I tried to remove two chucks today after watching this and it was a no go. The drill would just spin when I hit the Allen wrench. I used a hammer about the size of yours (3 or 4lb I believe). Between the chuck and drill body there were a space to put a thin wrench. I made a quick wrench out of out 10 gauge bar stock and then was able to remove the chuck. They were on there VERY tight, no way they would have come off otherwise. I had a 24" breaker bar on the hex socket in teh chuck!

Worked perfectly for me on my craftsman 19.2V drill. I used a dead-blow hammer instead. I'm curious why you say to put it in "high" range - that allows the chuck to apply more torque to the motor, and the motor provides less lock-up / braking action. Despite that, it worked fine, and it seems like it might be less likely to damage the drive-train...

On your first chuck in the video, I think my screw head is already broken off. So, should I still be able to remove the chuck using roughly the same technique you showed? It looks to me like you use the water pump pliers to break the head off the screw/bolt anyway, so I'm thinking I just need the extra torque to remove the chuck and replace it. My chuck is working fine for now, but I expect that I may have problems if that retaining screw is broken off already.

My double sleeve chuck has no screw to remove. There are flutes inside the chuck, down near the threads that a T-40 Torx will engage, but it would require a long T-40 with a handle--a Torx bit wouldn't work. What do I do now?

The second one you did (DW 972?) was done AFTER you removed the bolt. Problem is, the bolt head is worn out from (previous attempts at removal?) and can't be done the way you show.... I don't think. So how do you remove the chuck with the bolt still in it? Or, can you?
@kennethdandurand34725 жыл бұрын
Got it. Had to drill out the bolt with a 3/16th bit and then used a 3/8 to get the top part out. Got lucky in that when I used the 3/8 bit it backed the screw completely out. The Large allen wrench worked like a champ with very little hitting of it.

Thanks for the video. My Dewalt got a rusted chuck and the plastic part just went round and round! I cut the plastic off and got the chuck to work again but its a bit dangerous having the chuck jaws sticking out of the back. IMHO the Jacobs, the Rohm and the Fein chucks are all very good but the Made in China DIY grades are not so good. BTW is the chuck thread 1/2" NF20?

I have had a problem getting the screw out of the chuck since it is trapped behind the fingers of the chuck itself. someone thought it would be funny if they backed the screw out partway and then tighten the chuck as hard as they could onto it. I cant turn the screw or loosen the tension on the chuck.

the chuck on my drill just spins freely, sowhen I I insert the allen wrench, and hit it with a hammer, it just spins freely, no resistance, and the chuck never loosens, Yes I have removed the screw, but the chuck will not loosen, the chuck and shaft spin freely, what do you suggest (thow it out?) I want to keep this keyless chuck and put it on a new keyed drill.

try opening chuck all the way, tightening 3/8 inch allen wrench, then put chuck in drill mode. chuck will still turn, however hitting allen wrench with hammer provides sudden torque impulse to overcome tension holding chuck onto threaded shaft.

Don't think it would have worked with my $40 Ryobi corded drill. Chuck seized, couldn't put an allen wrench in it. Didn't have a screw, instead some kind of weird permanent looking metal fastener. Took off case, seemed designed to be difficult to service. Returned it barely within its return period, got my money back.

I’m going to use an old drill to drive a worm gear for use in an antenna rotator project I'm working on for KZbin and although I found the left-hand threaded bolt in the chuck I was trying to pull the chuck off, I was thinking it would be on a hexagon or something like that. There are many reasons to replace a chuck, but usually it has to do with either the chuck not opening or closing right, or the teeth get broken.
@williamgray94728 жыл бұрын
You don't need to break that locking screw!!!! It's a left hand thread. Mine is a #25 or so TORX head. Turn it off opposite of normal, then you can reuse it and don't have to deal with removing the stub from the chuck, which might be real bad to get out.

Big problem breaking the screw off for the single sleeve. After all, if you can't get that thing out with a T20, no way in hell you're going to get it out by cutting a slot and removing it with a screwdriver.

Sometimes with some of these "helps" you have to take them with a grain of salt. I've recently had a bit holder stuck in the chuck and I've hit it from the top, I've fucked it from the right and I've buggered it from the left and it still wouldn't budge. So why be a big angry bear and go down to the tool shop and get a new chuck replaced for AUD$30 all up. I got a keyed chuck (Metabo). You can get a ratchet (turn it on hard and then take it back a notch). So it's all sunflowers and rose petals until next time...
