Sunan al-Tirmidhi (Arabic) Chapter of Fitan, 2:45 (India) and 4:501 Tradition # 2225 (Egypt) Hadith #2149 (numbering of al-‘Alamiyyah) The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) said: "Islam will continue to be triumphant until there have been twelve Caliphs, all of them from Quraysh." -  Sahih Muslim (Arabic version) Kitab al-Imaara, 1980 Edition Pub. in Saudi Arabia, v3, p1453 Narrated Jabir ibn Samura: I heard the Prophet saying, "There will be twelve commanders (Amir)." He then said a sentence which I did not hear. My father said the Prophet added, "All of them will be from Quraysh." Sahih al-Bukhari (English) Hadith: 9.329, Kitabul Ahkam. Sahih al-Bukhari (Arabic) 4:165, Kitabul Ahkam. Hadith #6682 (numbering of al-ʿAlamiyyah) Now when it's evident that the source is authentic, the question arises on what the 12 Caliphs associate to?! The starting phrase "Islam will continue to be triumphant" is crystal clear to the fact that "the building of Islam stands until" "there have been twelve caliphs, all from Quraysh" Now, the question arises - Who is the Prophet talking about as there is no evident hint!? - So we reflect back in the history of Khalifas of every tribe that was in the Quraysh. Banu Ummayh, Banu Abbas, Banu Hashim, etc. Banu Abbas, Banu Ummayah, and others happened to have had a long chain of Khalifas in their Khilafat chain which surpasses the count of 12. Now, in the pool of tribes, only ONE tribe is left which happens to be ONLY of BANU HASHIM. When it's ONLY Banu Hashim then we start to count the individuals that may have been a Khalifa/Aamir/Commanders/ Imams. The count starts from 1 - Ali ibn Abi Talib A.S to the count 11 - Hassan Askari A.S. Just happens to be in the coincidental belief of the Shia school of thought that Banu Hashim count for Khalifas is at 11 momentarily, awaiting the 12th one, which ALSO gives great weightage that on his ARRIVAL, this world WILL end. And that we all call - Imam Al'Mahdi, the 12th one. This justifies that the Prophet had also told about the Mahdi (a) being from the progeny of his daughter (Janabe Syeda (s)). Hence, the basharat of 12 was foretold!

When we talk about the infallibility of the 12 Imams. For the infallibility, there are two important hadiths: Hadith Al-Thaqalayn (two weighty things - Qur'an and Ahleybayt (a)) and Hadith Al-Safina - Ahleybayt (a) as by the means of salvation like Noah's ark. Both of the sects Sunnis and Shias have a consensus on this hadith being mutawatir. Now putting the perspective of both Hadith Al-Saqlayn and Hadith Al-Safina into sight, what message do we drive out of it? 1. The necessity of obedience and adherence: in the hadith AlSafina, Ahley-bayt (a) are introduced as a means of salvation: to obey the means of salvation, it's necessary to attain salvation. Thus, it is essential to follow Ahley-bayt (a). 2. Infallibility of Ahley-bayt (a): if someone whose obedience is obligatory is fallible, there will be no guarantee that he does not make any mistakes in his guidance. While in the hadith, the salvation through Ahley-bayt (a) has been guaranteed. Therefore, Ahley-bayt (a) must be infallible. 3. The superiority of Ahley-bayt (a): if other people were superior to Ahley-bayt (a), they should have been mentioned in the hadith as the rescue ark.

I see a lot of animosity between both Sunnis and Shias in the comments sections of these debate/discussion videos. Yes we have differing opinions but let’s just be civil instead of slandering each other, and have proper, useful discussions? So if any Sunni (I am Shi’a) has any question or point they’d like to raise then please feel free to do so, and we can discuss the matter. I’m no expert but it’s better than hating each other. I would suggest whoever sees this comment to read the book - Succession to Muhammad - Wilfred Madelung. I read the third perspective solely because so that I can do justice without the bias and honestly, it's a Cambridge press released book. I love how this author discusses the lives of the Prophets and their relatives before Prophet Muhammad PBUH and then gets into the life of Prophet Muhammad PBUH and beautifully highlights the point.

Prophet himself choose his successors and guides for this ummah. IIf you read Quran from Adam(as) to last prophet Muhammad(Sawa) all the successors of prophets were chosen by Allah. So we ask you why allah choose successors of 123999 himself but when it comes to the last prophet he let it for people to choose the caliph?? If you go through history you will find that if prophet left for somewhere even for few hours he would choose someone as his representative then how can he left this religion without any leader and guide and let people to decide it?? Would he??

have to say that the shia guy gave referances from quran and hadees about what he belives khilafat and imamat is, and when he ask the sunni counterpart to give referances from quran and hadees about his belief on khilafat he says that "what quran or haddes"(29:28). the sunni guy says that though the shia belives the 3 different prospects but majority orthodox believe that without 12 imam shia believe you are kafir. but when the bladerunner points out that they too have 2 opinions regarding not believing in khilafat of abu bakr; one as kufr and other as not the sunni guy rejects it and says we dont believe people to be kafir on rejecting khilafat
