You just gave me courage to do this on my Kia Spectra. Easy to give him a thumbs-up. Great production - excellent camera work, lighting, sound, pretty clean engine helped too. Good editing.

Great video, just did my first timing belt using this and the FSM as references. I will say do not skip the spring in the tensioner. There is a hole in the tensioner pully for an 8mm allen key. Stick the key in the hole and rotate the tensioner to loosest point and lock it down. That is the only thing you didn't do in the video, you only went about halfway before giving up on the spring. Another 1/4 turn and you would have had enough free play to slip the belt on.

Hi! I have a Kia Carens 1.8L 2003 with the same engine and your video was amazingly useful. The zip tie trick was great. However, I was able to get the tensioner pulley properly wih the spring. You just have to rotate the tensioner pulley until the spring is in the hole. Once that happens, you can use the same key to rotate the tensioner pulley and apply the proper tension. Thanks for the video!

I second that. And wedging something under the crank gear. I've had a couple situations where I was fighting the cam gear, and the belt kept skipping a notch on the crank. That trick would have helped!

Excellent video! Just a clarification, the Kia 1.8L DOHC is NOT a zero-clearance engine, it is a freewheeling engine; no damage will result from a timing belt break. It is the only freewheeling engine that was made by Kia.

I read that the 1.6 SOHC is non-interference.

Nice vid and good edit techniques. I like the balancer and crankshaft sprocket design so you don't need to remove the cs bolt to do the job..

Very helpful Vido. Todays cars give you no room to work on the engine. I had a Geo metro 3 cylinder break its timing belt. Changed the belt right beside the road in twenty minutes. Wish the KIA was as easy but its a piece of U NO to work on

If there is enough slack on timing belt can it cause it to make a knocking noise that sound from intake valves?

Is there a chance that all 3 marks are aligned but the timing is still off? in my case i hear a constant clicking when i start the engine.

Do you have to remove all that just to align your timing gears? I know the tb has to come off but does the water pump and the rest have to come too?

i have a 2002 kia spectra just changed timing belt thanks to your video. nut now the car runs rough and dies when idling. any idea whats wrong. i did timing exactly like the video....thanks

make sure u didnt jump any teeth on the belt install. take the spark plugs out find number 1 cylinder put a long flat head screw driver in the hole carefully rotate engine till its lined up to tdc marks check for belt slack make sure every thing is lined up. the screw driver is to see the piston is at top dead center. make sure all your hoses and electric plugs are pluged up. when i did the valve cover gasket i forgot to plug the air box sensor and the truck had the same problems u have. it could be a disconnection.

I have a 2003 kia spectra 1.8 I messed up and know my timing is off . How can I set it back to the original timing settings. What do I need to do thx for any help

Assuming you have the engine up and covers all off, Bring it to TDC by removing the spark plugs, putting a long flat head screwdriver GENTLY onto piston 1 (make sure the engine is on the correct stroke first, IE the intake cam sprocket mark near I and the exhaust cam sprocket mark near E) and rotate the crank very slowly until the screw drive reaches the highest point in the stroke. Remove the timing belt, line the cams up with the respective marks, reinstall the timing belt.

It's the valve springs that make the tension, not compression.

Malcolm George yes the valve springs will apply some resistance, but the engine compression will increase the resistance a considerable amount. Removing the spark plugs will make the job easier.

ThePariss333 Removing the spark plugs allows for the air to leave on the compression stroke, when you are rotating the crank you will be putting one of the cylinders through the compression stroke. So without spark plugs you are only pushing against the friction of the engine. Factory used RTV on my transmission pan. Replacement gasket failed. Then I used the expensive rtv on it. Worked great.

ThePariss333 if you have marks then you should be able to easily realign with an accuracy greater then the width of the timing teeth.

I have same car with 1.8 L , I did timing belt and lined up all the marks after the engine idled for 2 or 3 min the timing belt slipped off and bent valves now. But now Iam puzzled why the timing belt slipped off ? Iam going to take head off and replace the valves, but I don't want repeat the same mistake. When I started the engine I did not have the timing belt covers on I wonder if that was the reason why timing belt slipped off,

The trick to install the timing belt when is reluctant and too tight is to slide it in a bit at the time on each side instead of fully cover the theet of the crank and cam with the belt.
