The Snake Temples of Kerala, also known as Sarpa Kavu, are actually a botanical jungle. These woodlands are becoming increasingly scarce nowadays. Traditionally, every large home or "Tharavadu" had its own Sarpa Kavu. People used to believe that if these Kavu were destroyed, God would punish them by not providing groundwater. It actually says that destroying trees will drain our groundwater. Nowadays, only a small piece of Sarpa Kavu or Snake Worshiping Area (forest) is maintained, and that is adjacent or within a temple.

Sarpa (snake) worshiped in Kerala because they live in patal lok, believe that they protect our land by protecting us from other roddents like rats, ghoose, white ants (deemak) etc, the temples are naturally created with dense trees, white ant nests and some rocks. It act as coolent to the property for around 5kms land. Heard that Americans studied these and creating Sarpa temples in their land. You can visit Sarpa temples in Kerala to know more about that. But you should be careful to observe the rituals in temple. ( Natural & free )

Kaavu thendalle makale Naadu mudiyum കാവ് തീണ്ടല്ലേ മക്കളേ നാട് മുടിയും Dense forests covered the land in ancient times. Kerala was the land of Kaavu. Later Tantric temples took over and Kaavu relegated to the background. Still every temple nurtures its own kaavu. Some Devi temples have Yakshi in the kaavu, who accompanies the Diety.

So back in the time when population was very low and people used to live in a society formation and every society had such temple with Paambu Kaavu/Sarpa Kaavu/ Snake temple; Which was made to avoid rats and snake interaction from humans. Basically the society will do pooja to pay respect to the snake god according to the Vedas, Because snakes are also part of the ecosystem. So, after the pooja the people will put some food there as prasadam which will attract rats to eat and those rats will spend their quality time there which will attract snakes to eat the rats. This whole peaceful process keeps these animals far from the human habitat and also keeps the ecosystem alive. 🕉

Here in Kerala temple rituals are performed very sacredly and it is not like north no one is allowed to touch the idol or bell. In any temple first before entering the main temple inside you will see(Aalmaram)or neem treeidont know what we say about this tree in English you have to go around it 3times then there will be Bappa or many upadevataas first you should pray then only you should go inside the temple. Here temple and its premises are kept very sacredly. Now keralas beauty gone due to buildings.

Bhagavan Parashuram apne parashu aaj ke Karnataka ke Ghokarn se pheka tha aur Kanyakumari main jakar gira. Us pradesh se Samudr peeche hogaya aur Keral bana. Us din se Keral ke log Nagom ka pooja karna shuru kiya. Ye suni sunayi story hai, Scriptures ke katha muje patha nahi hai. Kerala ke Mandir main hi nahi gharom main bhi Nagom ka mandir hota tha. Ab adhik nahi hai. Nagom ke mandir ko malayalam main 'Sarpa Kaav' or Pambu kaavu' bolte hai. Mere ghar main 3 Sarpa kaav the. Actually Sanatan Dharm main Nagom ka bahut bada sthaan hai.
