Maui police investigating bizarre carjacking of CA couple

Alex and Justina Lucero were on Maui for music gigs earlier in June and decided to use their free day to explore Paia and Hana but that day of fun turned into terror after they were carjacked and made to scramble up the side of a volcano to save their lives.

I've considered returning home to Hawaii and an old friend has settled in Puna on the Big Island. He's advised me to buy some land there and settle down there. I told him and I quote, "I have less than zero interest in moving to the Big Island" haha that's a place where you gotta be on watch all the time ... think South Africa with more ukulele music.

Just because it's on Maui, that doesn't mean people are "using and abusing only tourist" or "being ungrateful for help." If you're there, it doesn't matter if you're a local or a tourist. You'll be targeted because you ARE there. Dangerous crime has been happening on other islands as well. This couple just found out what we all have been dealing with collectively in Hawai'i. The carjacking at gunpoint and stolen rental car by local criminal Christopher Helmer are facts. The rest of their story about being hunted using a drone, is just BS due to paranoia. But understandable after the stressful and dangerous confrontation they've endured. Whatever drone they saw wasn't targeting them. There's no way 2 large white adults w/swimwear, could escape a real drone search in that deserted landscape. The other Hawaiians (taxi driver) had no idea that Helmer had robbed that couple. It makes no sense for Helmer to let them go on foot, and then later "organize" a hunt. Remember that Helmer's face was covered, so the victims couldn't identify him. HPD arrested Helmer while driving the stolen car. Many Hawaiians resent white people for stealing the Hawaiian kingdom by force in 1893. So a few locals have targeted whites. The most famous Maui brutal assault (2 Hawaiians beat up a white guy) happened in February 2014. Locals know that white people shouldn't venture into remote rural areas in the islands.
