Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he has a look at this 2009 Kia Sedona to try and diagnose the EVAP system. The check engine light is on with a code P0456 "Very Small EVAP Leak." We quickly discover that the tank is to full to diagnose with the smoke machine! However he does show you a very common issue with these and the most likely spot for them to leak. -Enjoy!

Not a big deal that the diagnoses was incomplete. What really helps is people now are aware of a potential problem and how they can be pro-active. Great one as usual.

Yes, I did. And, that sure looked like the original gas cap was still in place at the end of the video when he was Sil-Glyding the lip of the filler neck. So, what exactly was the point of your rather worthless comment?

I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who does this. I disconnect the purge and check for vacuum. Then go to the filler neck and check for rust and dirt. After cleaning the neck, they are always filthy, I put a little silicone on the o-ring for the fuel cap if it's not damaged, it's usually dry as a bone. Easy fix for less than 30 minutes

That dam rust, I am lucky I live in Australia tho I am close to the snow we don't have that problem much and no salt used on roads. I do have to say, watching your videos have helped me a lot here, (I am mechanically minded but old schooled) And here the local authorised dealer wants to charge $150 per hr and a min of 2hr just to look at a code and it was going to take 3 weeks before they would even look at it. I all ready known what the problem was and what code it was going to be but no that's what they wanted, I got a OBD2 controller and yep it was just the code I knew of and had fixed it already. Since the car was a proton no other person would touch it , it it only cost me $5 for the parts and $25 for the tool, I was also able to see there was another factory gauge fault that I had reported before but they claimed I was wrong, (now legal are dealing with the company) But watching your videos do help the small person, it has even allowed me helped some others with tracing there problems too. Thanks.

I am impressed with this mechanic's approach to the problem. First, he has the knowledge. Next he uses his knowledge to methodically diagnose the problem. And even after he sees the rusty filler neck, he doesn't assume he has found the problem. He discusses what he knows with the customer and lets them decide if they want to change the cap. A true professional. Great work.

You can make your own leak tester for under $30. All you need is a clean unused paint can and cover from Home Depot, some pneumatic fittings, some Kanthal wire, a wick, some 16 g wire, battery clamps, some 5/8 tubing, and some mineral oil. Plenty of videos on You Tube show you how to make one. It took me a couple of hours.

I had a 2006 Chevy Equinox that I bought with a blown head gasket to resale. It was missing the gas cap and had a history code for large evap leap. I tried to save a couple bucks and bought a supposed oem cap off ebay and it still had the same code and smoke test showed large smoke leak at cap with the new ebay "oem" cap. This is a southern car in the south with not a hint of rust or corrosion anywhere. Anyway, this ebay cap felt very weak and would release with the slightest counter clock spring pressure. I went to Oreilley and got a cap and had the same issue with how extremely easy it was to remove. Finally, I broke down and went to the dealer and paid 8 dollars more for a real oem gas cap. As soon as I twisted it on, it felt different and when I tried to remove it, it took substantial force to get it to release. I put the smoke machine on the system and closed the vent valve and no more leaks! I took out the caliper and measured the differences and it became apparent. There is the rubber seal and a plastic lip that this seal goes around on the cap and the plastic lip on the cheap, aftermarket caps was about .003in larger in diameter than the real oem cap which prevented the rubber seal from making solid contact and is why the y were so easy to remove.

Growing up in the Watertown/Fort Drum area, we had 3-4 vehicles that had this problem. If the car had a steel filler neck and a small evap leak, you just sanded the neck before inspection.

Hi Eric, i think you fixed it, but what i was gonna suggest is, I think if you use a snap on modis or verus etc, you can turn the valve on and off permanently not toggle, i'm not sure on that but think so, i have a feeling the valves both shut when you start up to do a pressure /vacuum test on the system, but i dont know how long that lasts for before it goes back to normal...Fred in UK.

Well i think at the end of the day, as we say over here, if the light went off after you cleaned the tank rim, it must be ok, i suppose you could always stick 12 volts across the vent solenoid, i think one terminal is live, so i suppose you could ground out the other side...but i'm sure its ok now.....

Awesome. was watching you shooting your M&P 9mm when the notification for this one popped up. I'm glad you did post this, even without proof. As a DIYer, I didn't know about the fuel level, but it makes perfect sense. Now I know, should I ever have an evap code that needs smoked, to wait till the fuel is at a low enough level for a proper test. Your failure to 100% find the problem taught me just as much as a confirmed fix. As always, love the channel and thanks for posting the video.

My first intro into OBD-II was an EVAP leak - probably why I hated it so much in the past! Picture trying to find a needle-in-a-haystack leak with no hose routing diagram, no understanding of how the system works, and no smoke machine, LOL - impossible! I ripped my hair out over my brother's girlfriend's Nissan sedan (forget the model now). Spent over an hour doing visuals and got nowhere! They should just include smoke machines with any modern vehicle sold in the Northeastern USA, or CA ... :D I've got my little paint-can smoke "machine" off eBay, so I can at least find the big leakers, plus bad vacuum leaks too. Stupid system. It's sole purpose is to suck money out of the public's wallets!

We do have to have emissions inspected on cars each year in Georgia. The inspection stations are linked directly to the state data base so, when you buy a license plate each year they know if the car has been inspected and passed or not. There are a whole range of hardened brass (bronze) tools available for those that work in explosive environments. Sparks are a especially bad thing when working around grain dust or plastics. Much more flammable and explosive than gasoline.

I am very aware of brass tools used in hazardous locations. Brass would be way too soft to make a file that would cut steel. And brass is very different than bronze. Bronze is not "hardened" brass. Two different alloys. Copper & zinc make brass. Copper & tin make bronze.

I worked in an auto salvage yard/pick a part and we had more than one car catch on fire and burn to the ground, as it were, and never blow up. Had a bus type camper with a propane tank on it that burned, didn't blow up. Not saying it can't but I never witnessed it happen. Easy enough fix yeah? Thanks for the video.

Are these smoke machines safe to use on an (empty) automotive A/C system to help find leaks? Yet, another cool video btw, thanks!

Maybe you can fill the system up with smoke, then hit it with nitrogen or argon ... or 134a (shhhh! Don't tell the EPA ... :D )? Not sure if that would work or not ... never tried it.
@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 7 жыл бұрын
you wouldn't want the smoke "oil" or the moisture from air pumped into the system. put in a small amount of gas and pressurize with nitrogen, that should be more than enough for a sniffer leak detector to go off.

Hey Eric, would you mind explaining to me why you couldn't siphon out some gas with a hose of some kind? Maybe a thin one for like airline tubing for an aquarium or something? Is that too risky a maneuver nowadays? Is there like some antitheft type rig on the filler necks and what not?

When it's pretty much a slam dunk that the filler neck rim is rusted and the gas cap needs to be replaced, why charge the person 1-2 hours shop time to do all this diagnostics when they could take a chance of just cleaning the rust and change the cap at a $20 gamble over a $200 bill? Worst case scenario it doesn't work and then they need the diagnosis... but then I guess the shop has more to lose not getting a bigger pay.

I asked this question on your Facebook site, so here goes again. I've read a few articles lately about not topping off the gas tank when refueling. They said just stop when the pump automatically clicks off otherwise there maybe a chance on damaging the EVAP canister or the EVAP system, your thoughts on this, thanks.

Excellent Video! You did right to just go for the cap, the proof is right there in the weak cap and rusty lip. Besides, it wasn't anywhere forward of the canister, so there really was very few other places that it could be. Even if it wasn't the cap & lip, it soon would have been, so that was not a waste of money or an unneeded repair.
