That’s exactly why, she respects authority figures and usually excels and gets praised. Then this big newspaper man tells her that she doesn’t have what it takes? That broke her, she took it to heart. But also was he wrong? In a year in the life she’s just floating around, expecting to be handed jobs without even trying. This isn’t even a criticism of Rory as a character, how could she be any different when during her life all she got was praise. It’s not uncommon for golden children to crash and burn because they can’t handle failures

There’s a real great analysis on this by KZbinr Neisa Teresa-it is a real good one about Rory Gilmore, and sheds light on the fact that Rory is just a person and that we just idealized her character. It really changed my hate for the character around to compassion and understanding.

The way Dean acted was close to abusive and controlling. Throughout a lot of seasons it’s like Rory kept apologizing to Dean for every little thing. Then in season 2 when he got mad about the basket thing and her doing the debutante ball. He was very controlling in the show but it’s like they try to portray him as this good guy.

Speaking to the Dean at the dance situation - refusing to fight was actually a great showing of confidence and maturity imo. I’ve been in Dean’s shoes, and A LOT of guys his age would’ve gotten in the fight, but he kept it on a leash. This show never really got better than season 1. “Rory’s Birthday Parties” to season 2’s “Bracebridge Dinner” is really an elite stretch. And it’s a shame Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop never got Emmy nominations for this series. If Ally McBeal and Sex and The City were awards faves at that time this show should have been as well. And a lot of this show has aged better than those shows. Lauren and Kelly would have won multiple awards if this show wasn’t on the WB.

I’m just watching Gilmore Girls for the first time ever. I’m on season 4 and I’m loving it. I love all the character development and storylines! Started watching in September, right when the leaves started falling and it was THE coziest evening I’ve had in a long time. AAAAAAHHHHH I LOVE THIS SHOW OH SO MY MUCH!! My life has never been the same. I was in 6th grade when it came on the WB and watched it live, commercials, “previously on” and “next week on GG.” I even had my own personal fan club at school. OBSESSED 😅 SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT FINISHED THE ENTIRE OG SERIES!!! The lala’s are a huge part of the show, I usually sing along or also make up my own very short phrases like when Dean or Christopher show up on screen “heeereee weee gooo aaaagggaaaainnnn…” or my favorite “shut the f*** uppppppppppp” 🎶 Rory and Lorelai both say the same exact line both times - “You sound happy” “I AM kid.” Definitely felt more legitimate with Luke especially after the “bit” also known as Luke slamming his head accidentally into the stove - the groan is my favorite part 😂 I like Sookie until she becomes business partners with Lorelai, she does some things I can’t back her up on. But she IS hilarious and I love that part about her up until the revival which.. I also didn’t like much. I am 5’8 which apparently makes me tall for a female as well so I can relate. I also wear a size 9 shoe sooouuuu.. the one who belongs at a circus is YOU Rune. I’ve ever liked Max (controlling/manipulative/bad tempered) or Dean (same). The fact that Dean is very emotionally abusive is never discussed and he’s always made out to be this perfect first boyfriend makes me ILL.

The feeling of cognitive dissonance where it feels like I’m watching a tv show about tragedy and generation abuse and tragic flaws, but also feeling the show thinks it’s 100% happy times, everyone is great and no one is ever abusive! Well, she does second guess herself about the decision to run away. And she should. It wasn’t the best decision. She wasn't being abused by her parents, just controlled. At 16, I guess that seemed unbearable for her. But she could have stuck it out in the mansion with free room and board at least long enough tho graduate high school and find a decent job. As an adult, she should be able to see that now.

I really love your videos and that in the last few years there’s been a Gilmore girl renaissance and people coming out saying they love it and also new people discovering it! It is not a perfect show by any means but I have not found a show that celebrates growing up as a girl, womanhood and familial relationships. Oh my god, now I understand why he didn't marry more. Before they got married, Max asked him what his role was. That's one of the reasons why he didn't get married. He was scared because of the trauma of giving up control.

Can I just say that I love the scene between Lorelai and Sookie (She's into superstistion, ....) dgmw i, too, hate what Lor said to her best friend - but she apologized immediately and owned up to it, and Sookie was in a mood for a few minutes, then back to good. And that, as opposed to what could be seen on most TV shows at the time, that is what makes them best friends. Not being 100% the same opinion the whole time. What Lor and Sookie have, and show in that scene, is an absolute example of friendship/relationship goals! A lot of TV "best friends" at the time (and still) were being portrayed in a way where they would say/do small, but stupid/offensive things to the other and then refuse to apologize, not speak to each other for a few episodes, be mean and revengeful....that is not best friend behaviour! It may make for a more interesting plot line, but that's about it.

I never watched the show in succession when it was coming out. My Nana would record random episodes on VHS for me. No continuous season. So for me, some episodes will always resonate with me. The first episode. The episode where Christopher shows up. Max and Lorelai's blossoming relationship and the proposal with a thousand yellow daisies. Donna Reed episode. Then later bought the dvds as they came out and caught up. It was just my Mom and me for the longest time growing up, and Nana always thought the series was like us, but healthier in many ways. Not so co-dependent, and my Mom did have a long-term boyfriend that lived with us when I was 8-10. So I was able to see what healthy boundaries and relationships look like. I liked to read, was/still am socially awkward. Even as Rory grew I still felt tied to her. I have made big stupid mistakes, like dropping out of school. But I didn't have the money or opportunity to go back. I honestly think the supporting characters are where it's at. Kirk, of course, Patty, Gypsy, Paris, Jackson, Suki, Michele, Rune, Lane and the band, Mrs. Kim, Liz and T.J. (their wedding is one of my top 5 episodes, I mean, c'mon!) etc. The side characters are allowed to have more personality. And many of them remind me of people in my own life. Babette and Murray are the coolest. My husband and I are basically them at this point. Old punks in a tiny house with no kids and cats instead. They were the best couple.
