillis doesn't explicitly mention the Vietnam War in its lyrics, but some have assumed that it's about a veteran of that war due to a line about a "crazy Asian war" and the song's release date. However, Tillis has said that the song is actually about a World War II veteran.
