Network engineer here, this is a great video but my biggest gripe here is that he's recommending a ton of NIC tweaks that are very much likely to cause more harm than good in a large percentage of mixed workloads. People also don't realize that many NIC tweaks are very hardware-specific, down to the exact model of NIC, nic driver, and windows version. One set of tweaks that may decrease latency slightly could lead to high retransmissions the user isn't able to notice without doing a packet capture, and these tweaks which could work well for a Intel NIC model X, could be hugely detrimental to Intel NIC model Y. There are very few settings, if any that could be argued to be 'universally beneficial’, even tweaking things such as DNS query frequency can break a lot of windows features and applications indirectly and in very specific one-off scenarios. With networking tweaks, any minor change which affects latency or throughput in scenario Y, is going to be at the cost of worse performance in scenario or workload X. These are all best left at defaults, and unless you're familiar with writing NIC drivers or networking application code you're more likely going to cause more harm than good in a lot of workloads. Outside of worse latency and bandwidth, they can cause all sort weird application issues and behavior that can be incredibly difficult to pinpoint down the road and in many cases will not even appear as a network related issue. For example, a specific part of an application either fails intermittently or is slower than expected-- just because you messed with some buffers that indirectly will affects TCP window sizing behavior or hardware scheduling (the rate at which packets are queued versus written to the hardware ASICs) on the NIC itself. Unless you're specifically running iperf and packet captures after tweaking ANY of these settings or using TCP optimizer, you have no idea what any of these settings are doing or how they're affecting NIC behavior. Most likely you will inadvertently cause the PC to perform suboptimally from a network standpoint, but it won't necessarily be readily apparent from a user standpoint. Also, users should not be setting their DNS to cloudflare or google or another universal DNS server, unless they are having issues resolving specific websites. 99% of the time it's going to be better and faster to set your DNS statically to that of your ISPs specific DNS IPs, as these will have significantly lower latency and should only be a few network hops away (versus a dozen+) and may only be a few ms depending on how far you are physically from your ISPs nearest PoP (point of presence). You can instead set your secondary DNS to google or cloudflare as this will only be queried in the event your primary does not resolve an IP address for a specific domain. This setting AFFECTS EVERY SINGLE QUERY your pc does out to the Internet whether thats for a website, and game server, or windows update server etc...and that DNS REPLY is going to be limited to the latency response of that DNS server. Your ISP's server is almost always going to be faster and lower latency than a public DNS server, and furthermore won't have to share the load with millions of other users-- just the local users sharing your local ISP at the telco level. This will also typically be better than setting DNS to your local router/modem gateway, as most ones from ISPs are slow devices not geared towards quick DNS queries. This is why many users will see an immediate improvement after setting DNS to a public DNS server such as google, since it's actually physically faster than the local DNS on your modem/router even though it's higher latency. HOWEVER, setting this statically your ISP's exact DNS server is going to be even faster because it is physically closer and will be an enterprise-grade device whose sole function is to resolve IP addresses as quickly as possible and nothing else. Otherwise this is a great tweak guide, but the average gamer or windows user should not be getting into the habit of thinking that they can better optimize network performance than the NIC driver engineers themselves. I can't tell you how many dozens of times I've helped users on reddit reporting specific issues with game x or app y, that we end up determining were the result of them tweaking their NIC settings after following an online guide, which we then resolved by reinstalling the the NIC drivers and windows registry settings to their defaults. This is doubly so for wireless, which is even more of a rat's tangle of settings which are insanely specific to even room layouts and interference -- you can't tweak any of these correctly without doing a full site survey or engaging the help of a wireless engineer, but typically 95% of the changes should be done at the AP and not the PC level. Just a disclaimer and I mean no ill will towards your videos, I just want to make sure your viewers are well-informed and understand the danger they're getting into when tweaking advanced NIC and TCP behavior settings.

@@starcore7507 Basically the entire NIC tweaks settings as well as using TCP optimizer, I'd skip past them completely. You stand to gain very little if any performance in very specific tests-- even if they do work it's going to be at the cost of general network stability, again back to the mixed workloads thing.

While I can comfortably navigate Windows and know my way around it and have checked out a bunch of PC optimization vids, things like network tweaks, registry tweaks, CMD stuff, or playing with services can be a bit overwhelming. It's hard to determine their exact impact or whether they're necessary. Personally, I don't do the network tweaks because I'm unsure of their effects. @lucasgenolini3767 never played apex, give it a try, worked for me, i mainly play destiny 2 atm. the only thing i didn't do is network tweaks because i have no problem with mine and anyways if you dont like the result for any reason, you always have the restore point to go back to

I had never before tried such an extensive optimization, but in my desperation, and after many... and I mean MANY fruitless attempts to fix in game micro stuttering (Fortnite) I decided I'd give this a try, and voila! This truly fixed a great deal of it. Finally! There is so much junk out there assuring to fix micro stuttering and never does. This truly did something for me and it deserves a comment & subscribe. Thank you!. The only downside I'm seeing so far is that before this optimization I used to get a fixed latency of 8.3 ms mostly (pretty stable) but now, I get even lower latency levels (7. something) but just a bit unstable at times (but this could be unrelated, IDK) anyways, THANK YOU!

Thanks a lot for making this! Earned a new sub 😁. I made some taskbar shortcuts to easily swap between power plans. I didn't want the processor state minimum at 100% while not gaming, so duplicated yours and made the non gaming plan 5%. Also, I found some extra programs to remove in Windows: Settings > Optional Feature if anyone is interested.

1:04 neat trick: Once you've selected the path in the file explorer, you can just type "cmd" in there. It will open a command prompt in that location. Alternatively obviously shift+right click and PowerShell.

Great guide! My system is way more responsive now, I also feel like the networking part helped a lot for gaming latency. A BIOS and AMD in depth guide would be great. My basic tips for that are enable: - XMP (AMD) - Resizable BAR - PBO
