My take is that for heart disease vegan is the safest diet (Studies show lower cholesterol and inflammation markers and lower mortality) and for diabetes it will be keto. If you have both like me then a plant based keto seems the best

I have a question - in the video about fasting ( I don't know the proper term for it - auto-something) you talked about a paper that was published that says that fasting is good for people to "clean their foundation" to be able to, afterwards, on top of that, build a healthier body. Now, I'm curious - had that research had 100% succes rate or not? If not, then why would that be recommended to everyone when a vegan diet which proves to be effective for 80% of the people isn't pushed more, because 80% of the population currently eating meat could be healthier just by switching to a plant based diet, but is instead met with "an omnivore diet is probably better for you, because there is a possibility that you are on those 20%"?

Both are extremely beneficial. I lost alot of weight on a keto diet before I went vegan 4 years ago. After going vegan I gained alot weight and was hard to lose or sustain weightloss. About a year ago, I combined my vegan diet with keto plus Intermittent fasting and I've lost alot of weight almost effortlessly. I realised I ate too many carbs on my vegan diet.

Hi, thank you for you comment! I am an ethical vegan for almost 10 years, I allready do intermittent fasting, but still are overweight, thinking of switching to keto. Do you have recommendations for vegan-keto recepies? Where to find some good ones for weight loss, I am a bit afraid, of all that carb counting, and it seems, there are a lot of other things to add up and keep track off. So it would be more motivating to follow detailed recepies for one person. Thank you for your time!

Two almost absolutes no matter what eating plan you work with that I see is; 1. Waaay less to ZERO sugars, process carbs, man made "pseudo foods" and alcohol 2. Intermittent Fasting/lo term Fasting at least 12 hours. Balancing 12 Hrs Feed and 12 hrs (or more) Fast. NO MATTER the diet, these two are mandatory. Have junk only on special occasions.

I've been vegan for 3 years. The biggest improvement for me has been elimination of joint aches and pain. Also improved skin and energy. Everyone's body is different and you should do what works best for you. I honestly think dairy and eggs were causing my issues more than meat. I might try adding some fish back to my diet and see how I feel.

Animal food products rebuild alright, but over the long haul it "rebuilds" many unwanted health metrics like higher cholesterol, higher blood pressure, higher prone to many other negative conditions and illness. Lean the whole plant based route anyday over keto. I know folks who have lost 20-80 lbs the healthy way going whole plant based diet.

@BenBen Cincis I’ve maintained a vegan diet for nearly four years. You should feel guilty for speaking down to this individual, who stated clearly that they could not eat a diet high in grains due to a preexisting condition. Veganism is about living a life of reducing harm and suffering, and being compassionate towards all living beings: but your lack of compassion towards this person is not reflective at all of the principles of veganism. I implore you to maybe check your ego. Peace and blessings to you.

BOY, DO YOU MAKE SENSE 🤓. Thank you 😊 Thank you! Dr Sten. (My story in brief) For 20 years I was a 90% vegetarian. I did eat eggs, and VERY occasionally a little fish and chicken. Last year cholesterol rose above average so I became a strict vegan. Cholesterol dropped! BUT.. towards the end of this vegan stint, my body was telling me I needed something different. Although I have always avoided processed food, I was putting some belly fat and just felt OFF. For the last TWO weeks I’ve eaten lots of low carb vegetables ... and fish, or canned sardines, or pastured chicken, or chicken livers sautéed in garlic.... every day.... I feel so much better for it ! I’ve dropped a few pounds... although I’m not overweight/obese. MAYBE ... the human body responds well to change 🤔. I’ve decided to alternate; vegan one month, low carb plus chicken/fish the next. No cheese or dairy (except eggs) on either month (not a cheese or milk person). Btw, for context I’m an 67 year old active female, but I think my ~new plan~ might work for lots of people.

Whoa...right on time for me, Dr. Ekberg. After endless videos on both keto and vegetarian lifestyles, I thought last night what if both are correct but at different times??? I was torn between what stage my body is in, and what do I need? I really appreciate you breaking this down in a sensible, understandable way while being compassionate. For my brain, a more observational and personal approach while understanding the mechanisms of what each type of food plan assists with helping our body heal. This will assist me in my journey, along with a functional medicine Dr. that will do a stool test, and we'll then have makers to work from. Keep on educating us!

Hello, I have been watching your videos for past few months and it has been so helpful and informative to me! I agree with you about the fact that each person is different and so are the diets that best fit that person. I became vegan 3 years ago, eating whole foods like fruits vegetables, rice and beans. But overtime I noticed that I couldn't digest some of the plant foods that are high in FODMAPs. These sugars are naturally found in many vegetables like onions, garlic, leeks, as well as fruits like bananas, apples, and pairs. Worst of all, it's also abundantly found in most beans and legumes which is the main protein source for vegans. I'm suffering from really bad diarrhea but I have still have to eat these foods to get my dietary protein. I think that it might be better for me to switch to pesco vegetarian, but I have not been able to change my dietary style yet...

Vegan is a great cleanse, but it is not the optimal lifestyle for most people in my experience. I think Pesco/lacto/ovo would be a step forward for you. Read up on the GAPS diet. She has a great book on gaps and another on vegetarianism.

You are right dr. Ekberg, regardless of research you have to figure out what diet what works for you, people are different and need to keep an open mind. Some people call themselves plant based, because the vegan term is associated more with ethics and less with diet. I was vegan-keto for 6 months, in the past, did not work so good for me.

Bravo. Very important video. Well explained. I would like you to address the gut bacteria combinations in different people. That may partially explain why some people digest carbs better and not have too much spike in blood sugar. Also, it’s like a second brain inside the body that works differently for different people. How much nutrients we will absorb or how sensitive we are to certain foods may be due to our gut microbes. Please inform us more about this subject. Thanks

I have come to the conclusion(?) that anytime anyone says they can't digest this or that they are in a leaky gut situation that needs healing.
@drekberg
@drekberg 5 жыл бұрын
Probably true that people with leaky gut have poor digestion, but the leaky gut was probably a result of poor digestion and not the cause. Whole food, digestive enzymes, meditation to kick in the parasympathetic NS and of course cut out sugar grain and allergens.

There is no one all be all. Our bodies are different and respond differently. So whatever works for the individual is the best. Dr. Ekberg, you are so right. When I do agree that cow's milk is bad for the majority of the adult human population, I also know that cow's milk (at least in moderation) is great for people like me because we have 13 to 15 copies of a gene for lactose persistence. In our case, cow's milk is like medication, plus it does not have added sugars of the plant milks.

I started Keto two mo. ago and started gaining weight back, cellulitis came back, sores came back, pain and weakness returned. You opened my eyes to the need to include more greens and less butter...Thanks. This meat has been getting on my nerves and making me feel heavy and sick wanting to return to my fruit and veggies. Eating two cantaloupes was the beginning of inflammation etc returning so I knew carbs were destroying me. Now I understand it's the starch and sugar. You're so wonderful to share your wisdom and knowledge and understanding. May God bless you greatly.

Thank you Jazzy 4you. If you want to try some animal products start with fish and maybe take some digestive enzymes with HCl if you want to try meat. If you can't digest the meat, it will make you sick. But remember that while there is no quick fix for problems that took years or decades to develop, it could save your life to spend some time learning how to get healthy safely, and how to sustain the results. Here is a list of videos on that and related topics. kzbin.infosearch?query=insulin+resistance+intermittent+fasting+OMAD+keto+food

This is why we've switched from straight Plant-Based/Vegan to a hybrid Plant-Based/Vegan/Keto along with Intermittent fasting. The Keto part is not so much adding lots of meat and fat as it is cutting out as much sugar and carbs as we can. The weight is coming off since we started and the hunger is gone. We can now easily do an 18 - 6 fast or even OMAD without feeling starved. Thanks to sites like Dr. Ekberg (and some others) I think we have figured out what works for us. Great info here!

@@Nellie7777777 Don't think you'd be able to duplicated it but here goes. The main course will be a bowl of home made veg or miso soup loaded with whatever is growing in our garden. There's always a tray of fresh sliced raw vegetables (cukes, carrot, cauliflower, broccoli, etc). Several different ferments like sauerkraut, kimchee, ginger, etc. Pesto and humus to dip the raw vegies in. And then a plate of mixed nuts, seeds and dried fruit of some kind. I know the Keto folks don't like the dried fruit but we're not strictly keto. There might be a few more items like home made sweet potato bread or some boiled chick peas. And then there's my wife's ground fiber mix (hemp, chia & flax) which usually goes in the soup. That's an average meal with an occasional slice of grilled salmon or a can of sardines. A lot of the vegies come out of our garden and it's a rare meal that doesn't include a hand full of fresh micro-greens like baby kale, spinach, etc. My wife's a pro at figuring out what's in season in the garden and creating a meal around those items,

@@Mikheno sounds phenomenal! I have been vegan for 12 years and follow the dr.mcdougall diet. I regret nothing and don't struggle with weight anymore. A few lbs gained and lose it fairly quickly. I do however incorporate intermittent fasting 16:8 and i love the health benefits that come with it. My husband has dramatically dropped weight from this as well. We do eat fairly high carb but, all whole foods. Mostly potatoes, brown rice, quinoa, tons of veggies and beans. What would you suggest for pancreatic issues? I have problems digesting many foods, being bloated, constipated, back pain (left shoulder area) etc. Is there any important nutrient to support the function of the pancreas rather than just taking enzymes? Raw vegetables are no good as well as cooked ones. Too much fiber is no good and too much protein/fat as well.

I am 76 and pursuing low-carb 16-8 eating in order to switch my body to burning fat for fuel. Dr. Ekberg, the advice you give in your wonderfully informative videos is a main source of guidance for me. Thank you so much. I am down 25 pounds since January. My goal is to lose about 40 more pounds and especially to eliminate the unhealthy visceral fat which causes my belly to protrude. I am taking in about 15-40 grams of carbs per day. Would it help if -- in the periods right AFTER ingesting carbs (and protein) -- I got on my elliptical machine for 15 minutes to burn off about 200-300 calories. Wouldn´t such a technique effectively burn away the glucose/ glycogen from the food I just ate? Seems like the immediate depletion of blood glucose/ glycogen would short-circuit the insulin response and my body would switch (or stay switched) to fueling itself by means of ketones from stored fat. Is there any reason that this kind of ´post-prandial´ exercise wouldn´t be healthy -- and helpful for weight loss?
@drekberg
@drekberg 5 жыл бұрын
I like your thinking, but, when your carbs are as low as 15-40 you're not going to have a lot of blood sugar spiking. Exercise is always a good.thing though. It makes you more insulin sensitive and it stimulates the brain.

Excellent advice. You are the BEST! I agree; try it and see what happens! Mark Hyman's Pegan diet is born of him sitting between arguing vegans and keto ans ! ..and realizing that there was a fair amount of common ground. I really value your advice; it's always very thoughtful, useful and informative. You are the first person who actually explained the thing about how the body forgets how to metabolize fats. That just made total sense to me!! Why would my body bother to metabolize fats if i'm stuffing food in my mouth all day. And i'm come to realize that the body is a creature of habit; and it does indeed forget how to do things if it never has to do them. If we learn to speak spanish, but then don't use it for 10 years or more, what happens? We forget it! . So now i'm experimenting with trying to get my body into a bit of ketosis. ..so my body can remember how to do that.
