I think itrs just as likely these big name gamedev/artists types fell for it just like everyone else. Artists arent exactly known for being the most reasonable people lol. These guys mostly aren't multi-millionaires, they're microcelebrities who work for big corporations that pay them a wage more often than not. They arent the marketers or managers or accountants who handle business or make the games a success, they're creative people who make something neat. They're just as or more gullible than the rest of us lol

Hey I was a backer and there’s my name at 7:47 ; I live in the LA area and at the time thought this might be a good idea so I pledged at the $150 tier. As a “founder” you were supposed to get your name engraved on a plaque at the space, as well as a t-shirt and some game art posters. I did end up getting the t-shirt and posters. The posters were of good quality but maybe not exactly everyone’s style. I’m surprised DJ didn’t cover the “poster” rewards actually. I was a bummed the “LA/GS” never actually opened, but I did figure it was probably a little over ambitious to think even if it were to open that it would somehow be self-sustaining. As someone who (at the time) was hoping to break out as an indie game dev, I was hoping to give to something I believed in. Sad the way it turned out, though.

What I want to know is did they already own the building? Because I have looked into property costs in LA before and you can't hardly find a small (like 1/2 acre lot) for under $200k, and a small shop building in a decent area can easily be upwards of$400k. There was no way they only needed this little if they still needed to buy the building...

I don't get the utility or purpose of this. Are people really going to travel to develop a game they can make in their own space. How were they planning on keeping the lights on? What was the business model?
@gswanson
@gswanson 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it is possible to make games in your bedroom or office at home, there is something to be said about having a space where artists can get together and work. One of the big issues with like me for example, working out of my bedroom, it can be very distracting having both a bed and tons of videogames nearby. Having a place to go to where I can work and hang out with other artists really helps me with my creativity and concentration. Of course if you live in city other than LA it's not going to help you a lot, but I see the utility of places like this.
@cristiadu

@alexh2790 2 жыл бұрын
@@gswanson Yes, of course if you live handy then I can see some appeal, but obviously they would need continued revenue to keep the doors open. My skepticism stems from whether I think developers would welcome the increased overhead of using the space given that many indie games are made on a shoestring budget. I'm assuming that's how they were planning on keeping the light on.
@gswanson
@gswanson 2 жыл бұрын
@@alexh2790I don't know much about the business part of it, but some of these types of places I go to usually have like spaces you can rent, and they usually have a coffee shop that you can order from while you are there. There's a bunch of SCP books, masks, pins, ext that are supposedly being sold on kickstarter. If I recall rightly. You can't make stuff about scp and sell it. @AsterInDis
@AsterInDis 2 жыл бұрын
Ah, yeah, I remember seeing that. SCP is under creative commons attribution-ShareAlike licensing. You can use it commercially but you have to use the same licensing and attribute it back to the source. So I know $300,000 sounds like a ton of money and the knee-jerk reaction is that they ran away with a ton of it, I can say as someone who spent years estimating software development projects that the website they built alone could have easily eaten up half of their entire budget. The issue is that they didn't ask for anywhere near enough money to make something like this work. Looking at their designs for the space (which likely cost them a lot as well if they were hiring freelance or contractor designers), they probably would have needed more in the neighborhood of $5M to get this done and keep it afloat for just 6 months and they were never going to get that amount off Kickstarter. The $300,000 probably couldn't have paid all of the salaries for the team they would have needed to design and build the space as well as development the website other things for even a month. I don't know if they had bad intentions or not, but it seems like they just had absolutely 0 experience in estimating or running projects of this scale and they realized far too late that they didn't even have a tenth of the budget they needed to make this idea work.

@@XanthinZarda Oh yeah, there have definitely been other projects to make multi-millions on crowdfunding campaigns. But the difference is that they were all offering a product as far as I know. These "we are doing this thing that we can't provide to you but here is some merch as backer rewards" type campaigns have a pretty low ceiling. Local restaurants, cat cafes, local theaters, etc. If the creators of this campaign were not just horribly inexperienced, they likely knew that and set $300k as an achievable level assuming that private investors would make up the other 95% of the money but that side didn't come through or didn't come through enough. If this whole thing started in good faith, the best idea would have been to initially rent a small space to serve as the LA Game Space with plans to later expand it into the more impressive concept pitched. It's a real bad look when years go by and you don't have a actual space despite having the word Space in your name. Aside from New York, L.A is the most expensive US location to pay rent in. Aside from silicon valley. $300,000 would maybe have allowed them to pay rent for 3 months for a small amount of sq.ft. I don't know what they were thinking with that amount of money. Because aside from rent, in order to do anything with that space, they would need tens of thousands of dollars, if not $100,000 plus. $300k target for funding was absurdly low, and would never ever have been enough. Never. Who were they kidding?

i dont even get what the product even is. sounds like they made a kickstarter to fund them renovating a building to specialize as a game studio, and then rent out that building to game dev companies? why tf would anyone crowdfund a stranger to be a landlord?? or is it supposed to be like, a workshop where consumers pay a small fee to learn about game dev for a day? or was the idea that they're gonna hire their own game devs for their own studio to make games that arent even conceptualized yet? im so confused. what were the backers even paying for??

Ones like this are especially disappointing as it is actually a legitimate idea that could actually be created if the creators were competent. So many Kickscammers are a fantasy item that people should know better than to think a rando on Kickstarter could somehow create when large corporations have been unable to.

This is why I never back Kickstarters with grandiose, pie in the sky dreams. It is so obvious that these people never really sat down and did some serious number crunching and research to figure out the viability of the plan. I only back realistic, tangible goals such as getting a book printed, where all the content has already been finished and formatted and ready to go. Even some of those have fallen through.

Humans are such a jumble of weird contradictions. Some random dude will make a comment on KZbin ( about literally anything ) , and it is fake because no way anyone with a life exists outside of KZbin . However, someone says they will do something because you give them money & they are automatically legit.

You know I don't think I can blame the creator since they believed in this project, and they through it was a true thing because they're the ones that want people to spread their creativity because sometimes indi games can become something great. What was promised wasn't given (the LA Game Space) but the other stuff was given. I do believe they do regret of believing of what the two guys promised. Chances are the place wasn't built, the guys put some money into the website so they can continue to drag in money, and keep it between the two of them. I do understand why people would be upset at the creators that supported the idea and even spread the words to the point they made a game between one another to basically be handed out as an reward with no payment. But people shouldn't, because again they themselves thought it was a real promising thing to where they made the games without taking any money. To what I can see this is a lesson for them to be now caution about a gaming space for those to create games.

Hey, so there's a kickstarter a friend of mine is really interested in called Menyr, and although it does look amazing, I'm very skeptical of it. Have you or anyone else looked at this campaign and also have alarm bells ring? Or could I be just that much jaded? But the amount they're asking and the types of graphics they showcase (and the fact they said it'll be free once released) seems suspicious to me

They would have needed at least ten times that in order to get anywhere, but realistically even more. I don't really know if they set out to con people out of money, I think they just greatly underestimated the cost of the things they wanted.
