Sorry, but they absolutely made the right decision in going with Austin vs Rock in a singles match for the title. As beloved as Mick was, there was just something special every time Austin and Rock were in the ring together. To do a triple threat would have been an injustice. Furthermore, we eventually saw how a triple threat can ruin a hot feud. Fast forward to 2007-08, when Cena and Orton were having one of the best feuds of the year. Orton injured Cena and won the title, while Cena returned and won the Rumble. It was literally set up to culminate with a huge match at WrestleMania to end the feud once and for all. Once Triple H got involved, the feud fizzled out and never reached the same heights prior to his insertion into the title match at WrestleMania.

Pretty sure shawn said it should’ve been mick and austin, and by doing that he accidentally screwed mick. Cuz shawn was a big fan of mick and loved working with him. Mick even said on inside the ropes that shawn lobbied for a 1v1 between mick and austin

For example when Austin left without notice and didn’t say anything, when he came back he was welcomed with open arms, when Rock “left” everyone knew he did movies, everyone knew that was his career and he still showed up when he could, and he even expressed how he felt, he was still hated by fans. Also you could tell in 99 Austin was very political because it was obvious The Rock was better than Austin at that time frame but Austin was still the champ, and Rock wouldn’t get an opportunity until Austin wasn’t there (both in 2000 and 2002)
