The plaintiff rented an apartment from the defendant, her landlord. She claims the defendant locked her out of her home one day and left all of her belongings outside, including her television and hair kit. She’s suing for damages. The defendant argues the plaintiff never paid rent and doesn’t know what happened to her belongings. She’s countersuing for unpaid rent, slander, and harassment.

At one point in my life, I went from making almost $80k a year with very cheap rent to being homeless and needing public assistance. I still had quite a bit of stuff (clothing, watches, TV's, shoes, nice car) from when I was making decent money. I am doing okay in life now, but I have come to realize that the problem with being poor is that everyone wants you to look poor as well. They want look into your grocery cart and see barely anything and what they do see needs to be one step up from dog food. They want your clothes looking dirty and un-ironed. Why? Because poor people should not take care of themselves and look bummy but a bum should never ask them for money because they look dirty and how dare they look the part.

You can tell the judge is that type of person that thinks she got all she got from only her hard work and that she’s proof that because she came from a blue collar immigrant home no one else should need assistance. I’m a white passing Latino too, so I know people like her, she’s ignoring how much luck, connections, privilege, means, childhood, religion, orientation and so much more factor into it. Hard work certainly helps the odds but you’ll easily find people that worked hard all their lives but didn’t go nearly as far as someone who did way less. This person could’ve worked hard all their lives and then she got cancer and lost a lot, and saw how much the system failed her, and is doing whatever she has to do to not lose everything. And her scoffing at her having a tv after a life of work and losing it all after cancer is nothing short of crass and a lack of class. It’s like saying, “how dare you have a tv/dress like me like I do when you need help from my money”.

30+ years ago when I became single after nearly 30 years of marriage, I came to the realization that I was just ONE bad decision away from becoming homeless. That realization changed my mind about homelessness. J.M. may be legally fair in her judgements but she is not always fair in her treatment of people. I don't believe that J.M is any more entitled to yell at the people before her than they are to yell at her. Or to ask a question and not let the people answer. She is very disrespectful of people and the behavior she displays makes me turn her off many times. The drama is a huge turn off for me. Sorry J.M.

Once again the judge is not exercising the other portion of her brain . My husband was a marine , I teach and am finishing a Doctorate . We both are underneath the poverty line , we both would most likely qualify for low income housing (we just choose not to use it ). Our veterans are the biggest receivers of government assistance; low income housing , food stamps , social security etc . Does this mean that they are not worthy of having a television or a dog ? None of which scream luxury they’re pretty basic things . She rents a room and because she’s poor, she’s expected to just sleep on the floor and look at the walls ? She’s not worthy of a television? It’s funny that the rich are also the biggest users of free handouts as they are the ones who don’t pay taxes . Ever heard of the working poor ? We get practically nothing but we are still contributors to taxes . So stop assuming that a person getting low income housing - equates no job . As much education as we have the the CRJ field , you would think this would be apparent . Shalom

I feel for the plaintiff but her math is not adding up, if there was a deposit of $375 she still owes money for rent but the prize goes to the dude who thinks he is the one to decide he is the to carry justice, taking someone’s property without their consent is a crime and plaintiff should have called the cops from the beginning. To the landlord looking up from the beginning was telling she was lying from the beginning.

People who get paid millions a year in a world where most people will never make that amount working all their lives see taxes as unfair and poverty a choice; they lack empathy and human decency. They're so out of touch that they think society owes them. They're the victims for paying taxes when someone like the plaintiff and billions of people work daily and still can't afford the basics like housing and food because those same millionaires won't pay them a living wage.

I've personally run into racism all my life because of the blood running through my veins from my forefathers on both my father's and my mother's side. Over six decades of having to still my heart and use my words intelligently, prudently and wisely; a person gets tired of it. T.I.R.E.D. of it. I'm just truly grateful my parents raised me right and to never be foolish, but to always do my best and to move forward with caution and dignity. Thank God for my education, which I paid for through hard work and sacrifice. Thank God for my profession which I worked hard at and and am now thankfully retired from and can now enjoy the fruits of my labor, even though as a public school teacher I earned peanuts; I know in my heart, in retrospect, that I "done good"; and so now, I can kick back a little bit, volunteering my time reading to kids at schools whenever I get the chance and my rickety bones don't hurt too much. 🥲 This is slightly off topic, but not really, because it's dealing with race, so I thought I'd chime in, being of Native American-Hispanic descent.

After several centuries of being racially targeted in this country, you would think our assertions, when it comes to this topic, would be received with empathy.
