I think he means Kevin’s doing the bass on the cello. Yes, Scott usually covers bass during Matt’s/Avi’s solos, but you can hear and see that Scott is doing the bottom of the 3 part background vocals. I will say, however, that maybe on the track on “The Greatest Christmas Hits” that Scott may be doing the bottom harmony while also doubling the bass with the cello, but they couldn’t really do that here since it’s live. They can only sing one part when singing live. Also, it’s sounds like the cello is doubling the bass with Matt for most of the song or maybe a split bass line. I hope I didn’t come off the wrong way, I literally just noticed a few days ago 😂

Kevin’s a damn genius: Yale pre-med, in high school he played saxophone and cello, going to Carnegie Hall in each, and cello competitions in Europe. Besides that there’s the perfect pitch. So Matt’s a bit younger than the rest, out of Berklee School of Music in popular performance and production before moving on to the SoCal vocal scene. Growing up singing in his father’s church, he’s got some of that gospel feel.

Scott normally covers bass when the bass singer solos, but at that moment I think maybe you were hearing the cello. I could be wrong, but I tried watching what Scott was doing and it didn’t look like bass. It wouldn’t be the first time. In a video released between Avi leaving and Matt joining, the trio and Kevin did a cover of Dancing on My Own, and Kevin covered the bass on his cello. Wonderful reaction! Thank you!

Great reaction!! Usually it's Scott taking on the bass when Matt (or Avi) take lead or a verse. I can see Scott singing in the background while Matt sings, so I'm pretty sure he's doing those bass notes. Scott has a great falsetto. You should hear him and Mitch doing Defying Gravity from the Broadway play Wicked! The two of them ran a side project called Superfruit for years starting in 2013 all the way to 2019. It began as simply a weekly chat vlog and morphed into an astounding collection of pieces by either them alone or with friends. They also created a great album...Future Friends 1&2. If you stay on this path of reacting to PTX, it's worth a detour into some Superfruit stuff. This was an amazing and wonderful piece they did. All the fans were astounded at it.... truly floored at what they did....and shocked by Kevin's "Baybeee..."

That might be the only thing he can't do.....😅
@margretrosenberg4205 ай бұрын
@@danielcarter837 The only other thing I can think of is that as far as I can tell he's totally incapable of being mean. Did you see the video where Kirstin announced her engagement to him, by showing him her ring? Kirstin had Elianna in her arms, solemnly taking in everything the big people were doing. Kevin was so surprised when he saw the ring that he took a step back and tripped and fell. And IMMEDIATELY, before it could have been a conscious decision, he started clowning around, trying to turn the fall into something he'd done deliberately, so as not to alarm the baby. All while giving Kirstin congratulations. Edit: I take it back. He also hasn't figured out a way to beatbox and play saxophone at the same time. Yet.

In live performances (which this is), Scott covers the bass line whenever the bass takes a solo. The lowest I've ever heard Kevin sing is in "Run To You," where he just barely dips into the very top of a baritone register. (BTW, "Run To You" has, IMO, the most beautiful harmonies Pentatonix has ever produced, which is saying a LOT. Highly recommended.) Matt was just 23 years old when he joined Pentatonix, and bass voices improve with age. From his earliest performances with Pentatonix, Matt's warm, vibrant voice has been such an asset, whether he was "just" backing Kevin up on rhythm or whether he was soloing. But lately Matt's range has been growing by leaps and bounds. His current lowest note appears to be A1, which is just barely basso profundo, though it can't blow out speakers the way Avi's lowest notes occasionally did. On his upper end, though, all I can say is "Wow!" 😯 I believe that Matt has the largest range of any member of Pentatonix, past or present. As for Scott's range, I recommend checking out his private channel, which you can find here: youtube.com/@scotthoying He frequently uses a looper and lays down five parts for a new song, all the way from bass through soprano, singing all five himself.

Wait two weeks and Mitch will adopt a new look. 🤪 Matt is incredible. There are several interviews out there with Matt telling his history and how he came to be with PTX. Definitely an interesting journey. Scott usually picks up the bass when Matt sings. Scott can get down pretty low, when needed. We’ve been watching these talented artists for many years so we’re used to their abilities. Kevin is an exceptional musician and performer. The first night they appeared on TV in The Sing Off, Shawn Stockman (one of the judges) was blown away by Kevin’s talent. Those Sing Off performances really track the progress of PTX from the beginning. The first night they sang, I knew I was going to be a life long fan. They were innovative and so talented from the beginning.

Shawn Stockman was such a delight on that show. He knew he was being paid to be a judge, and he performed that duty willingly, but as far as I can tell he thought he was mostly there to have fun, and Pentatonix provided that. His response to the first Mitch slap is the standard by which all other Mitch slaps are judged.

#Pentatonix released "Bohemian Rhapsody" almost exactly seven years ago. Mitch has been sporting the mustache for the last year or two; he was wearing it at the Grammys in 2023. It has also been in the last year or two that he's finally come to terms with the bullying he received in high school (I know, that was a long time ago, but some scars run deep). This seems to be the first time in Mitch's adult life that he's felt comfortable in his own body; the mustache MAY be an expression of that.

5:12 - Scott’s range is ridiculous. He can briefly get as high as Mitch w/his falsetto (see Superfruit’s cover of Rise), and he covers the bass part when Matt/Avi solo. He also often has very complicated background harmonies that often don’t get enough credit. Scott’s a beast. 10:09 - two things…1. When Kevin joined PTX he hadn’t spent much time singing. If you go way back to the early days you can see some insecurity when he sings, so it’s pretty remarkable how far he’s come. 2. Kevin spent time training with Yo-Yo Ma-because of course he did. 😅

Scott and Mitch had a side channel called SuperFruit, I have to explain all this so you understand, On there Scott talked Mitch into doing his favorite song from his favorite Broadway musical, the Play is called Wicked, the song is Defying Gravity. The play is the Wizard of Oz told from the perspective of the witches. In this song one witch Elphaba (strange name I know) is arguing with Glenda about learning how to be the first witch to fly on a broom. (the name Defying Gravity makes sense now). You kind of need to understand all of this to not only understand the song, but their "costumes". This song will give you an idea just how high Mitch can go, but I feel he can still go higher. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJWxhJxmbLlofbM
