This is unironically one of my favourite movies of all time. It's satire in a way but Dave is still so sincere and the script is honestly incredible.
@j-5556 ай бұрын
100%. These kinds of movies cannot work without a touch of sincerity, and this one really nailed the wayward teenage existense at that moment in time (early '10s), like what Dave says at the beginning about not fitting in with any clique and just existed. It also nailed the way we lived back then as teenagers -- Skype, KZbin, MySpace, the way Dave and his friends talked, etc. The movie is overindulgent and off-color, like something I'd almost be embarrassed by if someone saw me watching it, but the tone, action and comedy was entertaining enough for me to watch it a good number of times. It's definitely a certain vibe that was interesting and amusing. It was *almost* profound. Almost... It just kind of fell short and there wasn't enough interest.
@Joviaero6 ай бұрын
@@j-555 I think what really hurt this film is the poor sequel. It was adapting the comic Kick-ass 2 which was even less sincere and even more cynical and edgy than the first. Add a less experienced director and a messy script and Kick-ass the film essentially killed any chance of a trilogy sadly.
@j-5556 ай бұрын
@@Joviaero Agreed. Kick Ass 2 ruined any chance of more movies. I actually enjoyed the KA2 comic for the shock value and just seeing where the story went from there. I liked the premise of his friends getting involved and looked forward to that because I liked Clark Duke in Kick Ass 1 and Hot Tub Time Machine. In the comic, the main highlight was the Col Stars 'n Stripes character and the portayal by Jim Carrey with the prosthetics was great, but the movie disposed of him almost sooner than the comic. It was just not as well-crafted as the first and completely lacked the good cinematography, wit and freshness. Felt cheap and made-for-tv. It was tricky too because the second comic took place right after but three years had passed since the first movie. That's a little while. If anything, they probably should've just gone with their own story because there was no way some of that material was going to end up in the movie version, like the children, grape, etc. They didn't even have the balls to show the aftermath of the Colonel's execution. It's like making a corno without the corn.

In talking about changes from the comic to the movie, there's one which I think was particularly egregious: the fact that in the comic, when Dave reveals that he's not gay, Katie doesn't forgive him and in fact has her boyfriend beat the absolute piss out of him instead. That to me is a much more realistic (and totally justifiable) reaction to finding out that a guy pretended to be gay so he could creep on you for weeks or months.
@motherplayer6 ай бұрын
Same. Even before I learned of that from the comic, I still found it odd to see in the film. I know it's all part of the power fantasy and stuff, but it still felt a little too self-serving. It only makes the sequel when he has one single conversation with Hit-Girl and she assumes they're going out and breaks up with him. It was just as stupid.

I think you guys nailed it pointing out that the movie was a little more upbeat than the comic, because that was definitely a miserable decision in the comic. Read all the way to the end of Kick-Ass 2, and by the time I got there, the “magic” of Kick-Ass had worn off for me. Didn’t see the movie. Didn’t read KA3 or Hit-Girl. I think a really nice touch is how the film opens on Dave ridiculing the guy who tried to fly, but at the end of the film, Dave does fly with the use of the jet pack. He has actually become a ‘superhero’

They just... Mentioned Skii Free? In 2024? In a Kick-Ass video? They truly are lunatics.

Nic Cage is great in this movie but he'd be even better if they kept his original backstory. He nails the unhinged sociopathic nerd vibe but has the physicality to sell the lie. Marky Marky, loathsome as he is, makes sense with the cliche cop backstory they used in the movie (and was meant to be a lie in the book) but Cage was perfect for the original backstory. While I generally like the movie and don't think a 1-1 adaptation would have been the right call (the comic can be really mean spirited in ways that aren't particularly interesting, much like Wanted), making Big Daddy actually a cop is less grim on paper but it kinda undermines the narrative and legitimises Hit-Girl in a way the narrative really shouldn't. Her dad being a manipulative man-child who's fucked her up and set her up for a life of violence to live out his power fantasy is fucking grim but that's the point. BD being a cop with a traumatic backstory makes him a legitimately tragic figure in a way that muddies the water too much. As you already covered, the movie just kinda loses its grounded sense of reality after HG and BD show up anyway so I guess it doesn't matter.

Very good edit, but I like to make suggestion. At the 1:11 ish mark where he says running with scissors and is called a maniac, you could have had shown the studio logo for running with scissors then shown footage from the video game postal 3. That’s what would have done. Thank God you didn’t, that would have been terrible.

That particular Atomic Comics logo was from a local Tempe, AZ comic shop back in the early 2000's.
