The history of the Turks can be traced back to the first millennium BCE. Slowly but steadily, they migrated from Northern Asia into large parts of the Northern Hemisphere - sometimes voluntarility, but mostly out of wars and climatic catastrophes. For the longest time, those people that belonged to the Turkic culture group were scattered across all of the Eurasian Steppe belt. Finally, in 552 CE, the chief of the Ashina Tribe BUMIN overthrew the then-supreme Rouran overlord in Mongolia and created his own state, the empire of the GÖK TÜRKS. Many military campaigns of these "Celestial Turks" resulted in the expansion of the Göktürk borders to the Korean borderlands in the East, the Ukrainian Steppe and Crimea in the West, Afghanistan and the gates to Iran in the south. Alliances with the Byzantine Empire and the Sogdians enabled a stunning victory over Sassanid Persia, while in the east the newly established T'ang Dynasty was nearly annihilated by Turkic forces in the Chinese capital. But a prolonged Civil War had left traces of distrust in-between the Ashina Dynasty and the empire's core tribes. Within a few years, the empire suddenly collapsed. Many Ashina Turks were forcefully relocated from the Altai Mountains in Central Asia - mythical birth region of the Turkic peoples - to Northern China where they came under supervision of Chinese authorities. Severaö rebellions, including that of a certain KÜRSHAD, failed. Their new Chinese overlords decided upon Turkic matters. But in 681 CE, an Ashina prince named KUTLUK dared another revolt. Like his ancestor Bumin 130 years prior, Kutluk managed to break the chains of the Ashina once again. Together with 700 companions, he conducted forty successful military campaigns into Central Asia and China to establish the Second Göktürk Empire.
Unlike the first empire of Bumin, Kutluk's realm was rather limited. He became the first KHAGAN in nearly 50 years, and thus had to re-establish the Ashina's predominance over the many tribes of the Eurasian steppe. Under his successors, the new Göktürk Empire re-gained ground up to the Aral Sea in the West, Lake Baikal in the North and parts of the Tarim Basin in the south. Kutluk became known as ILTERISH: gatherer of the lands. His brother KAPGAN cemented the Turks' supremacy even against the mighty Chinese Empire of Empress Wu, playing her out against the Mongolic Khitan and Kumo Xi tribes. At last, when BILGE KHAGAN ascended to the throne in 734 CE, Göktürk rule should have been secured, the borders of the empire being far away from ÖTÜKEN, the mysterious forest-capital on the Orkhon River. But instead, Bilge was faced with revolting tribes. Both Turkic and non-Turkic peoples did not accept his rule. Therefore, he had to repeat his father's campaigns of conquest. While Bilge Khan successfully subjugated them, he was constantly busy with keeping the empire together. The vicious cycle of never-ending revolts as well es new tribal leaders aspiring to create their own steppe empires aggravate the downfall of the Göktürks in 745 CE.
This is the third film of a trilogy dedicated to the history of the Celestial Turks. Featuring stunning visuals from the Steppe, China, Korea, Persia, Türkiye and other places, as well as an Original Soundtrack, a 3D reconstruction of Bilge Khan in Unreal Engine/Metahuman and parts of interviews that were conducted with two scholars of history, it is the biggest project of KHAN's DEN to date. Being the first collaboration, too, this documentary hopefully will bring more attention to a people that have long been forgotten, but deserve recognition both in academia as well as the general public. This is true especially for the societies of the modern Turkic republics, from Türkiye to Kazakhstan, from Azerbaijan to Kyrgyzstan, and from Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to the many autonomous republics of the Yakuts, Gagauz and Tatars.
After all, only those who know their past can determine their future ...

"History of the Suí dinasty", chapter 84: The superiority of the Göktürks is in their cavalry and archers. When they are in a winning position, they advance with fury; but when danger comes, they withdraw with the speed of the wind, and disappear like lightning, without preserving order. Bows and arrows serve them as claws and fangs. Helmet and cuirass are their usual attire. Their detachments do not go in order, their camps do not stand still. They stop wherever they find grass and water; rams and horses provide food for their army. If they win, they stop and seek the wealth of the enemy; if they are defeated, they withdraw without any shame. They do not burden themselves with night duty, nor do they keep watch during the day; they do not waste their strength in building fortifications, or in storing provisions. But when Chinese soldiers go to war, they [Göktürks] behave very differently. If the Chinese enter the battle with the Göktürks, they [Chinese] rarely win. If we begin to imitate them now, if we adapt to their means, they will not be able to overcome us, and they will not attack us again. - Emperor Yang of Suí

hahahaha. Three of the five dynasties founded by the Turks during the era of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms say the opposite. The Turkic Kaganate fell only because of the civil war, like all Turkic states. And the second Turkic Khaganate fell only because other Turkic Uighurs entered into an alliance with the Chinese and defeated the Gokturks. Your Yang Sui was clearly a Turkophobe. China was rarely ruled by the Chinese themselves, China was ruled by many Nomad dynasties. The Turks ruled China, Egypt, Persia and India. They also created many of their own states outside the Great Steppe. We only lost in the modern era

Hi Emre I saw your post lamenting not getting many views despite the work you've put in. It's a very interesting documentary to anyone wanting to learn about people's of the steppe and their place in world history but the one weak point of the documentary, in my opinion, is the narration. The narrator has a nice enough voice but it just sounds like his enthusiasm is fake and the cadence is repetitive and not natural. The content is very interesting but it's not nearly as enjoyable to listen to as it should be because it sounds like it is being presented by someone who doesn't care about the topic. I apologize if I'm wrong and I don't mean to offend the narrator. I only say this in case it could be helpful criticism to help the channel grow

Initially dubbed in historical sources as the Turks of Shatuo circuit (Shatuo Tujue), occasional references to the "three tribes" of Shatuo-the Shatuo, Anqing, and Yinge-suggest the existence of multiple confederations, the Shatuo ascent coinciding with the decline of the Eastern Turks in the eighth century. Their armies were surpris ingly small relative to other minority rulers of China over the past millennium, but Shatuo warriors seemed uniquely "brave and aggressive," courage in battle buttressed by an enviable expertise in siege warfare and archery. Indeed, the arrows of a skilled bowman could pierce the shield of any foe." Davis, R., 2017. Fire and ice. Li Cunxu and the founding of the Later Tang. Hong Kong: Hong Kong University Press, p.4.

Hello, I'm very very rarely commenting on KZbin in general, even if I'm using it from 2010. I'm very happy that a docummentary of this level and this quality was produced about Turks. I also released a docummentary in French some years ago : kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3vHk6B_h7xkoa8 (not about the same topic and the same quality, English captions avalaible), and I'm really happy to see that your channel is serious. It's very common in Turkology to have out-of-topic arguments or narratives. But you are keeping it serious and accurate 99% of the time. Thank you for this. It makes me wanna finish my book about the geopolitics of the Transeurasian world from Xinglongwa culture to present. By the way, I have some knowledge about Transeurasian peoples in general and I would be happy to be in contact with you to share it. Do you have any SNS that you are active on ?

Altai was not the capital of the first Turkic Khaganate, it was Otuken as well, not sure where you got that info. "When the Turks and the Uighurs defeated the Ruanruan in 552 the centre of the newly formed state was shifted to Mongolia because the narrow valley and the Altai steppe, with poor winter pasture, could not ensure fodder for the large herds of the numerous aristocracy. Therefore as before and from that time on for larger military and administrative unions of nomads Mongolia became the seat of the ruling aristocracy, in the eastern parts of Central Asia. The broad steppe on the high plateau of Mongolia was better suited for the purpose... In the Zhou-shu we can read that the Turks made sacrifices at the Tamir every year and that the kaghan had his seat at Dujin shan; both places are on Mongolian territory."

Not sure what source that is from but the Uigurs absolutely did NOT fight with the Ashina against the Rouran. That is plain wrong. Perhaps the source is mixing the Uigurs (Dokuz Oguz) up with the Tiele, as they used to be part of the latter. Various sources state that both Mukhan and Istemi used to dwell on the „Golden Mountain“, and the descriptions e.g. by Zemarchus clearly point to the Altay Mountains. During the Göktürk Civil War, Chinese sources further describe the devastation in and around the Altay, where the Ashina were fighting over control of their headquarters.

@@KhansDen The source is Lumir Jisl, an archaeologist who worked in Mongolia and was the one who found Kul Tegin's bust. The book is 'The Orkhon Türks and Problems of the Archaeology of the Second Eastern Türk Kaghanate' it is available for free online as a PDF. Uyghurs were part of the Tiele, and that is what Lumir Jisl means. Mukan ruled the khaganate, residing in the eastern part, while Istemi as yabgu ruled in the west. I would like to see your sources that claim that the Altai was the centre of the first Turkic Khaganate. Otuken as a place was sacred to the nomads of that region for millennia, and it was not only the most fertile region in that region, but also the geographic centre of that region, the middle of nomad territory, so it was a politically strategic area to rule from and control.

The Gokturks united all the tribes and called them all Turks. First you should learn what nationalism is, what tribalism is and what the differences are. This is not a problem of history but of your understanding. Which of the peoples, all of whom speak Turkish, can you say that this is not Turkish? Go back to your village, child.

If they were Mongols, why did they call themselves Turk? And why did they fight almost exclusively against either Chinese or Mongol tribes instead of against other Turkic tribes? Why did they speak and write in Turkic instead of Mongolian? Questions about questions.

Actually, the culprit is Secularism and not Islam. When the Turks were true to Islam they ruled a mighty empire which included half of Europe. The moment they began to bow to secularism was the moment their empire came crumbling down.

İşte bu nedenle Türk tarihi dünyada pek bilinmiyor. Çünkü hala Türklerin her şeyi kendilerine saklamaları gerektiği zihniyeti hakimdir.

@tursuntongra6706

@@shrektheintelllectual3615 1. During the Khaganates time frame and prior, term Türk refers only to Türks (a separate ethnic group if you apply modern terminology), other contemporary Turkic groups such as Qirghiz, Uyghurs, Qipchaqs, Oghuz did not consider themselves to be Türks. Groups such as Qarluqs were related to Türks but that's another story. Term Türk became an exoethnonym sometime after the Khanatates, and was applied by the Chinese, Persians, Byzantines, Arabs and others to refer 'generally' to peoples of Steppe origin. That is how the term "Türk" stuck with Turkic peoples who were not Türks. And these are not my words but Peter Goldens. Obviously this fact is omitted to paint a romantic nationalist picture of Türks giving birth to all these modern Turkic groups. 2. "Religion" - Tengrism - no such thing, no serious scholar talks about it, it is all made up. This Tengrist agenda is mostly a reaction to islamic resurgence that began in Turkey and spread to other Turkic countries. It is all modern political stuff, has nothing to do with history. Basically anywhere you poke, there's high likely likelihood of that part being ahistorical. but still better than those Turkish 'historical' tv shows which are completely made up from bottom up.
