After the surgery, he would have to learn (essentially) a new muscle memory to breathe through his nose while eating. He hadn't been able to for years. That takes time.

I was in a car accident 26yrs ago which mangled my face, caused paralysis, broke every bone in my body. After 15yrs my nose completely collapsed because they did nothing to save my nose because they were more concerned about saving my life. 26yrs later I finally found a surgeon that would take on the task of fixing my nose. My nose was so mess up that it took 9hrs in surgery to fix it. I will need a revision eventually which suck. It was a brutal surgery
