I watched this so many years ago, and I still come back to it occasionally because of one thing Kerry said: “This means a hell of a lot more to me than winning a Grammy.” No truer words have ever been spoken. To have a brand like Marshall trust your judgment and style enough to take an already classic amp head and not only modify it to your standards, but also add it to their product catalog is so tremendous. To me, this is even more amazing than having a signature guitar. Everyone has one of those. Not everyone has a signature amp that actually gets made like this. Tons of folks have one-of-a-kind modified amps with their own specs; but not like this. So cool. Too bad they don’t make these anymore.

One of the main reasons I respect Kerry so much not only as an artist, but who he is as a person. I met him one back in the 90's and he's the most solid dude you'll ever meet. He is uncompromising no matter where he is or who he is around. There is nothing fake about him. He knows what he likes, what he wants, and who he is. Just like Slayer, you always know what you're getting with a Slayer record. I'm a drummer, but I love equipment of all kinds. You listen to Kerry and Jeff's guitars from 1990 and they sound exactly the same as they do today. That's rare in today's music industry. Slayer is the most influential metal bands of all time. And Kerry is one of the most influential metal guitarists of all time. Without Kerry King there would be no Pantera. That's a fact.

Mackenzie Hunter I think it's got less to do with GW and more to do with the player. If Kerry was actually a good, versatile player, and that sure is debatable within the heavy metal community, his ability would cut through no matter what medium he's playing in. Problem is, he just flat-out sucks! Even with signature equipment from Marshall and B.C. Rich, it doesn't cover up the fact that his abilities are very limited as a player. He can jam on riffs, and that's it. Put him in the studio with a seasoned player, or simply take the whammy bar off his guitar, and he'd be lost. Hell, you can hear it on the new Slayer record with Gary Holt on co-lead guitar. Gary only played a small handful of leads, and what little he played absolutely smoked Kerry's horseshit leads. Kerry's a shitty player who caught a lucky break, and he's be screwed if he had to go on talent alone, because there isn't any.

+Mackenzie Hunter All I know is I am buying a DSL 15c tonight and it definitely sounds like ass on guitar world. Im hoping it is the guitar world ass effect and not the amp. The 40c sounds like metal mayhem by comparison in the same video. Oh well. Here goes nothing.

+6672rock He's a good rhythm guitarist, and he's very tight in that respect but you're right his solos arepredictably terrible. I once saw a compilation video of his solos and one comment that really made me laugh was "There are only 2 types of guitarist that can make these kinds of solos: a blindfolding guy who doesn't know he's tuned down a half step, and Kerry King"

He's not that bad of a guy...his confidence has been earned from being the metal underdog for a long time when metal sometimes went through some really rough times. He stayed true and stayed heavy...his style hasn't had to change much because Slayer figured out what works for Slayer. He's still better than I am or most anybody I know that plays guitar...And without him, well....What Slayer would there be? Keep Reigning!!!!

Question, if I were to use a pedal with this amp, (for a different tone), could you roll back the beast but have the gate block out any excess noise from the pedal? For example a Boss HM-2 maxed out.

Yeah, to drive his amp harder. He also used custom overwound pickups and played all of his rhythm parts on the neck pickup, so it was a very thick and hot signal going into the amp and getting crunch from the high mids while cutting any excess highs and lows.

He gets a lot of shit for not being a very technically skilled player and I believe that the look he sports (tattoos, graphic guitars, chains, ornate sunglasses, etc) makes it easier for people to dislike him. If I'm honest, I agree that he's not very skilled at all and his solos are terrible. That said, he's been playing with Slayer for years, doing a solid job, his sound is integral to the band at this point and he is a fairly down to Earth guy. I would say that Hannemann was the most down to Earth out of the band, but considering how he dresses KK acts like a fairly straightforward dude. He could so easily go for the superior douchebag attitude that his fashion sense could easily convey, but he chooses not to be like that. I think he knows he's not one of the greatest, but he doesn't seek to prove otherwise and he still makes good money too. I compare him to Scott Ian (not as a player, I think Scott's playing is far superior) and their personalities are similar, they both know they're not incredibly skilled at soloing etc, but they play to their strengths (Scott never gives himself enough credit, he has a downstroke that rivals Hetfield and his song writing skills for the thrash genre as a whole are insane). At least KK doesn't sell himself above or below his station, Scott kind of undersells himself to other guitarists, but he's a cool dude.

Alexi Laiho used the JCM800KK on a COB album and it still sounded like Alexi. Everyone has their own taste for how they would dial it in and their own playing characteristics (tone is in the hands) It's just a neat way to get a metal sound out of the JCM800 straight up without having to boost it with an overdrive like people in thrash normally do/did with the 800s. A JCM800 with a boost in front, a noise gate and KT88s is appealing (I love the KT77s for example)

And I noticed people said that there was lack of low end...well for a bass player thats great! the bass should fill in that missing glow end so that you can hear/feel the bass's presence.
