If you are burned out from school or just need a break, then a gap year is great. Work and save up money, or if you are fortunate to travel, do that before you are locked down with a job and have less freedom to travel. Or volunteer.

This is the stupidest advice I’ve ever seen. I took a 2 year gap year and moved to the United States as an au pair. Not only did I meet my second family, I also realized what I career I want to head into. Taking 2 gap years was by far the best decision I’ve ever made.

I’m really hoping that no one is taking this piece of advice seriously. Gap year abroad, although taking it as a sabbatical from college, was one the best decisions of my life. To me, it means you’re willing to take on risk, adventure, accept personal growth, and build a unique skill set of how to work with others. Mr Wonderful has solid finance advice, but this is definitely not one of them.

I wish I took a gap year. I would’ve worked and helped my parents out to save and pay for college. It also would’ve helped me not bounce around with a major so much, as well as develop myself. I felt like I entered uni too young, inexperienced, and easily influenced/persuaded. My life isn’t about getting a job to make Kevin O’Leary and the likes of him money. Not gonna listen to boomers about the job market anymore because the arrogance is exhausting.

I took a gap year after college teaching English in France and had no regrets. I mastered the French language, made great friends, and got a unique opportunity to live in a small French town. When you "GET A JOB" you're missing a chance. Right out of school you likely have few obligations. So hoping to be able to take a full YEAR during your youth becomes more-and-more difficult once you commit yourself to a lifestyle that society wants: stable job, spouse, kids, mortgage payments, etc, etc, etc.

here's my advice: gap year saved my life, literally. school was extremely overwhelming and i had some really dark thoughts, i couldn't get into the college i wanted. i overworked myself to the point getting up from the bed would be the biggest task ever. i lied there staring at the ceiling. i decided to pause, take a break. my parents were super supportive, encouraged me because they saw me drained mentally and physically. i didn't exactly have one full year because i had to start preparing for the next year's exam from jan. so i had august-december of 2022 to myself. the best months of my life. i caught up to my friends, family, starting working out, eating healthy, my mindset became so much more relaxed, i started sleeping well again. unfortunately it passed by too quick but im extremely grateful to have those months. i feel like a completely new person. 100% recommend it to anyone who's confused or overwhelmed.

@LWRC Most people who take gap years are usually those who just graduated from high school. Gap years are also different for different people. Some take gap years to go to school in other countries or get more learning experiences in places other then college. A gap year can be more than just "taking time off". It can also be good for planning for the long run. But gap years are dangerous if you're not careful with them. Sitting on your couch all day playing video games is not a good way to spend your time
@derekward3512
@derekward3512 4 жыл бұрын
@LWRC are you dumb lol lots of studies talk about the benefits of taking a gap year in between college and high school, thinking you're shooting yourself in the foot is just an old boomer wives tale. And not not all gap years are taken the same, lots are taken going oversees for a year in other countries going to school there.
@derekward3512
@derekward3512 4 жыл бұрын
@LWRC You literally dont have any idea who I am or what my ambitions are. Most of what I am doing during my gap year is education based to prepare me for college and my future career. I'm preparing to live oversees temporarily to get teaching experience as an English teacher. Maybe you shouldn't assume why people are doing what they're doing is because they're lazy. Not everybody needs to follow the status quo and go to college right away, it's ok to be different and it doesn't mean you will be denied by all job opportunities
@derekward3512
@derekward3512 4 жыл бұрын
@LWRC Again this isn't the 1980s dude, there's tons of opportunities and no offense but you don't sound like an expert in all fields, not every single thing needs to be done right after high school. You aren't going to be automatically rejected for taking a gap year. Tons of gap year opportunities include volunteering experience which looks great on college applications. Going to a new culture for example and learning a new language is something colleges love to see on applications. You don't seem to realize that there are tons of opportunities for education that occurs during a gap year that doesn't just include sitting at home

Actually, don't. Unless you already expect to get $0 from financial aid when you go to college, most of the money you will earn while working that gap year will go to uni. costs. Why?? Because you have to report that earned income, both the gov and your uni. will have access to that information, and it will disqualify you from need-based aid. There's no point in wasting a year's time and money by working when you could just get the aid without it.

Who comes up with these advice subjects?😂 gap year after college. I took a gap of 6 months and it was one of the best decisions I made. A lot of online courses and computer skills were gained, and I was able to thoroughly look for another course that better suited me. From my experience not all is lost when you totally fail and this is when you can learn a lot more than ever before whilst clearing your head.

TheCoffeeNut711 wow. What a foul work ethic and attitude they have. All the things they learned and they do nothing. Maybe the study should come with free mental evaluations after they graduate. Debt isn’t a fun thing but doing nothing can only make it worse.

TheCoffeeNut711 totally agree with you . Not getting too stressed was a good thing after lots of it at once. Too had people aren’t as prepared for the real world as they can be. It has me wondering about how they’ll integrate into society (or not)

What about if you graduated with a degree you enjoy, but you are unsure of, and that gap year is spent networking with creatives or building a network of writers/artists in trying to create something that could potentially involve your major, or trying to be a potential influencer through youtube and podcasts before the 9-5 chains you down? What if I graduate in computer science but I decide I want to give myself 1 year to develop, or create something, whether it be through computer science, or instead be something like write a script, screenplay, or book, or go to california and try to make something of yourself before going into that career you majored in as something you both enjoy and can make money in, but not as much as other more creative options? What if I use that gap year to try and discover the possibilities for another career outside of my own path set in college?
