I have EV9 AWD GT-Line with 21 inch winter tires (285/45 R21). Last week it was -20 in Finland (capital area). Yesterday (07.01.24) it was -26. My average consumption (with 21 degrees inside and rear aircon on) was 32 kw/100 km (average speed of 89km/h). Climate was using 6 kw in the beginning and went down to 2,4 kWh in 30 minutes aprox. Today we have -3. I drove 50 km (mainly highway), speed of 95 km/h. My average consumption was 26,5 kw/h. And regeneration is still not working properly as battery is cold. This is very heavy car and you can get a lot from regen (when I slightly slowing down, it shows constant 50 kw of regen), but due to low battery temps, most is wasted. I consider 26,5 kW per 100 km being amazing result. Tomorrow is going to be +3, will se the result (first time positive temp from purchase date).

@nidospartan5393 sure thing! Today my consumption is 24 kW/100 km so far. Not bad (+2 in Helsinki/Espoo area). I will send later what charges I normally use.

@@nidospartan5393 so, as promised, here comes some info on my charging habits. First of all, battery preconditioning is a must-do. When it is -20 outside, it will take some 40 minutes to precondition the battery (actual for the EV9). Without it, the best I could get was a 50 kW charging speed. I use Helen 350 kW charges when I need some fast charging. As Helen's own app sucks so far, I use the KIA Charge app. It offers me 56.40 EUR per hour price, billed per minute. With the pre-conditioned battery, I was able to pull out 200 kW charging speed from 20% to 80% SOC. That is some 0.28-0.29 EUR per kW price. Often I use Plugit 90 kW charges located in Lippulaiva shopping mall, Espoo. It is priced at 0.33 EUR per minute. With that, I get a price of 0.22 EUR per kW. I have EV9 for a week now. Tried Helen's charger once with an ambient outside temperature of -20. My wife has driven the EV6 GT-Line since July 2023, and we also tried Plugit charges; we have some experience with them. Most of the charging sessions are done at home. I have a 3.7 kW charger, and I charge overnight now and then. Our current contract is based on a price of 0.10 EUR per kW (including delivery and taxes). We used Ionity charges with EV6 in autumn. Always use a 230 kW charging speed (through the KIA Charge App). For example, we pulled 34.204 kW in 11 minutes and paid 7.04 EUR. That is 0.206 EUR per kW price. As of today, we have 17 Ionity charging stations across Finland (with 6 charging points each), and one is under construction. You can drive from Helsinki to Sodankyla, charging each 150 km in Ionity stations at the maximum speeds the car allows. So, say it is -25 outside. EV9 consumption is ~32 kW / 100 km. You will use preconditioning for 40 minutes (that is approx 4 kW of power). With all side calculations, your consumption would be ~35 kW / 100 km. With EV9, you can pull 200 kW from the Ionity charger. The price is 38.40 EUR per hour (0.64 EUR per minute). That is equivalent to 0.19 cents per kW. 35 kW * 0.19 = 6.72 EUR per 100 km. The current E95 petrol price is ~1.65 EUR / litre. 6.72 / 1.65 = ~4 liters per 100 KM. That is for the 2.6 tons electric car in -25 winter conditions. AMAZING

In -20 degrees celsius 452.1km traveled in 5 hours 17 minutes including some chilling in the car while charging once got me 30.1kWh/100km consumption including also the battery heating done. I mainly did some 110km/h on the highways and that was roughly 80% of the driving between Helsinki-Pöyry-Helsinki. 8% to a 80% charge for in -20 degrees took me 28 minutes. This car is badass. With this math the range with a 3% loss calculated in gets to 309km. 120km/h in winter is crazy and at least here in Finland you get a solid ticket for that on the highways.

I love seeing tests in these sort of temperatures (having grown up in inland Sweden I see them as very normal to have during winter). I would blame the washer fluid and not the car. You get different concentration of washer fluid that freezes at different temperatures. Even though I now live in similar climate to Bergen, just across the water actually, I still mix my own so it doesn't freeze after a few degrees below freezing. A pet hate of mine is when I put the car in for service and the dealer tops up my washing fluid with one with barely any freeze protection... I'd love to see some driving with VAT in these conditions too. I've had the Mach-e do similar consumption while visiting my dad last winter=). And that's way more aerodynamic.

The consumption can be compared to Bjorn Nylands results with a MG4, which is a much smaller frontal area car! But it was also very cold during that run, even colder than this EV9 run I think. His end result for 1000 k was 332, but it was also up at 380wH/km at the most which is more than the EV9 here. Would be interesting to compare these two, and a graph over consumption vs temperature, with a split between cabin heat and drivetrain!

Thanks Kris, I'm going to be commuting Thursday morning at freeway speed in -30C. I'll have lots of battery, preheating and a L2 box on the other end. It's 150km, no public chargers yet, one under construction at destination. I think it will go better than it did with my diesel when it still had Tier 3 emissions :D. Going to be -40 this Saturday, but I'm not going anywhere.

Is it possible to somehow preheat the car with the app during charging? Wouldn't this increase the range as the car doesn't need to heat up when starting from a 100% charge?

Awsome test. What would have been a cool(d) test is to compare with and without use of heater. Just to see how much the heater affect this and how much is other conditions things.

Absolutely agree. Not that the heat is optional in any way, but I guess you could dress up or sit in a sleeping bag :) Im just very curious about the draw for heating. I have a hard time thinking that, I don't know, air resistance and stiffer tires result in that much lower mileage? I know for EV buses heat is a major, major powerdraw during cold weather.

@bond_andrew

Another thing that you should turn off - rear climate. EV9 has two separate aircons (front and rear). Completely two independent systems. In -20 rear one takes couple of kilowatts. I drove at -24 with just front aircon and set in "driver only" mode. Same nice 21 in the cabin, no windows frost and -3 kilowatts on consumption. Preconditioning always takes 5 to 5.5 kilowatts (as much as tried it). Also car always tells you (EV screen) what is the state of the battery (if it is cold, or hot, or normal). Still I find it great video for those who think of EV, what challenges to expect 😊. Thanks! Separate thanks for the Elton app! Very nice it takes car data directly from my Kia account and informs how much time I will spend charging.

Also has driver only mode if no passengers. Btw Elton is a nice app but the prices per kwh for chargers at least in Sweden are insane. They charge around 25-50% more than by using the specific apps of the different charger networks. Bummer since that ruins the whole motivation to use them.
@bond_andrew
@bond_andrew 5 ай бұрын
@O990l6mh just today I found another downside (more of a Kia issue). For some reason KIA Connect has a limitation on inquiries. Today I started to receive "maximum number of inquiries for today". That happend due to Elton app checks KIA servers at least once an hour for the car status. Again, not Elton's issue, but... as for the surcharge. Some charges (operators) are just 1 cent more expensive from Elton, some over 50% more expensive. So you absolutely right. That is what drives me crazy about EVs. I have now 7 different NFC tags and 9 mobile apps for charging. I try to find 350kw charges (billed per minute) and use KIAs fast charging ability. Plugit company offers 90kw charges for 0.33 per minute. That is about 0.22 cents per kilowatt. That is all in Finland 🇫🇮

Tesla Y got 21,6kWh/100km in this test with temperatures between 2 to 6c, so no - the Tesla Model Y does not get 20kWh/100km at -25c. And the Model Y is tiny compared to this large three row SUV. If you're gonna compare the Model Y to a Kia, it is the EV6 and not EV9. Even Model X is small compared to this EV9.

actual energy consumption is even higher! You are counting energy incorrectly! It is necessary to take into account not only the difference in the charge of the SOC at the beginning and at the end! You forgot to count the charging losses! You pay for all the energy, but only part goes to the battery! Charging losses average 15-20%!
@bond_andrew

Can't fully agree. When I charge at home, car takes 3.2 kW. My meter shows 3,31 kW. So 0.11 kilowatts per hour goes to waste. That is not 20%, but 3.4%. When you charge at DC charge it nearly 100% (bill compared to actual charge in percent). As this car has almost 100 kW battery pack, it is easy to calculate and see the results.
@point4894
@point4894 5 ай бұрын
@@bond_andrew Maybe incorrect numbers . Find out how much charge is in the battery. Let's say 20 kW. Add, for example, 40 kW. You should have 60 kW IN THE BATTERY. Then look at the counter. You will see numbers much higher than 40 kW + 3.4%. The number will be higher. There is another good way. Connect to the on-board computer. Tesla has a line: “charge total.” Divide the numbers from this line by the mileage of the car, you will see that your real energy consumption is much higher.
