This is going to sound crazy, but when this song came out in the early 1990s my youngest sister said it was her favorite song ever. I remember watching her bounce along to the song whenever it came on the radio, lost in the music. Flash forward about 15 years to the mid-2000s, when she suffered a serious medical event that put her into a coma. As her condition deteriorated the doctors told my parents to prepare for the worst. We literally began making funeral arrangements for her. My mother picked out her burial dress, and I burned a CD to play at her funeral service. This was the song I selected to be played. Not only was it her favorite song, but the lyrics will send a chill up your spine under those circumstances: First you look so strong, then you fade away The sun will blind my eyes, I'll love you anyway Thirsty for your smile, I watch you for a while You are a vapour trail in a deep blue sky The story has a happy ending: my sister eventually recovered from the coma. Although she suffered severe hearing loss and is still legally deaf from the high levels of medications that were administered to save her life, she is alive and well today and continues to love this song. Music has a truly remarkable ability to augment and ultimately transcend the human experience.

Melancholy in crystallized form. This song is easily one of the best to come out of that era. Ride’s song writing and musicianship was head and shoulders above most of their contemporaries and all four guys bring a lot to each song, no one in this band is simply along for the ride(no pun intended).
