I have a fully built Quaife diff in the rear of my Xdrive car. Everyone said I was wasting money and they were wrong. It truly changes the way a car drives and handles. 100% worth it before you throw power at a car.

@jgjgjgj1 it wasn't cheap and you kinda just have to suck it up and forget about the money. It was 3800 for the diff. I spent about $400 extra on REM polishing of the gearset. Then $600 for install at a premier indy shop in my area.

It's honestly and labor of love and ever since cars became a mainstream hobby, most just wanna make cheap power and throw the car away. Everyone does the same shit to these cars. I wanted to be different.

Good vid as always, my opinion on LSD: Get one, particularly if you want to drift. Coming from an M135i/M140i, these cars already have a compromised rear end and can't put the stock power down properly. LSD makes a huge difference in traction and predictability. Also makes the driving experience more fun! I think any performance oriented car should have an LSD. (FWD/RWD, it doesn't matter) BMW agrees, they just want to upsell you to an M car. In 2017: M240i: £35,000 M2: £44,000 After you optioned an M240i with the M2's standard kit (H/K etc.) plus an LSD, you're not far off an M2's list price and you'd be missing out on all the suspension upgrades. Different story on the used market of course

@MarkG11400 Yeah I had a Quaife in my M135i, and have the MPerf LSD in my M140i. Lockup is more like an M car with the MPerf vs Quaife but they're both excellent compared to a stock Open. The rear subframe kit and bushes has been on my list for a while, just still debating whether I keep spending on the 140 or go to an M3/M4 and be done with it 😅

@@azerty1604 M Perf because you're buying an entire differential and just swap it out. Plus the lockup is more predictable and more consistent. With the Quaife you need to have your stock Open diff opened up and the ATB welded in so it ends up being more expensive plus you can't go back to stock.

I bought one there and got it shipped all the way to Australia. I paid almost a grand for shipping + tax, but it still ended up a whole grand cheaper than buying local. This is kinda stupid considering that it is apparently an Australian company that makes m perf diffs for BMW

Thank you for this video. I'm debating what the right move for me is. My goal is spirited driving. It would be nice to have the ability to drift when I'd like, but opportunities for that where I live are so limited that i wouldn't base my decision solely on that. i have a 2018 540i and have been thinking about getting a LSD before i hit 60k miles ( quaife won’t let you trade your stock diff if you’re at 60k+ miles) . One of the most desirable parts of M cars to me is their handling and abilities to drift . In your educated opinion do you think i’ll be able to start drifting with this bolt on?

Great info! Sounds like there will be a noticeable difference coming from open diff and ediff. I dont see any drawbacks especially seeing its progressive. Just to be clear. Accelerating in and of corners is achieved faster? Also, do these really have to be rebuilt over time or just more frequent gear oil changes?

yes, you can get on the throttle pedal earlier without spinning. i don't anticipate needing to rebuild but it will need regular fluid changes.

Excellent! Is turn in improved on corner entry? Or, does it sort of understeer going in but allow you to steer with throttle in the apex and out the corner? It doesn't sound like there's much of a concern with snap oversteer when compared to the torsen differences? Although, I'm sure you can get the tail out if you like but more controlled.

i have 2 sets of wheels. stock wheels with Michelin as4 all-seasons for daily driving. apex wheels with continental extreme contact force tires for track driving. i also did a track day on stock wheels with upgraded tires back in June. so i guess it depends on what you're referring to.

@@kern417 Ok. Don't laugh at the reason why I asked. When I used to play Grand Tourismo and Forza Motorsports I would get the adjustable LSD. I like adjusting the decel so that when I am aiming for the apex during decel it helps to keep the car under control. So I was wondering if that (9%) was noticeable with that diff you installed. You said no so I appreciate the response.

nah i understand and honestly i was curious too. i used to have a lot of movement under heavy braking so i was nervous that it would make it worse. but it's very progressive.

Hi Kern, I've ordered an OS Giken LSD for my M140. They're built to order after you supply your VIN. My VIN shows up as a 3.08 final drive, but this is the manual short gear ratio diff. My car is an auto. Auto's are the 2.81. I've put a pause on the build until I try find out why this is. Did the auto diff come out with different final drive ratios?

@@domostructor147 No, mine is mid 2018. Part number ending in 411. Looks like it's the same one that the 135i used. This is assuming RealOEM has the correct information for my VIN which it hasn't let me down so far.

where are you entering your VIN? VIN doesn't usually record things like transmission options. i'm guessing 3.08 is just the default, but if your car is auto then it should be 2.81. For example, even in RealOEM it shows 3.08, but then it shows 2.81 underneath if you have the auto trans.

@@kern417 - VIN is entered in RealOEM where it asks the for the last 7 digits. - The official part number for the diff with my VIN is (ends in 411) and that part number is for a 3.08 final drive. - It is true that there is a listing for a 2.81 underneath but that is only for the M Performance option. No other 2.81 listings. - I'm more than happy for you to check my VIN and see if I'm missing anything? Let me know.

i dont know why BMW cant put a LSD form the factory on a car worth $60/70k. they can put all the electronic traction control gizmos, but a real limited slip is 100 times better.
