Hello my fat adapted family! Here's MY guide to ketosis.
Today's topic is the phases, signs and symptoms of ketosis (and being fat adapted!)
I just want to clarify that these are MY opinions (and research!) as someone who has been in ketosis for quite a few years now. You may not agree with my guides and that's okay. This may not be the guide for you. At the end of the day, it's your keto journey/diet/lifestyle, I'm just putting my 2 cents in here to try and help some people with the information I promote.
SUMMARY:
Phases of ketosis:
Phase 1 - You're still using the fuel from your last high carb meal, then after a while, that meal is only fueling you by about 50%. Your body gets the rest from free fatty acids
Phase 2 - Your body is relying on a tiny bit of stored glucose (glycogen) and any free fatty acids.
Your liver will run out of daily glycogen.
Phase 3 - Gluconeogenesis starts (your body making new glucose).
Parts of tissues and organs aren't getting enough glucose so they are running off of these fatty acids completely.
Phase 4 - The start of ketosis (providing you've kept your carbs low)
Your liver is making ketones and your brain is now utilizing ketones.
Phase 5 - Gluconeogenesis is about to stop.
You should be running mainly off of some level of ketones, even if it's low.
Phase 6 (?) - Keto/fat adaptation.
KETO/FAT ADAPTATION AND KETOSIS AREN'T QUITE THE SAME.
Signs & Symptoms of KETOSIS:
- The keto flu
- Feeling tired THEN feeling really energised.
- Feeling focused.
- Less hunger
- Feeling thirsty
- Dry mouth
- Keto breath
- Smelly sweat
- Rapid weight loss (water weight)
- Toilet troubles
- Insomnia
Signs & Symptoms of KETO/FAT ADAPTATION.
- No carb cravings
- Not really hungry... like ever.
- No keto flu symptoms

I have done keto before, lost 70lbs in 2019 and kept most off until 2022. I’m now Back on keto and all in this video is the spoken truth. I am 2 weeks on keto and burning ketones like a pro, it is obvious by the symptoms. It is reassuring to know what to expect. The few first weeks are trying, but oh so worth it.

Just thought I'd come back to this video 7 months later. Decided to utilize the keto diet to cut down my excess fat back in July, this is the one video that remained a staple to my diet and was one of the very first nutritional guides that sparked my now very deep and loved interest in nutrition. I am almost two weeks into keto and feel amazing. I did keto 8 months ago, was on it for five weeks and fell off the wagon🙄 but I’m back on and never getting off again!! Keto is amazing!!!!

I never had keto breath, keto flu or any negative side effects, except depression increasing after a few days. I did measure my ketones, it was increasing from 0.5 to 3+. Then it became 1.5. But after I ate anything, my ketones drop to less than 0.5 and I get depressed again. So I quit after 2 weeks. Now I am trying once more to get into ketosis and this time give it at least 6 weeks to get fat adapted properly.

Legit💯 I am trying to get back on track to this way of eating and glad to be reminded and i like the way you explain it, never bore listening and i am literally experiencing insomnia and keto flu right now but i know i will get through this..❤️❤️❤️ cheers to all of us who choose to be healthier

I'm 13 days in, and this really is the best video I've seen and the one I keep coming back to in order to remind me what I'm doing to myself. Still got very high ketone levels when I do the pee test strips, so I don't think I quite fit the standards of your phase 5, but I have faith I'll get there and I'm sticking to it.

Same exact feeling. I’m on 4 now. I was VERY ADDICTED to sugar and I swear the first day with no sugar in my coffee I was ABSOLUTELY EXHAUSTED. Day 2 was worse and day 3 was the most terrible. I was nauseous, super migraine, exhausted, body aches, super thirsty, and intense cravings. Day 4 I’m finally feeling better. I pray it stays up.

The reason of the smaller hunger is because carbohydrates, starch and sugar raise blood sugar much faster, ending in faster low blood sugar. This roller-coaster creates cravings, and in this end weight gain. Whereas fat burning creates a stable glucose level

Thank you for such a great video. Best I have found so far. I am on day 7 of keto and looking for some answers or advice. I started the diet to reduce inflammation, not for weight-loss. I don't want to lose weight, I would be ok with 5lbs but nothing over that. I work out and have good muscle tone and am a little afraid that I will lose it. I noticed in the past week that my stomach is a little bigger but there is no change in weight so just like you said I assume my body is not fat adapted yet. Overall I doing well with the diet but I don't want to eat a lot of cheese so it can be tough to eat enough fat without additional carbs. Do you have any advice as to what I should be shooting for with my main goal is to lower inflammation but don't want any excessive weightloss? Thank you so much again!!!

My sweat actually doesn't have an odor once I'm in ketosis fully. It's such a nice side effect.

Hiya! I know this video is 2 years old but I'm hoping you still see comments and questions... I don't have a gallbladder. Am I OK to be Keto? Going through a 24 hour fast before starting an egg fast and then fully into keto. Thanks!

I had this incredible high after a couple of days. I had so much energy I couldn’t sit still, I had to go running for a while and I haven’t been fore years. The day after my back hurt so much I had difficult walking coz I am very heavy.

Great info. I went keto in the fall of 2019 and did it for about a year. I got covid in fall of 2020 and I fell off the keto wagon. Fast forward to Friday I told myself I was sick of the carb bs and went right back to eating a ketogenic diet. Am i crazy but I feel like my body jumped right back into breaking down fat for ketones after 3 days. does the body have muscle memory like this?

I don't think it's so much muscle memory after a year BUT as you have already done it once, for a decent amount of time, I think you mentally and physically are more prepared for it and able to adapt quicker! Hope you're okay now, stay safe!

Can anyone tell me how long does the braing fog and fatigue last? For me it’s been incredibly debilitating and it’s making me wanna quit because I can’t function. It’s been three weeks and I can’t take it anymore

If it's been 3 weeks, there may be something else at play such as you need more electrolytes or vitamins, or you need to eat more fat

@@ferasusif yes! This was really helpful. I was white knuckling it for the first 6 weeks but after that it started to get better. The sugar cravings were driving me mad. I’m very happy to no longer have them permanently. This comment was really helpful during my hard times. Thank you for your interest :)

Great video, very informative. Started Keto about 2 weeks ago and have been through (well, actually am still in) Keto Flu with *lots* of diarrhea and belly aches. I have lots of energy though, and practically no hunger. Weird feeling, but very cool.

I am on ketogenic diet since 2019 december, eating lots of high quality minerals, salts, vitamins, I sleep 10 hours a day, I eat truly ZERO CARBS, and I have ZERO ENERGY! after 14 month! WHY? What do I do wrong???

Hm, my initial question would be how much fat do you daily? A common problem is that people lower carbs massively but don't actually eat enough fat to feel energised. It's also important to ask how much liquid you drink a day.

Doing keto is not about cutting carbs to zero it means reducing it.. You need still spare amount of carbs especially your brain is prefer with glucose than ketones

Ketosis is a metabolic state not a specific diet. Fasting and zero carb will both put you into a state of ketosis. Your body will make the 150-200g of glucose it needs a day via gluneogenesis. Also studies (that I can link) show that your brain only needs thrives off about 70% BHB - showing that the brain actually prefers ketones to glucose

@@TheKetoKitchen I have SIBO and SIFO for a long long time, thats why I can't digest any carbs, I do IF, and keto, and low FODMAP, and eat allicin and oregano and ACV etc etc, but nothing helps, I follow the protocols for years now, yet no improvement. I can't eat carbs, I feel sick even from a spoon of rice.

Frequent urination is a common side effect that happens usually at the same time as the keto flu (the first 2-ish weeks) - this is due to your body using up the glucose in your system, glucose that binds to water, the water then gets "removed" aka you wee/sweat it out. That water also has important electrolytes in it, so you flush them out and become deficient. This is why frequent urination and the keto flu go hand in hand with each other!
