Prices and wait times have increased from a lot of companies but there are still deals available. I recently came across a company building some very cool homes with weathered steel exteriors and prices that are on the affordable end of the spectrum. My uncle and aunt built a glass U shaped house in Miami. The middle has a pool and the two ends of the U had the bedrooms. The middle of the U was a glass walkway and then the master/second bedroom/office was on the right wing and the living room And guest room and garage on the left wing. It was THE PERFECT design for heating and cooling and light and then a opposite shaped U driveway. Sadly they had to sell the house but that design is forever imprinted in my mind as the best way to build for privacy too!!

This is everything. You can use a sliding slatted panel that covers the glass and then when you push it out it creates a privacy screen for something like a balcony or deck.

i do think it is a bit misleading on price - as you know and have said in other videos there are site costs and shipping costs, and assembly costs, and permits ( in some cases) . I recommend you do a reality check video on price that talks to these issues and give some/low/med/high estimates on these incremental costs so that people can really walk away with an appreciation of true costs. I know its not sexy and selling the dream but it is a great education

I just very recently decided to buy a piece of land and put a small home on it. I am still in the planning stages, doing research, and stumbled upon the Tini home, thanks to this video. Your KZbin channel is amazing by the way, incredibly helpful and inspiring (funny too, I find myself giggling here and there). Thank you for making these videos! The Tini prefabs are incredible for so many reasons and I am in total awe, but one of the major issues I am coming up against is purchasing something unseen from Europe and having it shipped for probably around $25K to the US. And there are so many other questions: Will the structure hold up in extreme weather? Are the mechanics (solar panels/batteries, etc.) compatible with US regulations? I've contacted Tini directly and hope to get answers to some of my questions. Ultimately, I don't think my worries are solely about Tini homes, but about any kind of modular home in general - because this concept is still so new there just doesn't seem to be enough research to back up the data. Nonetheless, I am seriously considering taking the risk of getting a Tini home since in my mind the pros seem to so obviously outweigh the cons!

One of the things I really like about your channel is the wide range of designs, build strategies, and international focus. I like this because it SHOULD provide a wakeup call to domestic builders who seem overly focused on prestige styles over price considerations and bluetooth gadgets over off-grid capabilities. The tiny house/prefab revolution that is going on has very little appetite for six-figure cool. Kerry's channel regularly demonstrates that such builders are behind the curve. I’ve got corten roofs on my house. Love it. Bombproof heavy gauge 50-yr lifespan, easy install and affordable. The weathered look seems natural, looks good with log walls, fits well in my forested setting. I want to use it as siding on my next (not log) build for looks and practicality-no more painting not never no how!

Cortex steel is magic, not harsh. The brilliant artist/ sculptor Richard Serra uses it exclusively and it is warm, the coloration sublime and organic. I sure hope they start manufacturing in the US.

I built a house with COR-TEN weathering steel, it still looks beautiful more than 11 years later but there are two issues that shouldn't be ignored: heat and staining. The parts of the building that don't get wet will be very slow to color if at all. It starts out looking like regular steel, then where it gets wet it turns black, and all the water that runs off it drips black and stains everything that the water touches, you guessed it, black. Eventually it takes on that lovely rust coloration but while that transformation is occurring all the concrete under any drip edges will turn black, along with your hands, tools, and work clothes including boot bottoms so you need to really enforce the inside/outside cleaning protocols. I don't know what the black stuff is, but I don't think that I would want it in my food so you probably don't want it to drip onto your vegetable or herb garden. Once it is nice and rusty it can still stain your shirt if you lean on it. The other main downside is that instead of reflecting heat from the sun, it absorbs it very readily. In some climates that might not be a problem, it might even be good, but here in Portland, OR on a sunny summer day it gets so hot that you can't touch it. Not only can it blister your skin but the housewrap underneath can be damaged, fairly quickly if it is touching, but it can also break down even if you have an air gap so you want to use a vapor/moisture barrier that can withstand heat. The last minor downside is that is is metal and it conducts electricity, so it probably should be grounded.

I'm in Australia and that weathered steel looks epic with a native Aussie garden. I go one step further than a U-shaped home - I love the idea of a square (or rectangular) home with a large completely surrounded void courtyard in the centre. I noted that you didn't give dimensions just square footage. As a wheelchair user actual dimensions would be helpful....turning around in a narrow space is the pits:(

Thanks are in order, Kerry. I watched this video last summer and it was the first time I had heard of Tini. I was actually in the market for a tiny house in Colorado and decided to opt for a Tini after talking with several manufacturers in Denver. They didn't compare to Tini. My unit is custom - smaller than the S and larger than the XS, and will be complete next week. Shipping will take a few weeks as well, so I expect to move into the unit in February. Ricardo and his team have been fantastic to work with and have bent over backwards for me in terms of customization of the unit AND of the furniture and accommodations inside. They're installing an RO filter system as well as a custom bed frame with twice as much storage, and a custom bench with drawers and a cabinet for a combined washer/dryer. So, thank you for this video!

I really like the big windows, but to your point - this limits where this type of home can be put in...at least without having some sort of plan for winterization in place. But that being said, as an off-grid option where you have natural privacy, those architectural large windows would be a good aspect and would really provide an open space. the biggest problem is not heat loss - its heat gain. These buildings really need to be oriented correctly or have = exterior shading mechanisms are needed to prevent them from becoming saunas

When searching for a tiny home, my NUMBER ONE priority is whether or not it can be off the grid. This is absolutely “a thing” for tens of thousands of buyers who want to help decarbonize our energy supply. Here in D. C., our home’s electricity is powered by solar panels. We generate so much more power than we need that we sell the excess back to the grid. We receive about $400 a month from our energy company and will have covered the cost of our panels within another year. In other words…our solar energy has paid for itself AND it will provide significant future income. I wish very much that for all your videos, you gave the average monthly energy consumption (although this might be tough, as the homes can be built anywhere), whether or not they come with solar panels or if solar panels can be installed on the roof, and the carbon cost of manufacturing and transporting the home (I.e., is the factory working toward net-neutral manufacturing.). I’d also like to know about rain water capture and compostable toilet options. Thank you!

I'm a huge promoter of being green, but I have done the math and no the payback on solar panel’s without a energy subsidy is not realistic time period. Unless the technology is some sort of low cost miracle panel I am not aware of there is not an economical argument that is credible.

Weathered Cor-ten and massive windows? YES! These are PERFECT for me. Exactly as I planned to build my SC home on my Scottsdale, AZ acreage (before I got lazy and just let it sit). Pricing is fabulous but I question a few aspects of making a successful transaction (like not receiving the item, which has happened a lot to me lately on smaller items). At least with Zenni, we have the in (we are currently fitting their plant and will build the Mesa project soon), so I believe I’ll actually receive the item. Sadly, Zenni isn’t exactly what I want and this is, so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hello Kerry, Thanks for all this content. I have lived off grid for a year and a half now. I haven’t plugged into AC during this time frame. I have 400 watts of solar and a 170 Amp hour Lithium Ion battery. No microwave. Just a single butane burner stove and a diesel heater. No Air conditioning yet but I am looking at the newer 12V roof AC units. I live in a 6’ x 10’ cargo trailer conversion. I built a exterior grade rear slide out that is my queen size bed. I then have the balance of the trailer to live in. Composting toilet. Oh I I live with a 75 lb Berniedoodle dog named Indy.

To get the look without spending a fortune on heating and cooling I would have the weathered steel attached with 4in spacers. The actual siding structure would be gel-coat and painted fiberglass. When you use metal as siding/skin thermal transfer is huge. Unless the home is shaded most of the day during hot summer months you couldn't be off grid due to the amount of air-conditioning required in most regions with a steel skin. In the winter your heat is lost to the steel frame and skin drawing it out of the interior. During the winter months the steel frame and skin wicks heat from the inside. You best have your own forest and hire someone to harvest fuel from that forest and keep the fire burning all night for you. Here is a side note about heat transfer..... When I built my house I choose cedar siding painted a boring nondescript white with historical blue trim and doors and a black slate roof. Shortly after moving in I had solar powered exhaust fans installed on six parts of the roof to help reduce heat build up in the attic. They turn on when the temperature reaches 80 in the attic. My AC use was at the time just 3-4 days a summer. My neighbor choose fiber cement siding in a light tan color. They use AC almost everyday during summer despite having a smaller home with less full southern exposure. Five years ago I opted to go rather modern by painting the entire house this historical deep blue-green color with matte black trim, windows, and doors. While my AC use went up 30%in July and August, I am still well under the neighbors AC use. Their AC continues running well into the night because their cement siding continues transferring heat the siding absorbed into their home hours after sundown. Our homes are both 2x6 wood framed with plywood sheathing. While wood framing and sheathing is a low conductor of heat, wood does transfer heat. My point is the siding, roofing type and material, and color of your structure plays almost as big a role in thermal loss/gains as the type of and how much insulation you use. All of these factors should be considered when choosing and siting your new home, or renovations to an existing home. Cheers.

It’s remind me to the Philip Johnson glass house which is some thing I’ve dreamed to build for myself About sea steel exterior - Aesthetically it is phenomenally elegant. However I am thinking about the hot temperature in Southern California where Metal is going to be very difficult to counter the air conditioning inside… So perhaps there should be some other exterior coating provided to counter the climate conditions in a warm temperature Regions.

I live off grid in the middle of the rainforest in Australia. With absolutely NOOOOOOOoo building experience have decked out my own shipping containers (Now I have a little experience I would never use shipping containers again, much cheaper just to frame up yourself and way easier to get materials in than huge shipping containers especially in remote locations) I have also done my own solar, water etc. Learned most of what I have done from KZbin

As I sit here looking out at the Salish Sea in a 70 year old cabin, I think an H would work best. Allow decks on the waterfront side and another on the sunny side of the building.

haha yes designers often over look things like where do I wash my cloths? where do I put my boots? Where do my kids but their toys? Where is my 50" television screen? Basically to live in most these homes you need to change how you live. Like where is the counter space for my appliances? where is the garage? Is there a laundry? Where do I put my car? Most these designers need a reality check on living life as most people are not monks nor do they have domestic servants to clean up after them all the time. Despite all this it is nice to see the beautiful designes and attention to detail.

Really beautiful and great if you're in Spain, except for the VAT. I got a quote for a 2m - 731 square feet (two minis combined). Base price about $98.5K. Add Corton steel, birch panels, bathroom & kitchen, built-in furniture and heat & air and the cost was around $141.4K. Shipping to US is approximately $25k, import tax, ground transportation...that's closer to $185k...and then there's prep and foundation. I got a response to my inquiry immediately with quotes (valid for 20 days). Lovely company. Impressive designs, but still shopping for something closer to home and bit less expensive. Something few mention or take into account is that the private, beautiful, and scenic outdoor space seen in the ad does NOT come with the home ~ you need your own land, and the better it is, the more it costs $$$. Nearly all would-be buyers will be using it in a far more average setting, having close neighbors or other such situations that require the use of window treatments that cancel out the feeling of larger space created by the windows.

I would absolutely have the Corten steal exterior! I love the patina it gets over time and how durable it is! I’d definitely mix in a little board formed concrete. Maybe as part of a deck or planters. A container swimming pool would look amazing with this as well. 10/10

Steel is pretty non-flammable. I have galvalume walls and ceiling. Even if a cabin is in a clearing, a strong wind can blow burning debris up against it.

I think Europe is doing a much better job of designing tiny/prefab/modular homes than in the US. This is exactly what I'm looking for, but wish it was manufactured in the US. I have a feeling the shipping costs are pretty high...plus there is a wait time for it to be shipped across the ocean. I'm definitely still considering it, though, because it's such a great house!

Been off grid for 13 years. I think we are pretty middle class, not totally extreme, with solar and wind power, water collection, septic system etc. Far too mainstream for my liking, but still have a high pressure health service job so there is only so much energy (personal) available. I don't feel like we are missing anything compared to our friends. We have hot water, TV, computers, a big (eco friendly) freezer, internet etc. etc. some of which I would do without. I loved living in an apartment type section of our shed with a composting toilet and plumbing I did myself, however the local authorities didn't approve. Off grid doesn't have to be a hippy, hermit experience if you spend what you would otherwise connecting to the grid. Just takes more of your time, but generally when it goes off, you can fix it yourself. All about resilience.

one thing these fully glazed designs seem to overlook is heat. Those interiors will become greenhouses in a matter of minutes once the sun is out. The trick is to integrate an awning that keeps it's pure looks. Seems like most want to skip this challengeing design item and just go for the looks over comfort...

your 100% correct - site orientation is a huge deal - it is interesting to see most of these homes are created be designers in northern climates....I wonder why lol. They almost all need to have exterior window covers that prevent direct sunlight from entering the cube. Or they should be calles Sauna1, Sauna2, Sauna3, lol

Pretty cool ideas! One thing I would caution buyers of the Core10 siding is that NEVER use that sort of metal where SALT is present. So NO ocean or beach sites. Core10 basically disintegrates when exposed to salt and water. It is slow but unstoppable too. Dry climates inland are best for this sort of material.

@@susandurchfort2888 - i studied daylighting in architectural school and bet way to prevent internal heat gain is from external covering. inbetweent he pane solutions are not as good and internal blinds curtains are least effective. I love the clean modern design and extra glass space but as many people have said i too do not want to live in a room that feels like a sauna

weathered steel maybe?? my question is usually has anyone successfully ordered from china Mexico etc. actually received the product and was happy with the finished product remember when a contractor ordered drywall from china after hurricane katrina and it all had to be torn out because of the foul egg odor months later scams and throwing up a website anyone can I will pay more from right here in the usa great video as usual!!!!!

That weathered still is absolutely gorgeous. I think that look would be perfect for rural deserts landscapes, like Joshua Tree or Las Vegas. I mean, it would look cool anywhere really but I'm picturing it surrounded by sand and sagebrush at sunset and think it would be really stunning.

Looks very nice. I think too many windows could be problematic, depending where the house is located. The outside that appears to weather is appealing and less boring. Coming from Europe could be a challenge because all states have their respective building codes. A great option to ponder. Thank you, again, for the time and talent utilized to create this video. BTW, I believe your solar lights addresses the qualifications for living off the grid!

I'm pretty traditional, but I like the look of that rusty steel. I also like how the interiors look, but I didn't see much storage. I assume there's a closet in the bedroom, but the living area would need a piece of furniture to hold some of your "stuff."

Love the weathered steel, but I wonder about putting it in climates with snowy winters - is it insulated enough? I suppose having steel walls wouldn't be any colder than having windowed walls ...

its not an issue, i was an architect. Today insulation is not in the exterior material like in adobe or hay bale or log homes. It biggest issue my be heat gain but these are highy designe i am sure they figured it out. Also, for permit approval they need to comply with building codes which have minimum insulation values - so again your covered.

@@ARTIST-AT-LARGE Great good luck, every home is unique and all have pro and con across a host of issues the site, the construction methods, the limits and conditions of the systems. Houses also age and each has a differnet way of aging. Log cabins a great usually for R value of a wall but are notoriously bad for inflitration around seams of windows and doors an even through the top top of the foundation walls or if the logs were place incorrectly or if different logs experinced different rates of shrikage over time. If your log home has been around and inn the family I am sure you know all the issues. Well maintained a log home is picturesque and really awesome experince if heated efficiently. It has a wonderful nostalgia factor. - Best of luck on your venture !

Regarding "Off-Grid", we are waiting for the market to shift before buying, however our intent is to be semi-off-grid. Specifically, solar/wind/battery to handle our electricity needs, recycling our food waste/pet food waste into something like a Home Biogas 2 to create gas stove/firepit fuel and fertilizer, and lastly to capture and contain rain water to supplement for growing veggies/gardens. With the current droughts, and the power companies needing to cut power to prevent forest fires instead of upgrading equipment to protect citizens, it just makes sense to have a system you can count on IF you live in a situation that allows it. We also want to incorporate some of the Earthship designs into our home such as re-using sink/shower water to flush toilets and passive heating cooling like termite mounds and ant hills use. Why take water vapor out of the atmosphere with AC causing droughts 'downstream' when a passive more environmentally-friendly (and MUCH cheaper) option exists? Just one example for you.

Its a base kit. Of course you can pay for smart glass that turns opaque at flick of switch. Decking\pergola\shutters and awning would be additional in any house. Total agree solar overheating ought to be designed equally as chic and cost effective
