She's not edgy, she's abusive. The insults about others and putting her husband down were signs she would continue to push the limits. Holding herself hostage with threats of self harm is a classic abuser move. You did well having them both out of your lives. Just be sure to not let them creep back in. Also, I think you could reassess your boundary of no self-harm talk; in the next relationship, whether friendship or romantic, think about boundaries where you don't allow any toxic or abusive behaviour.

Once a tenant/landlord relationship turns into something described in this video (an adult being condescending to another over work, job, lifestyle, etc) then it becomes REALLY toxic VERY quick. @@GoHerping I'm very glad they left, but that doesn't at all mean that they're not professional squatters... "Professional squatter" includes leaving more or less graciously when asked, to not tip somebody off that you do this professionally. Or being indifferent because the next spot is already/always lined up anyways. They are also indeed quite literally professional "random excuse generators." Worst case they just don't want an eviction record bc that makes it even harder to find the next target. They likely realized how much more publicized this issue would become if they didn't seal the deal properly, and bailed for their own sake so that they can scam someone else without developing an even bigger badder reputation. I'm glad you didn't go out of town much while they were still there. I'm only outlining this because it's really important after situations like this to not see it with rose colored glasses and risk walking straight into a nearly identical trap. People who are (technically) talented enough to scam somebody while living in their own home with them, absolutely can fool you in ways you never assumed possible, directly due to the nature of you having your guard down. "Surely their entire persona couldn't be a lie?" It’s OK that he has a thick skin and he can take it, or whatever it was he said, but that is not the point. He shouldn’t want to take it, even if he can. He should value himself and others like him, much more than that!!! The same goes for e.g. people belonging to different minority groups who are often discriminated upon (very much like racism, just a different kind of discrimination), he shouldn’t accept discrimination of them either if he sees it happening to someone, because it is just dead wrong! A huge part of me wants to show my roomies this video! My boyfriend and I are dealing with the same issue and rent is only getting more expensive in Texas, so it's putting us in a situation where we may be having to move further North in the coming year. Instability in someone's mental health can affect everyone around them, if they do not wish to help themselves then you cannot force it. But it's very kind-hearted of you to still want to help in such a "charity case" that this sounds like it was. They took advantage of the hand that feeds and it's a real shame because they really had it made. I'm not only speaking on your situation, but also partially ours too. I wish them all well, but it's hard to make someone want to work when things are being handed to them for free. I'm sure in her own way she was grateful, but by far you put up with more than any landlord or even friend would have. Laziness can only be solved through pure necessity and having no other choice. Also, my boyfriend also bought his tesla through youtube money and is interested in trying out flex or maybe even shipt for it to basically pay for itself. So thank you Alex for the videos you make, they really are helpful! I wish you well and the best of luck in finding new roomies that hopefully mesh well with your life path. ALSO, I appreciate this cleaning montage, was fun to watch while I spot cleaned our critters tanks. xD
