I still blame the FCC for that travesty! If they had settled on a standard and made it mandatory for radio manufacturers to adopt it, instead of letting the marketplace decide, we would still have current music on AM. My personal opinion: C-Quam’s AM Stereo was the best system that was available. It sounded just a good, even better than FM.

It's not the mic compression, it's the station's processing. This audio was recorded from the air monitor.

The mics were shotgun type, not omni so very little proximity effect. Then, there was multi-band limiting between the mics and the consoles, then the best homebrew 4-band limiter ever built (home made crossovers into split PR&E Multi-Limiters, then a homebrew combiner) then over the STLs to an Orban 9100 at the transmitter.

I think this was 1984 and not 1983, because there are some songs that were released in early '84 as singles: 1) Huey Lewis & The News - "I want a new drug" 2) Lionel Ritchie - "Hello" 3) Pointer Sisters - "Automatic" 4) Eurythmics - "Here comes the rain again".

"Automatic" by the Pointer Sisters was released as a 7-inch in January 1984, even as "I Want a New Drug". And also "Here Comes the Rain Again" was released in January 1984. So I think, the Video was taken in the first month of 1984.

Billy Darley, I turned 18 in 1980. I was in college in the 80s and was a total top 40 radio addict from 1973 on. Then came MTV in 1982 and it was true that "Video Killed the Radio Star." But then the internet & KZbin (I guess?) killed MTV. I miss it all...top 40 radio and MTV when it played only music vids. You can envy me for experiencing the 70s and 80s. I'm truly happy I was alive for it, but now I'm 56 and I'd rather be 35 like you. The 90s were ok. Things didn't deteriorate until 2001.

@@georgejunak7466 you go WAY back George. Question to you: Do you know if there's still existence of that new years eve 1979-1980 marathon radio broadcast of 'Best of the 70's', which said goodbye, and hello to the 80s? I'd say it was a 11 to 12-hour program, which took the top 10 songs of each year in the 70s. I'm guessing it was an ABC Radio special....or NBC....CBS...?? Any clues? It was a great broadcast, and I'm trying to find it.
