Hey tip for those who may be running into a sluggish Windows 10 install in virtual box. Go to your windows settings and disable Hyper-V. Keep Virtualization on because that's the only way you can run VMs, but Hyper-V sometimes causes Windows 10 VMs to run sluggish almost unusable. I wasn't able to install windows 10 completely for hours til i changed it

@@KevtechITSupport Quick question, why is it that you’re not able to access the internet when connected to static IP and the DNS server, but you can access the internet on bridged mode?

Host-only makes is so that your VMs can only talk to each other and to the host OS, bridged mode actually makes the host OS's default gateway (your home router) the VM's default gateway, which then treats every VM as an individual new device, so the DHCP server that is running in your router and that assigns IP addresses to the devices of your local network (PCs, laptops, phones, printers, smart TV, etc) thinks that every new VM in bridged mode is a new device, so it assigns it an IP address. Thats why in bridged mode you have internet and in host-only you don't.

Just wanted to add a comment for anyone else that had this issue, but you might have to disable IPv6 while doing the domain join, as otherwise you may get an error that no domains or controllers were able to be found. This was the case with setting up the controller as a 2019 VM on one Hyper-V server, with the 10 Pro VM on another Hyper-V server. Once the join was done I could enable all of my other DNS settings again and have full internet connectivity. The videos up to and including this one have been good for the most part, if not a bit rushed feeling in a lot of places, and that is coming from a current Windows hosting server admin.

Did you disable both IPv6's for Windows and Windows Server? I'm using VMware, whenever I pick Host-only I can't connect to the network and I can't connect the Domain like on 28:28.

@@Ohhh_Ghost I had the same issue, you disable IPv6 for the server. Then when I tried joining the domain on the guest machine I got rid of anything that came after the top level domain (TLD) which is whatever comes after the dot "." i.e "mydomain.local" > "mydomain" and afterwards it ended up working. I dont know if this will be the same for any other TLDs but since mine was ".local" it worked for me. Hope this helps anybody that might run into this issue.

Re-download the iso for windows. I hope it's windows 10 not 11. Than try to install it on the vm.

For those people who ran into same issue where the windows setup did not let you choose which Windows edition to install and autamatically installed windows 10 home on your virtual machine. Here are some workaround I have used. 1. Normally install the windows 10 home edition on your virtual machine. Follow all the instructions and let windows install on its own. 2. Update windows 10. Go to Setting >> Update and Security >> Windows Update. You'll have to restart your virtual machine a few times to complete the process though. 3. After the update, you need to disable your iinternet connection. Go to Control Panel >> Network and Internet >> Network and Sharing Center >> Change adapter settiings >> right click "Ethernet" and click "disable" on the popup. 4. Go to Setting >> Update and Security >> Activation >> Change product key >> TYPE VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T. Usually it'll take you less then 10 minutes to update. Your machine will now restart a few times though. 5. Once the upgrade is done, go to windows powershell, and type irm massgrave.dev/get | iex Press enter Click yes to enable cmd prompt and pick Pick HWID Activation You can now check that wiindows edition change from HOME to PRO in the Activation settiings with activated digital license. REMEMBER to only try this in your VIRTUAL machine and not on your HOST OS.

That's why I tell people to over comptia a+ before doing this because people want to do my lab on a home edition which has limitations. You should know that stuff before watching my videos. This isn't entry level. A+ covers the different operating systems and there limitations. You can't join a home pc to the domain and other stuff won't work.

You won't see Linux in a work environment. The majority of the world runs windows. Only a few places might have jobs like Linux administration but very rare.

I did that to get my vm pc to work so I can join it to the domain on the server. You would need to build an bridge adapter or something else in order to get the two pcs to talk to each other. I kept it as a static ip to make it simple to follow. If you want it on the network, I would use vmware or azure. Virtualbox is not using friendly with setting up networks that are dynamic ip.

Just wanted to add in case anyone COULDNT ADD RSAT TOOLS because you had windows 10 home version. I looked up windows kms keys in the windows 10 vm -> then I used either enterprise or pro product key on (Search: windows kms keys) I Right Clicked settings then in the About tab I clicked: Change product key or upgrade windows then added the product key to use enterprise so I could add the rsat tools in the windows 10 vm I had to do this because I accidentally picked windows home during installation.

Minimum is 2gb ram for windows 10. Adding 4 will stay be slow. I have 8 on windows 10 and 8gb on server 2016. 4gb on a server will either be super slow or crash.

Kev..I'm on part 5 of the playlist, and at the start (when you showed us the help desk account) it's missing on my end. I tried going back a few videos and was confident that I did all the steps. However, 'helpdesk' is missing under the users folder via the Active Directory Users and Computers. After trying to figure out for about an hour, I tried searching for helpdesk on the entire directory like you showed us a few videos back, and it was there. Why would it not show up under the user folder?? It should have all the correct permissions, and I created the user using the copy method (as shown from 11:52 of your part 3 video). Is it b/c it has fallen from the domain due to trust issues or what else could be the case?? I have no clue.

Helpdesk needs to be created on the server 2016 not sure how you did it. I created it on the server not the windows 10 desktop. If the desktop doesn't see it, it's because you have an issue with the domain controller.

How were the 2 computers able to communicate with each other if they are not connected to a router? And even if they have similar subnets don’t they still need a switch to talk? And does the ip they are given factor into whether they can talk(do both the computer ips have to be within this same range ex: 10.0.0.1, 10.0.0.2)?

When I went on the Microsoft link to download from Create Windows 10 installation media, in the installation process by default it will install Windows 10 Home instead of Windows 10 Pro. Did you watched the whole video? I joined it to the domain. It has to be a personal pc for that to work. Organization is when you trying to joined it to the domain in a work environment. It's for demonstration purposes on this video because a lot of people don't know how to join a pc to the domain. It's very common in IT Support.

Brother help please I don't understand I have windows 10 pro but there's no optional features. And the changes settings option also doesn't exist so no way to install RSAT TOOL and join computer to a domain . HELP HELP PLEASE .

love your content as always! quick question: i only have access to active directory on my windows 10 vm when my server 2016 vm is also running (as being able to see the domain name, groups, etc in active directory users and computers) which makes sense, but how am I still able to sign on with, say, the "helpdesk" account from the domain even when server 2016 isn't running? does the account just get saved onto the windows 10 vm or something?

Server 2016 vm needs to run to login to a domain controller. Otherwise you can't login to another pc that has windows 10. You need special permissions to login to server as helpdesk or another account on a server. We normally login on a windows 10 pc for active directory if a company gives you access to it. Some companies give you access to active directory some don't. Depends where you work.

@@KevtechITSupport so you're saying that normally (in a job situation) i'd login to my helpdesk account on windows 10, not on server 2016, i think. which i get. i guess what i'm trying to ask is, how am i able to login to my helpdesk account on my windows 10 vm without my server 2016 vm running? the helpdesk account was created on the server vm so does this mean my windows 10 vm still has login capabilities to accounts from the server even when the server itself isn't running?

Windows 10 is on domain so you need your domain to be on which is server 2016. The user or client needs to authenticate to the domain otherwise you can't login. You will be able to login with cache credentials if the domain is shut off but nothing will work. If you don't understand how a domain works and why server 2016 needs to be on, I suggest you do research.

When I sign in as administrator again and go into ad users & computers I notice that the domain isn't available there. I check the domain in settings and I'm apart of the domain. However when I sign in as helpdesk everything is fine. Is there a reason for that

Nvm. when I brought up ad users & computers I right clicked in the left plane and selected change domain then checked "save this domain setting for the current console"

Hi kevtech, I did everything as you did on my laptop right up till 28:22 as I put in my domain name but however it is telling me my active domain name could not be contacted and that the ip address need to be matching. I put ip addresses the same exact numbers as you and my dns is correct but it’s still not allowing me to continue on. What do I do ?

are you using windows 10 pro version? This is windows 10 pro. Either that or the computer lost connection to the server. Run ipconfig or flush dns.

@Donavin H never said home edition, it won't work on home version. Only work on pro or enterprise. 5:26 I said you need the pro version. Please watch the whole video. You have to start all over again and get a windows pro version.

Windows server has to be on while running windows 10. Otherwise you can't login to the windows 10 vm. Windows Server is your domain. If the server not running, you won't be able to login.

Add a pc to a domain is normally not done manually. Unless you need to fix an issue than you would unjoin and rejoin a pc to the domain.

@@KevtechITSupport ahh that makes sense, i was just taking notes so i could set it all up on my own without a video at some point and was trying to understand the setting a static ip in this video compared to how it would be done in a enterprise. im just assuming in a real environment it would be done with the dhcp auto assigning ip and then the client pc would go to change setting and join the domain that way. i think i have it now lol. ty
