My dad , who passed last year, wasn’t just a fan of the 1911, he absolutely loved them. He was a gunsmith for many years and We were talking when he was in hospice about guns and I asked him what’s his favorite pistol was and his reply was “Any of the 14 1911’s in my gun safe “. He continued “in my mind, it’s the only automatic pistol that I would have in a shtf situation. They’re tried and true “. I gave my step brothers one each and my son’s one each and kept the rest. They do make a statement when you snatch one out. I’ve grown to love them too. Much love to you Scott. And RIP Dad.

It's actually interesting to see at the damage and how weirdly "the path of least resistance works" I mean... the charge inside that .45 ACP bullet was so powerful,it was literally easier for all the pressure to tear the barrel and the gun apart than push the bullet all the way down the barrel.
@nemesisnick66 Жыл бұрын
question now is how short of a barrel would you need to make that not teh case
@CatTechSupport Жыл бұрын
For note: The actual patent for the 1911 shows that the weakest point along the barrel is the along the lower part of the barrel as it is not fully supported by the remaining mass of the slide. Unless you have lightning cuts or speed cuts on the slide that barrel will be fully supported along the left, right, and top but not the bottom making the look up inherently air tight and forcing any over pressure downwards: this pressure being forced downwards is the very reason the locking action works as it prevents the action from opening until it is safe but if you have to much... well you saw what happens.
@jediknight1294 Жыл бұрын
I'm surprised how it failed, Normally the magazine baseplate blows off. I wonder if the Iver Johnson has a cast frame.
@jediknight1294 Жыл бұрын
@nemesisnick66 250k psi is beyond the failure point of steel that thick you'd need a SIGNIFICANTLY thicker barrel to take it, you can take a 45acp 1911 barrel safely to top end of 45 super pressures but at 250k you are beyond what a short barrel will drop pressure wise.
@anteshell Жыл бұрын
That is not quite how it works. The pressure takes the path of least resistance only in the longer periods of time. When the pressure wave is practically instant, the first thing to break is the first thing the pressure wave hits. Shock force loads works differently than force over time. On the other hand, If we ignore the bullet in the barrel and are observing in a smaller scale just the barrel, it will break from where it is the weakest. From where the crystal lattices have the weakest bonds together in the metal.

I must have been lucky, when I was serving in the Army at Ft. Carson I purchased a Thompson 1911 from a private owner who also did his own reloads, for the first 100 round had no problems no misfires so I bought another 100 rounds from him, after the first mag no problems, the first shot of the second mag boom, it appeared that the first round some how set off the rest of the rounds in the magazine, when I open my eyes I couldn't believe them my hand was still there, had a couple of minor cuts and it was numb for a while, what really surprised me was the gun, it had the stock walnut grips, they were obliterated, the mag was blown out of the gun, after I went to the dispensary and got patch up I took the rest of the ammo and the gun back the guy clean up re-blued and put some Pachmayer grips on it, wasn't sure I should trust his reloads I bought some Remington FMJs and tried it out, had no problems, that's why I will alway be a fan of the 1911

First, most of us like to purchase stuff cheap specially the vegetables etc to be used for targets may be the cinder blocks were bought with the same mind set. The 45 acp is one of the most reloaded rounds in history. Instead of making a high power round, the opposite is just as likely. What would happen with a squib load that pushed the round into the barrel followed by regular powered load without clearing the obstruction?
@yoboibrax Жыл бұрын
Is it just that genius or did my brain actually just stop working..?
@darrylpioch2055 Жыл бұрын
A normal pressure round would just push it out. You’d be surprised what it takes. On a demolition ranch episode a few years ago Matt did barrel obstructions on 9mm and one barrel was completely filled with solder and it pushed it out. Another was stuffed with a piece of rebar and same thing just turned the rebar into a missile. And they were hipoints which I’m sure have poor quality barrels. On a high velocity rifle with a long barrel it would probably be more eventful though. There’s also a minigun video on KZbin where they fire a holy crap ton of rounds and every now and then you can see a squib on the slow mo and then the next time the barrel cluster finishes a rotation the next round just shoves it out

The normal operating pressure for a 1911 is around 20K PSI not 40K PSI, the .460 Rowland has a maximum chamber pressure of 40K PSI though. Also the dummy hands were much farther forward than if they were real hands griping the pistol so there likely would not be as much damage to your hands as this depicts but because your grip would likely have less force than a vise your head might not do so well from the recoiling remains of the pistol.
@vigunfighter Жыл бұрын
SAAMI pressure for a .45acp is 18,000 to 21,000 psi. I believe you said 40,000 psi in the vid. Most kabooms of 1911s result in little to no injury to the shooter, The case head isn't supported at the feed ramp, so the case web lets loose there, directing all the pressure down into the magazine well. Mag will be destroyed and ejected, handle pannels may break/crack/come off, that's where most injuries will come from.
@Roccoo Жыл бұрын
thank you, came here to say that. I would add that, with exception to 45 super and starline 45 acp brass which are capable, though with questionable safety, of reaching those pressures if the reloader is skilled enough.

I watched a friend suffer a squib round barrel blockage on his 1911 followed up with a live round. A far more likely problem than this entertaining intentional hot round event. The good news is after the barrel split, the gasses were directed, per design, down into and out the mag well leaving some serious powder burns on my buddy’s hands where gasses got through the grip/frame gaps. Other than marks on and stinging palms, no harm or foul. Well, until he had to go after IMI who did eventually pay for the damaged firearm. Modern metallurgy is pretty good and the gurus of design plan on the failures and relief paths.

Hey man did you see what just happened to Ballistic High Speed? All to similar to what happened to you but with a RPG. I think you should reach out to them and give them some love. I thought it was awesome when all the other gun channels supported you. Take care

Did no one else notice the coin toss? He said heads for the S&W but he decided to blow up the booger gun anyway. Truly an unbiased decision.

Normal operating pressures for the standard .45 Auto hardball round is 21,000 psi...not 40,000. And you couldn't produce 250,000 psi in a .45 case if you packed it with C4 and plugged the barrel. So cool that you trashed a perfectly serviceable pistol for shits and giggles. You're my hero.

This series is awesome! I've always wanted to see what it would take to make a 4 bore fail.
