Today we continue looking at a recent Whack an Atheist Wednesday from Kent Hovind, starring Matt Powell. I’ve never been more quickly disappointed than when I thought Hovind was about to share a source and actually produced his own PowerPoint presentation.

"Do your own research." Little do they realize that 'doing research' is what leads most people to being atheist. It's what actually helped me. The more I tried proving the world view I was raised with to be true - the more evidence I found proving the opposite. This is why most religions don't truly want any of It's members to get educated or be exposed to other ways of thinking. Knowledge is power. The higher church leaders know that the more knowledgeable people get - the less powerful they will be.

The story of Dr Mary Schweitzer gets even better when you learn that she was a young earth creationist who pursued her PhD in an attempt to prove the planet's youthfulness. She accepted the reality of the earth's age when she studied the evidence in depth. I, myself, used to follow hovinds teachings and my greatest crisis of faith was when I realized how much of what he said was a lie. I am still a Christian (don't judge) but I have utterly rejected the idea that genesis was anything other than a figurative myth (a view shared by most of history).

Sean, please go read Francesca starvakopoulou's new book "God, an anatomy " its a wonderful read . It really puts middle Eastern religions into perspective. How they're all related to each other, what these ancient peoples believed and why . How somebody can be religious in this day and age I'll never understand, but that doesn't mean I don't respect these ancient people, the stories are amazing. In a time when humans had no idea how the world really work and no real way to investigate. These stories were their best attempt . It's ashame that these stories that got handed down became politicised into religion

@@thatfinnishkrista You're joking, but in my country there was a class/subject when I was in school essentially called Citizenship. Then it was removed because no one ever bothered making proper curriculums for it year after year. A few years ago it was reintroduced, with a proper curriculum, that included, amongst other topics: sexual education/health; gender equality; how to be a respectable person and not an asshole. This one man, refused to have his sons attend this class - it was NOT optional - and eventually his sons flunked and will have to take that grade again. I fonte believe it was JUST because of that class, but it definitely counted towards it. And he's STILL all up in arms, as if it's not his fault. And he all but literally says that what the class teaches is "indocrination", because he doesn't like it, and everything he doesn't like/agree with is indocrination. Edit: I looked it up, they literally offered to let the kids off with just writing a paper to pass the class, no attendance necessary, and the dude doubled down and refused.

The issue here is they believe the Bible, as the word of their god, cannot be corrupted and is thus 100% accurate. How do they know? Because Bible told them so. It's a lovely tautology (circular argument) that allows them to dismiss scientific papers that disprove their theories while at the same time giving them a perfect document to reference as needed. The thing is, we know for a fact that the holy words of the Bible have been translated from language to language and we can find specific examples of changes made from version to version. Some might be minor and basically inconsequential, but others can really shift the core meaning of a particular section. Basing your entire faith on something with such a shaky foundation isn't ideal, especially when they have other amazing scientific discoveries they could be trying to co-op to justify the existence of their god. Final point: there really is no reason to take the Bible literally. The original founder, Mr. Christ, told lots of parables. These short stories were used to answer questions and outline some core concepts in Christianity. Some good examples might be "The return of the prodigal son", "the lost coin" and "The mustard seed." IN all cases, J.C. is using a story to illustrate a point and they're not meant to be taken literally.

Romans 1:16-25 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Kent hovind is one of the most infuriatingly dishonest individuals ive ever witnessed. He needs to be called out a lot more for the fact that he never actually responds to the points being made, and instead cuts out all the most important parts of his opponents arguments and responds to a snippet of them before they actually make their point. This makes me angrier than most anything else these two do.

I mean not really... he doesn't need to be called out on anything; young Earth creationism cults aren't very dangerous to anyone but themselves. I downloaded Kent's "dissertation" on "Christian Education" and even a superficial and quick skim through of his 102 page diatribe yielded multiple instances of capitalization, spelling and grammatical errors. These started on his "Dedication page" and got progressively more numerous the further I read. He makes many references to "epics of time", which I translated to a more context friendly "epochs of time" to rationalize his sentence structure which is rather chopped up and in general horrific throughout his "thesis". His "Doctor of Philosophy" boils down to the delusional and sometimes borderline demented ravings of your typical young earth creationist. I won't even touch on his many logic faults during his rant against evolution. Of note was his assertion that Evolution is the Root Cause of Communism. I have heard Evolution called many things before but this was a first for me. Clearly nobody ever proof read his "project/thesis" or else a lot of these things would have been corrected. Perhaps Kent proof read his own divinely inspired work? He should have repeated Grade 5 a few more times to get a better understanding and working knowledge of English, or did he master 'Merican? Emma, you have your work cut out for you if you are going to debunk his "thesis". Almost every sentence is cringe worthy.

To your statement about these people being so committed to the ideological trench they've dug themselves into... I had a Christian friend many years ago who would often engage me in conversation hoping to "enlighten me" and bring me into Christianity. During one of many such conversations, I genuinely asked "if I had the power to do anything at all, to produce any physical object or phenomenon whatsoever on a whim, is there anything I could ever show you that would make you question whether you've been wrong all this time?" My heart sank when she said "there is nothing you could ever do, say, or show me that would make me question my faith for even a second." I sadly had to inform her that I couldn't be friends with someone so disconnected from reality that they would knowingly refuse to accept irrefutable evidence of something just because they didn't didn't like what it might mean for them spiritually. Anyone so oblivious to the real world is, so far as I'm concerned, dangerously unpredictable/unstable and is best avoided.

Don't cut it at all. It's long but great. Just a few things. As the child of two retired college professors with PHDs, and 3 siblings that have advanced degrees, it infuriates me when people like Dr. Dino act like they're educated and present crap dissertations as "proof". Dissertations must be fairly long, have title pages, bibliographies, chapters that are concise, nearly perfect grammar and spelling, source notes, indexes, credits, and more. Dr. Dino has none of these, NONE.I’ve read my mother’s dissertation, which was very very long. I’m talking hundreds of pages. Dr. Dino has between 3-5 PHDs, or is working on more. He also talks about getting more. Every one of these degrees, if they exist, are from unaccredited diploma mills. He says that he's attended college, but these "colleges" are all in double wide trailers that couldn't hold 20 students. He's such a charlatan. Watch the way that they always watch videos that they try and fail to debunk. They never just play a video and do a voice over. This is because, at least in the case of Dr. Dino, he's a toxic narcissist. He has to watch his own videos so he can be seen with his exaggerated gestures, and facial expressions. He has to be seen 24/7 since he can't stand whenever he's not on screen. Look at some of his "debates". He whines and complains about not getting "equal time", but he constantly, incessantly, interrupts, talks over, and just contradicts everything "his enemies" say. He can't let anyone get a good point across because he knows he's full of crap. Kent can't handle a bleeping slide projector. Aron Ra has an amazing series on Dr. Dino. One of Aron Ra’s videos shows Dr. Dino struggling with a slide show. We’re talking about a rotary slide projector that uses actual slides. My 11 year old God-Son can work a computer well. The fact that this “Dr” who has so many PHD can’t run simple slide projector is hilarious. He never ever actually shows his “proofs”, he just blabbers on and on about God did it. He’s trying to perfect the “God of the Gaps”

I love how Kent inadvertently destroyed his own point by accepting that tectonic activity forms mountains Because one of the massive pieces of evidence for that is how fossils were found in places that they really shouldn't have been in (like, fish-in-the-mountains kind of thing) due to tectonic activity slowly moving the fossils over time But since tectonic plates move at a whopping, phenomenal, neck-breaking pace of anywhere between 1 and 7cm per year, this process would take millions of years that sort of blows the whole '6000 years' thing to hell, using something that he has smugly explained and accepted as true, so he can't even use the 'the science is inaccurate' card

Hovind and Powell slip the conflation of evolution with every other branch of science into their banter so often that it doesn't even seem surprising anymore, but it still slays me every time I hear his group abuse the term. I've been thinking lately what analogy would be the best fit for this annoying habit. So, in speaking of religion, and Christian creationism in particular, you refer to its adherents as practitioners of Confucianism which is Zoroastrianism, which is Mormonism, which is Rastafari, which is Hellenism, which is Buddhism, etc. . . and that, of course, makes Kent Hovind a Wiccan high priestess and Mr. Powell his acolyte. I still think this analogy could use some refining, but I think it comes close to accurately describing the way in which they use "evolution" or "evolutionist" I mean, what exactly does the theory of evolution have to do with the formation of mountains ?!
@RichWoods23

They think of it as geological evolution. They have everything falling into six groups, starting with stellar evolution and ending up with biological evolution. They've slapped the word evolution onto every scientific concept they disagree with in order to make it easier for their followers to identify what they should dismiss out of hand so that it doesn't threaten their faith. Basically, nothing is allowed to change unless it changes with a click of their god's Infinity-Gauntleted fingers.

For 15 years or so, Kent Hovind has been publicly promoting the following claim: “Structuring requires 2 or more transactions of $10,000.00 or less, on the same day, that total more than $10,000.00." That's false. I have an outstanding challenge for Kent regarding that fundamental matter. To my knowledge, despite my efforts, neither Kent nor any of his people have ever presented a legitimate legal reference in defense of Kent's claim. .

oh Kent, you're arguing against Matt again. Correct, Mountains are still forming, plate tectonics is still happening. That is contradictory to Matt's description, which boils down to "wet ground was bent by the flood and then solidified into the shape we see now." You're siding with Dan, against Matt. How do you not see this?

I love that Hovind and Powell always throw shade at the carbon dating, but they use it when it sort of suits them.

Kent Hovind made all his powerpoints around 20 years ago. He has all his videotaped creation seminars that go through all his material on KZbin on his Kent Hovind Official channel. It is 18 hours of this same crazy though and most citations presented are vague at best, some from 50+ year old out of print pop magazines and textbooks. I recommend checking out Potholer54's How to confuse a creationist playlist on KZbin, he is a journalist that goes through most of these creationists main points and finds some of those citations.

"The Bible does not say the Earth is 6000 years old." True, only if you look for a direct quote. However, if you take Adam and Eve as literal people and creation as a literal event, you can still use the Bible to come to that conclusion. You go from begat to begat until you get to Moses, then you estimate that was about 3500 years ago, and ta-da you have 6000ish years.

It’s very uplifting to watch someone react without all the knowledge needed to just rattle off the answers and - with just a few quick google searches - pretty much get most of the points right. I’m used to watching debunking YEC videos from scientists but it’s nice to “test myself” to see how much of the reality I am able to bring to the table when a non-professional reacts to the YEC talking points I used to believe in as a kid. I was impressed by how many really great points you were also able to make in a way that seemed mostly off the cuff. This is a great video and I appreciate your work a lot!
