The change in his origin story is similar to the change in Mr. Freeze's origin in the original Batman Animated Series. There's actually a lot of parallels to their origins now, but the main difference being that Dr Phosphorus couldn't save his family whereas Victor Fries was in the process of resuscitating his wife. In a way, Dr Phosphorus is Mr Freeze if his wife were killed. The one thing I would have liked them to do better for Dr Phosphorus is to make him a much more calculating person. He's intelligent, he's a doctor, and he actually has empathy unlike the Joker. He seems to have a bit of depth but I feel like he could have been made out to be a much more tactical combatant. Most of what he does is pretty simple and brutish.

So basically, Doctor P in the comics does indeed have the backstory linked to Rupert Throne like in Creature Commandos, with the big difference being that Commandos gave us the murder of Phosphorus’ wife to add extra EXTRA sympathy for him
@socriabbas45423 күн бұрын
Well sympathy is not the word since there's no justification for him to kill both the wife and kids who are both innocent. You could say you can EMPATHIZE but not SYMPATHIZE. Yes, there's a difference.
@godfrey446120 күн бұрын
@@socriabbas454 No I sympathize fully. The kids are innocent, but the wife knew the man she married. She sleeps at night while her monster of a husband rains down fire and brim stone. A fitting end if you ask me.
@williaml84018 күн бұрын
@@socriabbas454 I mean, unless the wife was being insanely willfully ignorant she probably knew her husband was involved in organized crime - obviously that's not remotely enough to justify murdering her but it does make her not entirely innocent. The kids though were definitely innocent.

I think a good angle to go with Dr. phosphorus is that he knows being around others will make them sick from his radio activity, but he’s also deeply lonely and is torn between his need for social contact at his desire not to hurt others with his abilities

I think the best way to deal with this is having a mashup between his comic book origin and the Creature Commandos'. Personally i think both versions aren't really great: the idea of the crooked scientist that blames his problems on everyone but himself can work but for some reason Dr. Phosporous doesn't point his hatred specifically to the people that were even partially responsible for his condition (like Thorne) but the entirety of the Gotham population. On the other hand Gunn's version is yes more tragic but at the same time kinda repetitive (especially in Batman's rogue's gallery) and seems way too apologetic towards him, i get it that they wanted a more "Mr.Freeze" kind of take on the character but trying to do so they made Thorne an over the top moustache twirling villain that literally deals with Nazis (instead of the more refined and realistic take from Englehart's stories) and Phosporous was excused of every bad thing he had done. They should try to mix the two by mantaining the tragic origin but keeping Dr.Phosporous an actual villain since the beginning
@hudsondunn838525 күн бұрын
I get where you are coming from with the repetitive family death but I personally like the James gun version. Most Batman villains lose something and crash out. It’s supposed to give them a parallel to Batman. Him wanting to inflict the same pain he felt to others well pretty standard I think was done pretty well by gun.
@niccoloproia367825 күн бұрын
@hudsondunn8385 I can understand that but it seems to me that this version of Dr.Phosphorus takes way too many aspects from characters like Mr.Freeze and Man-Bat (with a pinch of Black Mask): - you have the sympathetic and well meaning scientist with a family aspect from Mr.Freeze - the fact that curing cancer was Sartorius' main goal due to the fact that this disease could affect him directly just like Kirk Langstrom (Man-Bat)'s research - the skeleton look with a business suit that takes from Black Mask My main problem with Gunn's depiction of Dr. Phosphorus, as i said before, is that he basically turned Thorne into a cartoonish bad guy that deals with Nazis (that could work in his universe since i doubt he would have ever used Rupert Thorne in a Batman movie but not in comics since Thorne is a way more interesting and complex character in those) in order to depict Alex more as a victim than he truly is, i find so strange that in a city like Gotham (especially with Bruce Wayne around) you have a guy that says that he can create a cure for cancer and that can show enough proof to convince a guy like Thorne of his capabilities and yet the only one interested in backing up Alex is a crime lord. Even if emotionally weaker the Englehart's original version of Dr. Phosphorus origin makes much more sense
@hudsondunn838521 күн бұрын
@@niccoloproia3678 I don't know. Mr Freeze still has a wife who is alive. Dr Phosphorus can't save his family he really is a SKELETON of who he once was.
@niccoloproia367821 күн бұрын
@hudsondunn8385 i mean can you really describe Nora as alive? Both Nora and the Gunn's version of Phosphorus' family serve the same purpose: give the villain a tragic backstory that involves their family
@hudsondunn838520 күн бұрын
@ I mean yeah. Since Nora can be brought out of cyrosleep she can be brought back, therefore all of Mr Freeze's acts forwards his goal of saving his wife. Dr Phosphorus crashed out, nothing he does brings his wife back, and therefore his motivations are more self serving.
