Hello Gabe....good to see you and your Dad having some fun! You are correct in that a Parang is broad machete with a sheeps foot tipe tip whereas a Golok is primarily an Indonesian term for a large knife. The Parang is most prominent in and around Malaysia and Western side of Borneo and Brunei. There are many types or classes of Golok i.e. Golok sembilih which is used for slaughtering animals...usually goats or sheep in the Islamic context of some sort of celebration or ceremony. Then there is Golok tebas which is heavier and thicker and is made with chopping branches and or even bone in mind. There are many more different types and some are named specific to the region that specific shape and style orignates from!

Those Kukri blades from Nepal bite awfully ,they bluggin threir way throw wood instead of cutting, but the Bolo bit into the wood really well and they both have designs intended for combat also. 👍

When you were using the Bolo, it looked like you were hitting just before the belly of the blade. Off camera, did you try hitting right on the belly where the blade is wider and heavier, and more off-center of gravity?

I’m not sure I did! I am used to blades where the center of gravity is in the middle of the blade. I will have to try to modify my swing in future videos and see if it changes the results!

@@homeslicesharpening Yea, I think that's the genius of the kukri/falcata/khopesh design, the inward turning belly guides you to use it. The outwards facing belly of a machete tends to glace off the point of contact...

Yeah, these designs are absolutely brilliant. I am pretty new to the SE Asian and Latin designs, but very much liking the wrist snap, power, and efficiency so far!
