Homeland. Folk. Nation. What meaning do these terms have in our present day?
In some countries, they seem like relics of ancient times. But in others, they are ubiquitous in politics and society. One of these countries is Turkey. The reason for this is rooted in its past. Like any great civilization, the history of the early Turks began small and unremarkable. They had to fight for freedom before they even became visible on the world stage as a united ethnic group. But their origins do not lie in Anatolia, which they have inhabited for a millennium, but deep in the heart of Asia. They should go down in the history books as the founders of Turkic identity...
It all began with a tribe that has long been forgotten: the Ashina. This clan of either Hunnic or Wusun origin consisted of people who had fled from an invasion of Chinese armies, and had to rebuild their home in the Altay Mountains. Their story is also the reason for the emigration of the Turks from Central Asia to Europe and the Middle East. Soon the Ashina mingled with the surrounding Turkic tribes. In the process, they learned metallurgy and the art of war, and planned their retaliation. But they remained vassals of more powerful empires.
Two brothers, politically educated and militarily experienced, took over the leadership of the tribe and started a revolution. They rebelled against the Mongol and Chinese feudal lords of the time and led their family to political and economic independence for the first time in generations. In doing so, they mobilized that strength that had always lain dormant deep in the steppe, leading women and men alike into battle. A distinctive feature of the Ashina was that, although they themselves were of mixed ethnic origin, they explicitly cultivated the Turkic language and traditions.
In a very short time, they also broke the chains of all other tribes that spoke what is known today as the Common Turkic language, and expanded in all directions as the Turks' new leaders. Within a few years, long before the Ottomans and Seljuks, the Ashina created a Turkic empire - the Khaganate - that stretched from Korea and Manchuria in Asia to the Crimean Peninsula in Europe. Their empire became even larger than that of the Ottomans a millennium later. They gave themselves the name "Turk". For the first time in history, a state was inhabited as well as ruled by Turks.
But these new lords of the steppe were different from the Huns before and the Mongols after them. The Göktürks were not only hospitable, but also extremely tolerant towards other cultures. Their rulers invoked ancient Turkic traditions and Tengrism, the original religion and life philosophy of the Turkic peoples, and did not stop at the usual borders of the Eurasian steppe. Byzantines, Persians, Koreans and Chinese had to deal with young and eager warriors who used both military power and diplomatic skills. This is their rise to power.
With the addition of the latest historical and archaeological research results and after evaluation of ancient sources, the history of these "heavenly Turks" ("Gök" stands for "heaven" in Turkic) is now told in detail for the first time in English
Lastly, this documentary has been produced for all those who are interested in the origin of the Turks, but also in the history of the steppe nomads of Asia before the Mongols; for those who are interested in Tengrism; and finally for all people who are concerned with the question of what "homeland" really means.

You should, however, still understand everything that's going on. Further comments: As I mentioned in the film, this is not about genetics. It is common knowledge today that the inhabitants of the Republic of Turkey are genetically very mixed. The influence of immigrants from Central Asia and the Caucasus is measurable, but to a greater or lesser extent, depending on the study. And as a student of history, I don't want to presume, unlike some other KZbinrs, to analyze such incredibly complex genetic studies myself. There is also no need for anyone to speak of a "great Turkish race" here. Turkish is defined - at least it was in the past - NOT by ancestry, but by faith, language and tradition. Before someone wants to denounce this here, it should therefore be mentioned that the exaltation of one's own culture did not exist, for example, among the Göktürks. Of course, the Turks were proud of themselves and their achievements. But they always remained open to other cultures, to other religions even. That's why I mentioned the term hospitality and explained Tengrism in detail, it was an allusion to that fact. The fact that people who share the same culture are sympathetic to each other and want to get together is self-explanatory. On the other hand, I would not click on a video about the history of Germanic tribes in antiquity, and tell the Germans watching in the that they are not 100% descended from the Germanic. Nobody descends 100% from any folk, any tribe. There has always been mixing among cultures, almost everywhere. In making this documentary, I was concerned with a completely different question: where does Turkish come from in the first place? Where do the traditions come from? The national spirit of the Turks did not come into being only yesterday, nor a hundred years ago with the founding of the republic. But it is closely linked to the identity of defining oneself as a Turk. When Atatürk introduced the saying "He is happy who can call himself a Turk!", he did not invent the idea behind it. This idea was already there before and "brought to life" again. Of course, there are many overlaps between the Turks of Anatolia and the surrounding peoples. However, some elementary cultural items are of distinct Turkic Asian origin. Not everything can be explained by the adoption of local cultures in "pre-Turkish" Anatolia or the adoption of Islam. There is no need to argue now whether the Greeks or Turks invented some certain type of cheese or bewerage. These are trifles that completely ignore the important questions of world history. In any case, the question of how Turkish culture developed - and especially why it gradually "migrated" to Anatolia - drove me to do some research. And after years of self-study, this film came into being. Of course, the story of the Gök Turks is also very exciting on its own, and unfortunately is told far too rarely in any type of media. But after their downfall, in the year 630, their story went even further. That's when the migratory movements by Turkic tribes westward really began. And even if the common theme may seem rather thin at first, it is clearly visible with the arrival of the Seljuks in Anatolia in the 11th century. One thing led to another. The Turkic peoples fought and migrated. They settled, then were attacked or attacked others themselves, and migrated again. It was partly a never-ending state of war that had begun after the fall of the Göktürks, which lead to the formation of the Oguz. The Oguz tribes then settled in Anatolia and founded the dozens of Turkish beyliks, one of these being the famous Ottomans. These many wars gave rise to a kind of "national spirit" over the centuries, long before the emergence of European nation-states from the 18th century onwards. It would be certainly interesting for people who are not of Turkish origin to understand why. You have to start somewhere, so I chose the Göktürks as a starting point. Ruling dynasties that spoke Common Turkic and believed in Tengri existed prior to the Ashina, sure. But firstly, in 552, the term Turk first became visible in world politics, and secondly, as a designation for a particular ethnic group, it was solidified for all times despite any cultural fluctuations. Further notes: 1. the sources and literature used can be found in the Google document, the link to it is in the description. This document is like a Word file on the PC, but everyone can look at it for free on the Internet. If you have any questions, please write a comment there or email me via denofthekhan@gmail.com. 2. this movie is based on a book I am writing. It will cover the years 545 to 630 of Turkic history and will explain everything in much more detail than I could have done within 90 minutes on KZbin. 3. I apologize for the presentation of the maps, I am not an expert in animation. 4. the last chapter was added at the VERY last minute. Therefore, the quality is not as high as at the beginning of the film. 5. tengrism was of course the religion of the ancient Asian Huns of Teoman and Maotun, the Huns of Attila and also the Mongols of Genghis Khan. But it was the Göktürks who first appeared in Europe and the Middle East as rulers "appointed by Tengri". In this respect, they played an important part in the rise of Tengrism from a rather polytheistic faith to a monotheistic religion with a claim to dominate the world. Genghis Khan built his rule on it 700 years later. Incidentally, the Mongols literally built their capital exactly at the same place from where the Göktürks had once ruled: Ötüken. 6. You may have noticed that I have used exciting music, cool action scenes in some scenes of the documentary. Well... who would watch a 90-minute doc about Julius Caesar without any action, without any sort of suspense, without real direction on the part of the producers? Probably only hardcore history nerds and enthusiasts. But since I want to address all people with this video, including those who are unfamiliar with Turkic history, this decision had to be made. 7. This film is the first part of a trilogy. Currently I am working on the translations (Turkish, French, Japanese...) of part 1 and on the script for part 2. Connoisseurs of Turkic history know what comes next....

As a Chinese, I’ve been fascinated by the intricate relations between China and Turk in the history. What China did to weaken Turks who were a powerful northern neighbour at the time in the Tang dynasty (618~907), was recorded especially in the Sui dynasty (581~618) official history. It would be quite amusing to read details in regard to how success that the Chinese boasted using “divide and rule” in Turks. Ends justify means. The rest is history. The Turks, warriors on the steppe, suddenly disappeared from the Chinese history just like the Huns. Then the Turks were a a small part of Mongolian army as iron-smith. Finally the Turks created an Ottoman empire in Anatolia in their own. What a magnificent story! The phoenix reborn from ashes. This document is the best about Gokturks in Yourtube.

You are probably not very familiar with the history of the Turkic peoples. The Turks did not disappear anywhere as you say, on the contrary, the Turks actively ruled over most of Eurasia for almost thousands of years until 1800-1900 The Turks led by Attila were defeated by the army of the Roman Empire and their descendants are considered today's Hungary. The Turks created the Khazar Kaganate, the Bulgar Kaganate, the Avar Kaganate, the Uyghur Kaganate, and the Karluk Kaganate. The Turks created the Ghaznavid Empire, the Karakhanid states, and the Seljuk Empire, which defeated the Byzantine Empire. The Turks created the Khorezmshah Empire. The last Khorezmshah Sultan Jalal ad Din stubbornly resisted the Mongol invasion. The Cuman Turks actively fought against the Mongols. The Mamluk state, led by the Turk Sayfutdin Kutuz, who was from the Khorezmshah family, was finally defeated by the Mongol army in the Battle of Ainjalut. The Ottoman Turks created the Ottoman Empire, and other Turks led by Amir Temur (Tamerlane) created the Timurid Empire. The Turks created the Safavid state, a Turk one of the descendants of Tamerlane named Muhammad Babur on the territory of Pakistan, India created the Baburid Empire (Mughal Empire) and ruled over India and Pakistan for 332 years before the English conquest) Crimean Khanate, Kazan Khanate, states of the Nomadic UzbeksBukhara Khanate,In the 19th century in Central Asia, the Uzbek Turks had three states: the Kokand Khanate, the Bukhara Emirate, the Khiva Khanate, which Tsarist Russia occupied and from the three former Uzbek states they drew five republics that now exist and Uzbekistan Turkmenistan Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan isTurkic state. The Turks also ruled over Afghanistan for 700-800 years.

All my gratitude for this great documentary. I was born askhenazy jewish but within my heart I felt at early age that this was not my people. When I learned about the Khazars and how they converted to judaism and that their original religion was Tengriism, I began to search about my origins. I found a photo of my grand-grand father who looks like a central asian person, with slanting eyes and large cheeks. I also found the Ashina clan as others Turks did. When I talked about these origins to my family or other jews they became angry. I asked what made them so angry, because as for me, I find my ancestors gods and godesses beautiful to worship because they are Earth related. Today, I continue to pray to kök Tengri every day and I do my best to not harm any being. Thank you very very much for your beautiful work on our ancestors.

Hello Ann. It is truly wonderful to read such sentences. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this interesting insight! I hope that one day, the "truth" does come out. I don't mean this in a conspiracy-kind of way. But there are many aspects with regards to the Turkic-Jewish relations and the Khazars, that it always bothered me how little attention these topics recieved by historians worldwide. There is more in play than just genetics, though. Thus, this documentary was made. It may not be much, but it's a first step. Now, it is unfortunate that your family reacted this way, but all the more great that you kept your path! May Tengri and Umay bless you and give you fortune and eternal life.

Askenazi Jews are not the biblical Israelites. Israelites are from Sem and the Middle East. Askenaz is from Yaphet and Central Asia. Many Turkic tribes converted to Biblical and Koranic monotheism when they settled in urban and agricoltural societies, kingdoms and empires. Some Mongols did the same. Magyars and Bulgars became Christians when they settled in Europe and mixed with Slavic tribes. Many Oghuz Turkic tribes became Muslim because they stayed in Central Asia, Western Asia and South Asia where the Arabs where expanding and conquering. For the Khazars is the same, when they settled in East Europe they choose the religion of the Jews to be neutral, because they where between Christianity and Islam, so they dicided to adopt that religion to be outside that conflict and keep their central position in the trading routes between East-West and North-South. Later when the Khazar Khaganate disappeared they mixed with Slavic and Germanic peoples and kept the Jewish faith and through centuries they became Askenazi Jews which means German or European Jews. Ashina-Askenaz. PEACE.

@@iskambillordu Hello. The meaning of the word Oghuz is still not fully resolved. Moreover, the Uyghurs have 10 tribes. One of the tribes is named Hu-wu-suu in Chinese documents. Perhaps this tribe founded the 24 Oghuzs. Because the Arab traveler mervezi says that the Turks are 12 tribes. Of these, 3 tribes are called Guz, 9 tribes are 9 Oghuz and Uyghurs. But that sentence there is very thought provoking. He says that instead of mixing with the Chinese, the Uyghurs are mixing with the Oghuzs. From here, we can think that the Uyghurs were compared to the Chinese by the Arab historians because of their squint.

Hello! Thanks for your job! I'm Erlan Espenbetov and I'm a teacher and researcher of old turkic runes and states from Kaganica center. As a Turkic runes Teacher I just tell you that the term Ashina didn't mean in Old Turkic monuments but it has only Chinese chronicles. Even Chinese and many others scientists states that Ashina is connected with the most ancient Turkic union- Wusun (Uysin) The term "Uysin" in Old Turkic languages has 2 meaning: 1) Union, Unity 2) a Code (look like Japanese Busido) 3) the Yassa code also descended from the Uysin Code At that time the Nomads who followed this code and believed Tengri could call themselves as Uysin Nearly all scientists states that Xiongnu (huns) and Wusuns are the one and the the same people. This is confirmed by common origin legends and culture in general. The Wusuns were the core of all turkic Nomadic Empires: - the first turkic Khaganate - the western turkic Khaganate - Turges Khaganate - Khazars - the Genghis khans Empire - The Golden Horde - Moghulistan - and then Kazakh, Kazan, Crimean, Uzbek, Noghay Khaganates The descendants of Wusuns still live among the modern nations such as Kazakhs, Noghays, Bashkirs, Kirghiz, Uzbek Karakalpak, Uyghurs, Tatars and they have the next clans: Sary uysin (Yellow Uysins also called Türges) Jalair Dulat Alban Suan Shapyrashty Ysty Oshaqty Qatagan Sirgeli Tabyn Karay Irekty Ramadan Unlar Bağanaly In generally they live in South-Eastern Kazakhstan (near Almaty city). Ancient Turks(Torgwar) from the early Han( ~2nd century AD) days to early Tang(late 7th century~) days, were one of the most influential allies to Goguryeo. Whether it be mercenaries or reinforcements sent by the Khahan, the Turks kept various Chinese at bay until the Goguryeo finally succumbed to their demise in 668. But similar to Gok Turks, it was their internal strife that led them to be conquered by the Tangs. But 30 years later, Dae Jo Young, a Goguryeo general, founds Balhae which would go on for another 200 years before getting conquered by the Khitans. Even though Turkey is geographically far from Korea, the average Korean likes Turks much much more than their neighbors--the Chinese and Japanese^^

Indeed. The history of Turkco-Korean relations is most interesting. It especially becomes tense during the Ashina family's service in the T'ang military against their former allies of Goguryeo. This will be one of the topics of the next film that is in production right now. So stay tuned :-)

Korean General worked for Tang invaded Afghanistan. Meaning ppl travel one end to others. Tang was also found by Dongyi ppl. Any ppl from central Asian countries can master Korean in a year. Current China is controlled by Southerner, Han tribe. Han tribe lived in south. They are changing history and making Altai history as theirs. Bull shit. From Turk to north east asia had Silk road and ppl travel freely by horse. Silk road wasnt belong to China. Chinese are making up story to justify their current territory. Peking never was Han tribe's capital. It was capital city of Dongyi people. Dongyi people are Mongos, Koreans,Huns, Japanese, and Manzulia. More than half of So call Chinese empires are Dongyi people. Most of Chinese history belong to Dongyi tribe. Around Peking there are so many artifacts from Gogurye. Name of town to mountain, sea Ports, Walls, tombs and castles carried Gogurye name and Currently Chinese govt has been changing names to make their own. Now they says Korea was part of their history. So they own the history of Korea is bullshit. Yes Korea had lots of relationships with China mostly Dongyi dynasty. Huns and Gogurye joined attacked Song dynasty. Many Dongyi countries joined and fought Han tribes dynasty and occupied China for thousands of years until recently by Han tribe. Last Chines empire was found by Koreans as well. Manzu should return to Korea. Japanese and Chines decided Chinese take over Manzu and Japanese take over Korea in 19 century. China should return Manzu to Korea. That is one of the reason Red China is helping North Korea to create internal friction in Korea.

The Problem is , is that if you are a Turk it's more than likely that these weren't your ancestors, more likely the Hittites. Turkey is a melting pot of ethnicities, only a small percentage would be able to trace ancestors to these people. Today Turk means being a national of Turkey, not an ethnic Turk. If you are a Turk national, your history is great but it's the ancient History of Anatolia.

There is a difference however between direct lineage and identity. The Turk identity used to be like that of the Romans. Under certain circumstances, a anyone could become a member of the Turkic community, but not everyone. It is only in modern times that one’s identity is built sorely on their own direct ancestors, which is of course not wrong per se but does rob certain parts of national identity. I have actually made a video about how the direct ancestors of todays Turks are the Hittites, but that the culture has nothing to do with the Hittites at all. Think of it like the Americans. Sure, almost 99 Percent of Americans can not trace their lineage back to Native Americans but Europe, Africa or Asia. But they are still proud to be Americans and see themselves in the tradition of the state founding Americans of Washington, Jefferson etc. It was exactly like this during Antiquity and the Middle Ages for the Turkic people.

Khans of that region are the Hazaras, not Pashtuns. Of course there must be some Pashtuns who were originally Hazara descendants but even Hazaras themselves do not speak Turkic anymore. It's just a legacy now. Did you know, Turks fought by tooth and nail to protect todays Afghanistan/Pakistan region from Islam and pretty much achieved that until Persian muslims spread the religion more peacefully/philosophically over decades? It is insane even to think about, since now their grandchildren are hardcore Islamists and forgot who they were completely. That applies pretty much each Turkic group out there including us in Anatolia, we are different people now than those Turks. Some got assimilated into Christianity in the west, Judaism and obviously Islam. As the saying goes; "There is no other nation in the world who invents fairy tales as well as the Arabs, tells this tale as well as the Persians, and believes in this tale as much as the Turks." - Mirza Fetali Ahundov - Yes we didn't bow to anyone but ourselves my guy, just think about it.

I love your film! My mother is from Altay, that is one of the most beautiful places on Earth! She is from Altay Republic in Russia, she is Kazakh of Naiman tribe. I just want to point out to a small error in you story. The mountain in Tyan-Shan is called Khan Tengri (Khan Tengre in Kazakh and Kyrgyz), not Tengri Khan. It is made of two words: 'khan' - blood and 'Tengri' - God. So literary it means Bloody God. It is called like that because it turns red at sun set. It looks so chilling at that time that people have superstitious awe about it.

Hi Khan's Den, thanks for creating this video about the history of the Göktürk Khanate. Ever since I started watching the Turkish TV series Destan (set in 8th century Central Asia), my mind has become more curious about the Göktürks and the early Turkic peoples in Central Asia: the peoples, histories, and cultures. I find it all fascinating but at the same time, for sure life wasn't at all easy for the people living in ancient times.

@@tugsuufre Hi there. just wanted to correct you as you are incorrect with your statement as the Turkic identity and name did not arise after the migration to the west. The name Turk was given to the first ever Turkic khaganate. This is also mentioned in the Chinese sources as Tu-cüeh which is translated as Türük.

@@bilgekhagan408 Did not say anything about the "name" thing. I know my own history. Original gokturks has nothing to do with Anatolian turks except the name. gokturks were not new nation in mongolia. they were original and same people with xianyun, rong, xunyu, xiongnu, xiangbei, rouran even almost as same as mongols. Only difference come only when they migrate to west and mixed with scythian and kushan remnants of indo-iranian origin, the new culture was born under umbrella term of "Turk". The source can be found with turkic scholar Mahmud Kashgari's Diwan Lugat during 1000's.

@@tugsuufre hi brother sorry but you said “ the later Turkic identity comes after they migrated to the west and mixed with persians ” the definition of identity is name or specification of a group or peoples so clearly your saying they took the name turkic when they migrated to the west which is incorrect thats all i was trying to clarify other than that i do understand everything your saying brother thanks for replying its nice that you share what you know.

@@bilgekhagan408 I mean "turks" today is different from turks during 6th century. The Gokturks that time included mongols as well, but that does not make mongols and all other central asian nomads as turks like kazakh and turkish fanatics wish to claim. Turkic Identity before western migration is as same as all other groups originated from Mongolia, but later Turkic identity after western expansion is heavily persianized culturely, linguistically and genetically. I just saying that you cannot mix all of TURK into one pot. Turkification and Pan Turanist movement in central asia is more of somewhat orchestrated ideology by Czarist and Soviet Russia. I understand that new nations like Kazakhstan needs that identity more than anything else and try to claim everything they can steal from history.

Koreans believe Turks are brothers from old day. Grammar and some words are same. Both countries believe Tangury. Unfortunately Japanese destroyed Korean History during Japanese occupation pre WW2. Many Korean history is lost. Chinese also rewrote their history to justify their current territory. Land east of Yangtze river was belong to Gokurea, Korea. Manzulia was where Korea was found.

As for Koreans, the Han Chinese actually share a recent common ancestor with them dating back around 3000-4000 years ago. This is around the time of the Shang so their common ancestors were probably those eastern Siberians who lived around the Liao River. There has also been direct gene flow from the Han Chinese into the Korean population but not much Korean influence on the Han. Not too surprising since China held a dominant cultural position over Korea and Chinese families had settled in Korea over many centuries. Though the Chinese gene flow into Korea is nowhere near as great as what Vietnam experienced
@dearcoolz
@dearcoolz 2 жыл бұрын
Origin and Composition of Korean Ethnicity Analyzed by Ancient and Present-Day Genome The current genetic foundation of Koreans may have been established through a rapid admixture with ancient Southern Chinese populations associated with Iron Age Cambodians. We speculate that this admixing trend initially occurred mostly outside the Korean peninsula followed by continuous spread and localization in Korea, corresponding to the general admixture trend of East Asia. Over 70% of extant Korean genetic diversity is explained to be derived from such a recent population expansion and admixture from the South
@dearcoolz
@dearcoolz 2 жыл бұрын
Like most ethnic groups, Korean people are the composite of multiple populations and have an ethnogenesis that was a centuries long process. It’s not that Koreans were “steppe peoples” but they descend from an ancient population that was also partially ancestral to steppe peoples. The Korean people trace a lot of their “northern” ancestry back to the Chertovy Vorota Cave in modern-day Russia and their “southern” ancestry to the Iron Age Vat Komnou in modern-day Cambodia. These admixture events were occurring even before they settled in the Korean peninsula. Like please, the rice you eat was spread to you by your Southeast Asian ancestors, and all Northeast Asians ultimately derive from Southeast Asians because the southern half of Asia was populated first.

Great work, it's quiet amazing how much we actually know about the steppe people only by their interactions with others like China, Byzantine, Persia and Rome. Also you can see how different their culture is compared to some of the caricatural depiction we have of them. There is an aspect that always intrigued me though. Since those populations were able to invade and settle in almost all those regions around the steppes which cover such immense territories, and yet our usual vision of them are really low density population, how in hell were they able to settle in so many territories for so long, covering the entire Europe and Asia, and almost took over entire local populations? That is really a mystery i hope can be clarified one day or an other, something probably DNA analyses can answer more clearly.
