It’s the early morning of February 24th, 2022. At 4:30 am, two Russian tankers in the Sea of Azov, start moving directly to the city of Mariupol by the shortest path from Yeysk. This atypical behavior is seen on the radar screens in the Coastal Defense Headquarters at Mariupol Airport. There, the officers from multiple units responsible for the Ukrainian coastline come to the conclusion that the Russian Invasion of Ukraine has begun. The orders are given to start mining the waters near the Mariupol seaport. In a few hours, they are proven right as the city is attacked by naval artillery of Russian ships that apparently use tankers as decoys. Simultaneously, Russian cruise missiles, attack aviation, and land artillery start pounding the Ukrainian defenses in the east, giving the official start to the battles for Mariupol. Invaders also specifically target the Coastal Defense Headquarters but failed to inflict significant damage. Still, the operations of the center are halted as most of the servicemen are lost or left in dismay. David Kasatkin, callsign Khimik, lieutenant of the 2nd battalion of the Azov regiment, takes command and restores at least some order to start organizing further defensive measures for Mariupol.

If you are curious why this video was removed for some time right after the release, please take a look at the post in the community tab on the channel. I gave a detailed answer there. Long story short, we had some copyright music issues. For the same reason, the sound in the last few minutes of the video is absent. You can find it in the end of the following video kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6u9dWqZhNameNU. However, we have accurate subtitles for this bit, so it should not be a big issue. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you liked the video anyway.

I was a resident of Mariupol and after leaving the occupied territory, I've spent a huge amount of time investigating and learning about the events across the city from Feb 24 up until May 20. I can say that your video is probably the most accurate, clear and well-visualized work I've ever seen. Precise to the limit of how precise a single storyteller can be. It is not 100% prefect, there are some small mistakes and some interesting pieces of information missing, but generally, it's stunning. A few notes I want to make: 1) 11:32 You draw a red line on a road on the Western side of the city. This is not correct, the Russian assault had stopped roughly near the line between an airport and Staryi Krym, then there was a heavy fighting on that territory for many days and they only managed to come to the Kuprina street on ~March 10. 2) On 12:02 you mark Rozivka as captured. This is true, but I think it's worth mentioning that just before it was captured, a group of Ukrainian soldiers managed to get there, quickly grab as much ammunition from a depot there and drive back into the city. Small detail but seems interesting. 3) 17:30 Now to the main thing that got into my eyes. After russians broke through the defence line on Kuprina street, and you draw a captured area moving a few building blocks into the city and then stopping right in front of a big green area (this is a soviet cemetery). And then you don't draw any further russian movements in this area until mid April. This is not correct. In fact, they continued moving and reached Metalurhiv avenue on March 17. I'm 100% sure about that because I lived in that area. The suburbs to the North were also captured at that time. It seems to me that you were false impressed by the fightings on the Myru avenue and you thought that the main direction of assault was this avenue. Nope, the assault was moving to the North of the avenue, so the buildings block on one side of the avenue was held by russians, and the buildings on the other side of the avenue were held by Ukraine. The fighting for that avenue was continuing until early April and the battle line was moving in two directions: along the avenue, but also perpendicularly to it. But again, aside from these small imprefections, you've done a really great job at analysing and structuring the events.

Thank you for the insight. We really appreciate that you pointed out some mistakes, as we always try to be as precise as possible about events covered. Still, there usually are a lot of gaps in the information collected from open sources. Such witness accounts as yours are valuable in these cases. In addition, from our whole team, we want to say that we are really horrified and sorry for what was done to your city by the invaders. Hopefully, our video reflects that to the fullest extent.

@@floke9259 no you are wrong. I follow this war daily from russian and western sources. Ukraine is pushing in 3 directions as we speak. The zaporhizia axis which is the most mined teritory in the world at the moment and with dug in troops. Ukraine isnt failing there, the demining is just very time consuming. There is a mine every 0,5m, both AT and AP. The fact ukraine in in robotyne atm and is pushing into verbove on itself is very good information. They have found a way to demine vast teritories fast which isnt very easy if you dont have a lot of demining equipment. The Donbass axis, which is the least active front at the moment. Ukraine has pushed some kilometers there but nothing crucial and its very well prepared defensively since it was where ukraine fought in 2014. And finally the Bakhmut axis. Ukraine controlls 1 or 2 building (more like rubble) there in the south of the city. This axis has seen the most progress from ukrainians even tho they engage with the best russian units like VDV, ex Wagners, Spetsnaz etc. But the teritory around bakhmut isnt as well dug in since the russians still think they can push trough there. It is still heavily mined. Ukraine liberated a lot of land north and south of bakhmut and liberated 2 southern villages of Klishivka and Andrivka some days ago (i have video footage of this but sadly i cant send it. Ukraine still has a lot of forces in reserve while russia depleted all their reserves in the south and now needs to shift troops between fronts. At one point they wont be able to do this anymore and we will see a huge breaktrough. Not to mention f-16's are on their way which will help ukraine tremendously. Biggest threat to ukrainian armor are KA-52 choppers which can launch missiles 10 km behind the front line. Once ukraine has f-16's, this tactic will be useless

Outstanding video. I've been waiting for a video like this for so long. The vast majority of the major media coverage at the start of the war was about the defense of Kyiv and Kharkiv. It was only after the city was cut off that the media started talking about Mariupol, which sucked because I was always super curious about the events that took place prior to the city being surrounded. One note I will add. One of the main reasons why the 36th Marine Brigade surrendered was because a Russian airstrike hit the factory building where most of their ammo, food and water were stored, so they basically had nothing left to shoot with.

My dude, your dedication to putting these videos out for the public to see is incredible. The time invested in research, source gathering, the details to the minutia in the movement of units on the battlefield is truely amazing. As someone who has been heavily invested in watching this war since day one I remember seeing all these clips shown, but it was so fast moving that it was difficult to understand where and sometimes what exactly was going on. But you visualise it in such a simple way. Your work is critical, whilst I completely understand the toll this may be taking on you, please know it is so important. I don't think there is anyone else commiting the effort to collating sources and such into such digestible methods. If you haven't already the podcast Ukraine War Brief conducted an interview with an Azov Regiment survivor of the Siege and his story is awe inspiring, harrowing and absolutely mind blowing. His description of how he was able to get from his initial base that was at risk of being overrun, breakthrough the encirlement into the steel mill while being ambushed, left behind, assumed dead and with some incredibly grevious injuries is just...I don't know. Great video 💪 i just hope you will stop being one sided and look at everything from the ukrainian perspective. I am really not pro ukraninian or pro russian i just want a honest report of the situation at hand. It seems like you exaggerate every small accomplishment of the ukrainians but you do not even mention most of the russian progresses. You only mention russians in a negative way or present them as absolutely stupid, even though they had better tactics, weapons and other capabilities and absolutely obliterated the ukrainians in this particular battle. For example at the beginning they had around the same amount of troops as the Ukrainians but still managed to make some progress and we all know that it is far easier to defend than to attack enemy positions. usually you need many times more troops to achieve something if you attack but the russians managed to do it anyways. I would prefer if would report about the russian achievements with the same passion as you do about the Ukrainian ones, or leave the passion aside and remain absolutely pragmatic.

Azovstal had the safest bunkers in the city, designed to survive nuclear blasts. The civilians took their kids there to protect from indiscriminate shelling and rocket artillery fire. You're trying to undermine the defenders with stupid accusations. Why would Russias even care about "human shields" that didn't stop them once from killing thousands in strikes, so the claim is delusional to begin with
