@@MarkWildman I do not doubt some people have incredible grip strength and endurance. Certain types of gymnasts come to mind. I meant for max loads, at very low or even 1 rep. Which isn’t really appropriate for the 3 implements you mentioned anyway If you refuse to use any implement other than the body for deadlifts, for example, you will never lift as much as you could with straps. If you could you’d be a mutant

@prabpharm073 жыл бұрын
When the purpose is training for longer times, going for long cycles, it doesn't remain only about strength. You need measures to ensure better assistance to continue longer. If you have tried say a clean and jerk/press for even a 5 min cycle, you know what I mean. Purpose of kettlebells is not only strength, if it was, kettlebells were never made with submaximal weights. The purpose is cardiac and respiratory conditioning as well, hence long cycles. If strength is all you look for, kettlebell is not the best equipment, barbell is. Personally, I never got the desired results with chalk, it doesn't allow handle to move freely in my grip.

I agree with most of what you say. I do use some chalk if I’m doing multiple sets of 360’s and 10-2’s with a mace that last say 3-5 mins per set.

Its currently summer here in Aus & I have a big case of the sweat problem making the bell slippery. Ok for clubs as it's not quite such sweaty work. I'll need a couple of sweat bands for my arms, but I have also been using some "Bear Complex" gymnastic grips that work very well with a bit of chalk. Enough grip but the bell doesn't 'stick' when it needs to rotate. They are also good for callus prevention when going hard with heavier weight.
@cucciafr683 жыл бұрын
Used a lot of chalk in the beginning until I ripped my palm open on the last rep of a heavy kettlebell clean and press reverse ladder. I still use some chalk some of the times, but only about a pinch. I'm a sweaty guy and it's usually grabbing my shirt to wipe my face, then my hands are wet. Using a gym towel has helped mitigate that. Will look into the guards.

Hi Mark, What I'd like to say it is that I understand your point of view that you ought to be strong under any circumstances and I am going to try out homemade forearms bands for a while aswell to find out if they work for me. I am also not advanced kettbell trainee I have started few months ago because of next lockdown. However my knowledge brought from barbell training compells me to say that as long as grip is your limiting factor during the lift/excerise. First: you have to move forward no matter what, second: improve your grip of course. This is what a lifting straps were invented for. Even thought you are not allowed to use it during competition, weightlifters use to perform snatch training as well as powerlifters to train deadlift. If stopped my pull up set everytime my I could not hold longer that would deny all the progress and benefits from doing pull up for purpose of getting stronger forearms. Another thing I have to mention is that you always improve your grip always under condition you have to squezze the weight, so only hooks get your grip out of equation. I have found that using lifting straps for deadlift imporves my deadlift performed without straps overtime. It should be the same case for lifting bells with chalk or without. As long as you train for your self I agree that you should "get stronger" and imporve your grip in order to count it no longer as your weak link in chain. Anyhow if you struggle too much with grip, your training might become less fun, frustrating and so on. Moreover focusing too much on grip may lead to neglect all of other benefits you are supposed to get from kettlebell training. As I mentioned in the beggining those are only my first impressions and thoughts and I will try to verify it my self. Keep doing good work and videos Greets from Poland :)

The varnish on clubs and maces doesn't really help. I thought of removing all that with sandpaper... Have a nice powder coated mace 9kg where the friction and grip is exceptionally awesome! I tried letting fly a 15kg club while milling. It's also pretty loud. ;]

This is an old video. But I wanted to mention something I liked about the sock idea. I wear a hoodie during most of my workouts and I find that the sleeves become loose. This bugs me during kettlebell Cleans. I use a pair of cut black socks and put it over the cuffs of my hoodie sleeves. Nicely keeps the sleeves in place so I feel more confident in my grip on the kettlebell.

Hi Mark, thank you for all the great content. Do you have a recommendation on how to protect the floor when kettlebelling? I train at home in an apartment with hardwood floor, and I am scared to damage it. Arm guards are a nice idea BUT I sweat directly from my palms. A lot. Like "hyperhidrosis is a real medical condition" a lot. So the arm guards don't really help. "Get stronger" is nice, but when the sweaty hand situation is preventing me from safely doing longer sets and/or higher weights, I've accepted that there's a place for chalk in my gym.

I gotta disagree on this one, and it's the only time really. Chalk is, for me, it's an added safety. I've never had issues with sweat dripping down making it messy or anything, and it allows me to have a loose yet stable/confident grip when I am clubbing or doing most kettlebell exercises. Also, sweat would not only come dripping down, palms sweat as well so at some point, no matter how strong you are, your grip integrity will suffer because there is sweat between the metal and your skin. Same as hydroplaning on a rainy road.

I think chalk is a horribly messy crutch for poor grip. As a great alternative I use baseball batters gloves which fit tight and absorb sweat and protect my palms from sharp knurling. They are the best of all worlds and give me a better grip than bare hands.
