We used to call this song Chupeeka. My dad had a landscaping business. Me and my brothers used to work for him. There was a Mexican that knew this song and he would call it the Chupeeka song. When he sung it he would say "Chupeeka fine Time to Leave Me Lucille" so it was a running joke for a long time.

The story behind this song is that Hal Bynum, one of the songwriters, was in the Country Palace bar, which was across the street from the old Greyhound bus station in Toledo. Thus, the "bar in Toledo, across from the depot." While waiting in the bar for his bus to depart, Mr. Bynum heard a man and a woman arguing. During the argument, the man said, "You picked a fine time to leave me!" Mr. Bynum wrote that line down on a napkin. Later, he and another man composed the whole song, based on the line he wrote on the napkin. Good song to begin with. Kenny Rogers did an outstanding job performing it. The old bus station is now torn down, as Greyhound busses now stop at the Amtrak station in Toledo. The bar building is still standing, but I think it is abandoned. The buildings were on Jefferson Street in Toledo.

His mom's name was Lucille, and she thought he wrote that song painting her in a bad light. Even though she NEVER left her hubby. The song was written by someone else. AND Kenny was 1 of 8 kids, not 4. He has an autobiography out "Luck Or Something Like It." good read, and the audiobook of it has a narrator with a good voice reading it. I really would like to see a reaction video done by you (or by many different people because I have only recently discovered the videos and LOVE seeing many different people react to the same songs) But Kenny has one that nobody had=s done that I think would be cool. "While The Feelings Good" by Kenny. Really pretty much any song by Kenny is great. The man could really spin a yarn to music.

I LOVED the ending because when it came down to it, he couldn't "hold" Lucille because he was remembering the things her husband had said to her and the way she had made her husband look small. He probably also was remembering those four little hungry children. It says he didn't go through with it. He says, "She was a beauty but when she came to me, she must have thought I'd lost my mind, I couldn't hold her, the words that he told her, kept coming back time after time." So in my mind that's a great ending. He ends up walking away from Lucille and if she cheats on her husband, she'll have to find someone else to cheat with. Of course, she DID walk out on her husband, and she heartlessly left her four little children behind, but she didn't accomplish all she set out to accomplish.

I don't know about this specific song but, song lyrics don't need to be real live accounts. Most of the time they didn't really happen like in the song itself. Mostly they got real events in them and if so, the rest is made up. They just tell a story to prove a point, to give a message... made up or not. It can be a made up story that really tells something important as well as a real live account. It just needs some moral, that's all.
@zodinthara79253 жыл бұрын
No, you dont get the essence of the song. She left him not just to cheat, listen carefully. The Lady left the man for good because she could no longer cope with poverty and hardwork. These country folks married young,usually high school sweetheart and all but stays faihtfull till death. Life is tough , specialling during the harvest season. But they just dont quit on their partners and go looking for a guy more richer than their husband, or someone in the block who wears gold chain and a big SUV and buy them diamonds. They jusy dont do that. They live by the oath they made in front of God. And divorce are a rarity. So the song tells about Lucille, an exception and scandalous in the country. And Lucille picked that time to leave his man, whom he promised support and love in times of good health or in sickness in the church and these folks always stick by that. The concept of the song is lost to the t city people, especially black ( not intended to sound racist, but official facts) as single mothers, father left early etc are part of everyday life in the city. Nah, country takes marriage seriously. So, the man she hits on just cant get the good man she left and the situation at his home out of his mind. So just cant waltz along with Lucille. Because of respect a hard man has for other hard man. The city black folks just cant get the deep conotation and principles the country people live by. So the reaction is way too....casual as Absent fathers, abortion, etc are the norms of the day for them. I doubt she , the host, pays the song enough respect that worths. It
